Once I was riding the bus home from work. Random older dude exiting the the bus said I was pretty. He actually had ot say it twice. I didn't hear him the first time because I had my headphones in. I seriously look like a schlump-a-dump when commuting because I ride the bus to work then change into scrubs. I seriously don't care what I look like and dress purely for the elements.

I visited a friend, who was also plus-sized, in NYC many years ago. Another plus-sized woman on the subway came up to us and said something like, you girls are both "thick*" but you look good, where do you buy your clothes?

*Note that "thick" does not mean "stupid" in the USA, unlike the UK!

I don't know if it's the best compliment, but one time an organic farmer told me that I looked like a superhero. Loved that!

Long ago when I was in mid-twenties I was at a friend's wedding. There were two little girls at the wedding and apparently they did a small unofficial and private beauty judgement for all female guests The bride told me that they picked me as a winner and it was really unexpected and sweet.
Another one which I remember I got from the owner of the gift shop. I don't remember what he said to me exactly but it was something along the lines that I looked incredible. It was was before YLF and I was not dressed nicely or stylishly at all. I think I did not even wear a makeup that day. However the reason this compliment stays with me after 5 years is because it was 3 months after my big car accident where my face was cut by the broken glass and my lip was really disfigured. My scars were still very red and pronounced at that time and I felt quite sensitive about my looks. This compliment was unexpected and boosted my post-accident self esteem a lot!

Any compliments from the elementary school kids are the BEST. I was walking down the hall one day and a first grader who standing in line whispered to me in her best "Level 1" voice, "I love your shoes."

And there was the day I was trying to be unobtrusive in a fourth grade classroom when I overheard a student ask a friend, "Is she a model?" LOL. Too cute.

It's so easy to be stylish in the elementary school:)

My favorite compliments are about my hats - I have been stopped by a surprising mix of people who want to compliment my hat. Hats in Israel have a very particular association with a certain religious group - and I do not appear to be part of that group. I am always astounded and flattered how many people like my hats!

My favorite compliment was probably one of the most random I ever received several years ago. Well, I think it was directed at me. My mom and I were at the deli counter at the grocery store and an older gentleman (I'm guessing 70s) was standing next to us and started chatting, like a lot of southern people do. He looked at my mom and told her that she had a very pretty daughter. He also said that he should know a thing or 2 about beauty, since his wife had won several beauty contests in her younger days. At that time I was trying to go for a more retro look, so that really made my day.

You amazing women have blessed me with the most lovely compliments over the past 12 months... on public I often receive compliments on my hair, and have women approach me and ask where I have it done.

One compliment that I always recall was at work. A young (younger than me lol) delivery guy was in the office area dropping something off and he stopped and complimented me on my outfit and told me that black (yes suprise suprise I was wearing black:) ) look fantastic on me, and that not everyone could carry off black. I remember it possibly because it was a compliment from a totally unexpected source... and I got the sense if was a very genuine compliment.. nothing more.

I'm so loving this thread - I've read every single post so far. Positive memories FTW!

A girl once came into the bank while I covered the front desk for lunch and asked, "OMG, is your hair *real*??" This was when Brazilian blowouts had just started to become popular. For once I liked my super-straight, doesn't-do-nothin'-else hair.

As for clothes, I usually get complements on my boots, but one of my favorites was when my boss told me he'd never seen anyone put together so many outfits. "I mean, I've seen women with a lot of clothes before," he said, "but all of your outfits look GOOD." I was very pleased, especially since I only had 2 pairs of dress pants at the time.

Not too long ago I had a client at work who tends to go OTT with everything she wears say to me "I don't know how you do it, Miss Traci, but you can wear ANYTHING!" It's so untrue, but I took it as a huge compliment that I was pulling something off with an air of ease.

I always take it as the biggest compliment when someone says they want to copy a look I'm wearing. Highest form of flattery, right? It's like saying not only do they like how it looks on me, but they find the overall feel of the look appealing enough to want to have it for themselves. I'm always thrilled when someone wants to know where I got something so they can get it too.

I think the funniest one that I think of as a compliment is a person I used to work with would always ask me "Did you buy that together? Like, was it in the store as an outfit?" every single time I did any sort of layering of items. If it was a collared shirt under a sweater she'd even ask me if they were attached. It always cracked me up.

Oh, and you ylf'rs make me blush on a regular basis. It's so nice to be part of a community where everyone is so generous.

I have posted this before, but my favorite compliment occurred at my former job. We were union members, and the union issued oversized men's sporty shirts (in bright purple) that we were supposed to wear on Fridays. Ugh.

I yanked mine in with a belt, popped the collar, and paired it with a narrow black pencil skirt, black ruffled cardigan, black tights and heels. Someone who worked in the office said, "Only you could make a golf shirt look stylish."

April - I love the sound of your outfit!

I find it hard to pick the "best" but one recently I enjoyed (and have mentioned on YLF before) was from an older lady at church who said I looked more and more elegant all the time!

ETA Oh and just the other day, I was complimenting my daughter's teacher on her outfits and she said something like she counted a compliment like that as significant because I always look so nice

After marriage when I was in a new job... my previous team sent me a card... In which few of my friends wrote" We miss your fab sense of style and the way you dressed"...

I received a compliment yesterday afternoon, from a customer I waited on, about the top I was wearing. Interestingly enough, it's a top that has received several bad reviews at the Coldwater Creek website. I guess one woman's meat is another woman's poison. I've worn that top a lot this summer and just love it; glad someone else liked it enough to say something.

Well, my friend and I laugh about this, but once when we were out walking our dogs, someone thought I was her daughter! (She's 3 years older than me)
