What is the best compliment you've ever received?

Someone once told me that I always look sophisticated. To me, that was the best compliment I received because I often think that my style is too dowdy and frumpy.

The compliment I secretly most want to receive is that I look cool :).

I went to a soccer game in gear (didn't feel well and it was cold) and a friend came up to me and said,"I almost didn't recognize you--I've never seen you dress like this." Kind of a compliment by omission, but it made me feel like I must look pretty put together most of the time.

AT my SIL's wedding January 2010, I ended up wearing a short blue and black colorblock dress that was funky but appropriate for a beach wedding. My husband overheard his 17-year old niece tell her conservative mom she wanted to shop where I shopped because I looked so cool. Hubby said his sister looked annoyed. That was the best compliment ever.

Fashion? I generally get compliments on my shoes, and recently I've received a few compliments on my hair. The most meaningful compliments have been from strangers who have come up to me and said I looked good. One said he thought the color of my top enhanced my eye color, while the other just said I looked "awfully good."

Oh, this is easy! More than a year ago I was on the elevator at work, and a very fashionable co-worker told me I looked nice, then said "I can tell you really have FUN WITH FASHION!!!" YAY!!!

When I first started working at the university, I was attending the department Christmas party. I had dressed up, wore makeup, and had my contacts on instead of glasses. No one spoke to me until halfway through the evening, when a (tipsy) prof came up to me, grabbed my shoulders and said "KATE?! is that YOU?"

Turns out they weren't ignoring me, they were wondering who I was! I laughed about it then, but the first hour at that party was rather brutal.

Recently, I had put on a new shirt, and my 3 year old daughter said "MUMMY! (sigh) you look BEAU-TEE-FUL!".

I had a 30+ stranger rush up to me the other day while I was walking around a rather pricey men's shop looking for my husband's birthday gift. His exact words were "I need to know if this jacket looks good on me because, if it does, I'll buy it, otherwise I'll put it back, and you look like the kind of person who knows what looks good and what doesn't". This all came out in a rush and I must have looked a bit bewildered, because he followed up with the explanation "and my wife is also really picky." He then stood there expectantly.

So I took a careful, critical look and (by this time the sales associates had caught up with him), suggested some some minor alterations, and left with him thanking me profusely. I was thinking afterwards that I should have received a price reduction on my purchase in lieu of a sales commission. But, I have to admit, I did enjoy the compliment. At least, I think it was a compliment but, now that I reflect on it, he did call me "picky", didn't he?

When I had my last stroke that caused balance issues, I had to stop wearing heels. I LOVED my heels ( and shoes in general). Anyway, I was standing at the lunch counter talking to one of my co-workers and she mentioned the shoes I never wear anymore. I told her my girls had gone through them but most were the wrong size. She then told me 'we'll take them'. I cried as I bagged them up (3 grocery bags), but it was so much fun watching 15 ladies trying on my shoes and arguing over who was going to get which pair. The best part is, I get to vist my shoes every now and then. It was such a compliment to have them like my shoes so much.

I don't know if it really counts as a compliment, but I was working with a pediatrician and one little 6 month old could not stop touching the little stones on my sandals that day. When the appointment was over, she cried from shoe stone deprivation. xD

Worst compliment ever (OT, but I just have to share): I was at a restaurant in Santa Monica with my boyfriend, and our waiter told him he looked like a mix of Keanu Reeves and a young John Cusack. So I asked him who he thought I looked like, as I've NEVER had anyone say that I looked like any celebrity and I was curious. The answer? "I dunno, maybe some Bollywood actress?"
Moral of the story: If you're hitting on someone's boyfriend, at least pay his girlfriend a good compliment.

I wasn't even dressed! Let me explain...

I'd been working hard for a couple of years to lose weight, get in shape and so on. During this time, I also got my hair cut into more of a 'style' instead of just long straight hair, got new stylish specs, tossed old pj's and upgraded to nice modal pj's and robe etc. Got pedicures and so on. In short, I started taking better care of myself after a few years of feeling horrible about being significantly overweight. Did the diet, the exercise - but also started doing all kinds of other things to make myself feel better. Gone were the boring baggy jeans, the basic turtleneck and clunky 'walking' shoes. Ditched the plaid flannel pj bottoms and tee-shirt combo I used to wear for sleepwear. Got rid of the big fluffy fleece bathrobe. Stopped wearing running/athletic shoes anywhere but the actual gym. Banished the polar fleece 'bumming around' jackets I owned.

Anyway - there was a big family wedding going on, and I had houseguests. Mom was there too, and it had been awhile since we'd seen each other (we live far apart) and I was so surprised when she came into the kitchen as I was putting the coffee on one morning, and as I was fiddling with scooping coffee grounds into the top of the machine, she sort of opened up her arms in a kind of grand gesture, and said, "You look so glamourous..." and I could see her eyes looking a teensy bit teary. I was shocked because I had no makeup, hair was a little mussed (hadn't had my shower yet), and I'm just in my PJ's and bathrobe. The pj's were black modal with cotton lace trim on the edge of the pant bottoms. The top was a sleeveless style, simple-v-neck - and then the nicer quality robe. Oh, and probably the new pedicure, glasses, hairstyle too. I guess I hadn't noticed how much I had changed? Mom noticed, even though I wasn't even ready or dressed yet.

I will never forget how great that compliment made me feel. Me - in my pajamas, robe, glasses, no makeup. Glamourous!

Mine is a compliment from a YLF member at a meet up. She said I looked elegant. that is a word I would have never used to describe myself but it made me feel great. I have thought about that compliment often and it still makes me smile.

There is a lady who lives on my street with learning difficulties and very time I see her she will ask 'where did you buy your tights?' (sometimes I'm not even wearing tights) so I was completely thrilled when she turned and said 'I love your jacket'. Of course we are now back to tights.

the strangest compliment I ever received was at A&E (or ER), my daughter had impaired my vision by hitting me in the eye with a plastic jelly shoe (do not snigger Dana...stop it) and the Dr said 'Mrs (?) you really do have the most beautiful retinas', cue much squirming in my seat.

My favorite compliments by far are from fellow YLFers.

But in public, I most frequently hear that I have cool shoes. Then my ego says, gee, people always love my shoes, why don't they like my clothes. Then my ego answers that question by saying, they just don't get your clothes. Where I live, people aren't even wearing skinny jeans yet, and the most clothes-conscious women wear outfits that look sort of 2006 to me. (Ed Hardy graphic tees for example.) I have such a judgmental ego, ha.

Other than my little boy telling me, "mommy, you are so beautiful!" the best fashion compliment I ever received was probably recent from my best friend. I was lamenting my weight gain since we were in early twenties (and I was very thin) and my greying hair and all that stuff, and she says to me, "Actually, I think you look much better now! You are always so elegant and glamorous."

I almost died. No one has ever called me either of those things before.

Fashion compliments: 'you look very sophisticated in that white shirt' I also get compliments on my hair (whenever I do nothing to it), and accessories (I'm SO BAD with accessories but still get them right... or maybe my mom does? lol)

One of greatest compliments I remember was from one of my students (she was 11 at that point) and she asked me whether I was dating someone, and I told her I wasn't and so she said 'Oh, how come? But you are so beautiful!!'. Somehow it sounded so... sincere, it felt really nice

Oh, and this one was not for me, but when I was teaching a 4-5 year old group of kids, I had a female colleague that teached 3-4 year-olds, her name was Nina. I only had them two hours a week, so they didn't see that much of me, let alone Nina, of which they would get just a peek now and then (she was in another class). So, one day Nina comes to my class to ask for something, and suddenly this kid says 'You look very pretty!!!!' And then another one 'You look so pretty today!', and then two more kids. Nina had changed her hair from straight to curly for a couple of days, and my kids noticed the change before I did, which showed me how much attention to detail they pay!!

Fashion-wise, the one I got from that guy in the grocery store a while back was really nice -- the one where he complimented me on my cool boots, and said I looked sexy. (I was wearing a button-front shirt, a fitted waistcoat, skinny jeans and Fluevogs with buckles on them -- nothing revealing or sexy in an obvious way). Though I was never a raving beauty, I was once a sweet young thing, and chose to emphasize my smallness and cuteness through my fashion choices. But five or so years ago, I started to see that at some point that tactic is no longer going to fly. Though I know it seems shallow, the knowledge that my feminine charms will gradually fade is a little....I don't know. Sad, I guess. But I'm a lot more confident now, and more comfortable in my skin, and I've been trying to dress in a way that reflects the way I feel inside. So it was nice to hear, from a complete stranger, that the look I've been putting together lately is still attractive, even though it's a more "mature" look.

As far as non-fashion compliments, the one that stands out in my mind was the time my geology prof complimented me on my diplomacy and coolheadedness when handling an awkward situation with a confrontational student. Compliments on one's accomplishments are even more satisfying than ones about your style!

Well, I was proud to be asked to come back and do my graduate work in the ecology department... since my major was writing. Lol. I was also proud to be voted prettiest girl in first grade. Ahahahaha. Also, a street guy told me my outfit was beautiful weekend before last. It was the way he said it. Other people told me it was *fantastic,* but he was all *My god! Your outfit is beautiful!* Lol.

I'm still bummed about the outfit. It only got one outing. Horrible snag. I guess it was good I got it on sale at Marshall's, but it kills me!

Many years ago, when I was 28, I travelled with a co-worker who was about 32-35. During our meeting, something happened at her daughter's school ( she was a single mom ) and the two of us went to get her 6 year old together.

After meeting the little girl and chatting with her , she turned to her mom and said, " Mom, is she a teenager...because she is really cool ! " HYSTERICAL !!!
