This is such an interesting question! I've been recently changing my style. Combination of 2 things: a vintage home ec book that has personality style categories that are not the usual terms such as romantic, classic, etc.
It uses three sets of categories in opposition, for example demure vs vivacious. Idea is that if you're modest and retiring you don't wake up the next day the life of the party dancing on tables. The description of Sturdy really resonated with me.
And then someone here mentioned Emma Hill having a blog she read. I'd never heard of her but I really like how she wears so many plain pieces with little or no adornment. So I've recently bought a few more pairs of jeans that are not refined looking and enjoying the heck out of them. One is a light blue and I never wear light blue.
Now that fits with my style direction and the sweater I bought does in the sense that it's a plaid. I really like this. You can't see the colors well in the picture. It's a burgundy dimensional vertical stripe, heathered burgundy brown background and a pale grey horizontal striping. I love that the plaid is dimensional and I like the short fringe at the bottom. I've been wearing it with a pale grey sweater skirt that also has a short self fringe at the bottom. It's a thin sweater and drapes beautifully and could easily be pulled together to be a sweaterdress.
The third thing is a slightly rose gold necklace of a thin chain with 5 spaced leaves. They're slightly transparent and up close you can see the veining. These are definitely not sturdy looking but, hey, they're natural. I'll try and upload some product pix. The necklace, I only can find a picture of one leaf and a pair of earrings but you get the idea.
ETA well, actually, choosing something delicate and evanescent like a leaf and preferring it in metal is kind of a sturdy idea.
