What is my style descriptor? Stumped!

When Una mentioned Tomboy Luxe today I was wondering what it meant. Then one thing led to another and I am now wondering what is my style descriptor. I searched and I found this

What a great exercise you guys have done! I am late to the party, but I am intrigued nevertheless. I feel my style is all over the place! Though I tend to be minimalist, simple, clean, sometimes lady like, sometimes tom boyish ..... I still love the studs, chunky boots, sneaks and equally love sparkles. So have you been able to identify me as someone who has *so-and-so* style? I have little clue of what I am ..... my profile reads Modern Classic and Trendy Fashionista! Mainly because those are the only two terms I could understand! So, how do you perceive me and my style? Or is it too early to ask? Thanks for helping me along this style journey of mine!

Agree with E's suggestion of attaching some pics of your favorite outfits. It's always easier with visual aids.

Hmm... the words that come to mind are sporty(1/4/6)/edgy(2/3/7)/feminine(1/2/3/6), except #5, which looks straight up modern classic to me. What about these outfits makes them sing to you? Do some of them feel more comfortably you now, and are some more where you want to be in terms of style?

Sometimes these ideas take a good long time to develop. I was here almost a full year before I tried my first style descriptor - "Happy Tomboy". That lasted a month or so, before I decided that I was perhaps aspiring to one step more ladylike that that - so I switched to "Spunky Lady" (as in, Lady-like with spunk). That's currently where I'm sitting, but I don't think my style is living up to it - (My style is closer to Happy Tomboy, truthfully - maybe I should go back).

Anyway, that to say - it's fun to think about, but don't feel pressured over it - at some point, something will probably just pop into your head (or someone will say something that fits). And it's okay to start with something and change it as you realize it doesn't quite fit.

Emily - If I rate the happiness factor of all outfits then no 5 has to be the least. But not that I don't like it, just that it makes me less happy. Aaaannnd to think it is supposed to be modern classic and that is what I call myself o_O.

Amy - That is a very useful piece of advice. And I am going to remember that.

You look so good in every single one of these Neel. I'm no help, but I agree with Amy that it can take a while to figure out what you're going for. And it's perfectly fine to be a "mood dresser" with an eclectic closet full of clothes that allow you to pull of a variety of looks. A lot of fashionistas really enjoy that.

Hi Neel --

I think figuring out what term(s) resonate can involve a lot of free associating til you land at words that feel right to you in your head and gut. Where one starts is often pretty far from where one finishes!

I'm just throwing out terms that came quickly and seemed to apply across all these looks:

bold
high-impact
dramatic
playful
contrasting
vibrant
electric

It'll be fun to see where your explorations take you!

First of all, outfits #4 and #6 just totally blow me away - absolutely FABULOUS! And that cobalt blue color is just gorgeous on you.

As for style - I see elements of classic, modern and sporty. I completely agree with Vix's comments as well.

What Shannon said. And Claire and Amy, too. It took me two years before I finally came up with a style descriptor, and I didn't even come up with it myself -- Angie did! It was really hard for me to nail it down until that moment. And I can't really tell you why those two words (urban prince) have been so helpful. To tell the truth I think I had to be a certain ways along in the journey before they would have meant anything to me at all.

For some people, a style "rubric" seems more helpful -- a list of qualities they try to bring to each outfit (i.e. retro rugged sporty or elegant simple organic).

When I look at these fabulous outfits of yours I see sporty modern casual. There's energy in each of the outfits, a touch of trendiness and a bit of fun and/ or drama.

I see sporty but I also see touches of rocker edge with the studs. Definitely more polished though, which shows that studs are not exclusive to the RATE crowd. Bold and graphic for sure. Vix is always great with descriptors and I like her adjectives a lot for you.

Agree Una. I think Vix makes me think a bit differently about my own outfits! I am also leaning a lot towards tomboy nowadays and in a few months my hairstyle would also say that!

First off, I really love #2, 4, 5!

Second, I think tomboy luxe is pretty good. I *can* see the trendy fashionista, but it's mighty pared down. I think you're *this* shy of classic, close but not quite.

"Tomboy chic" came to mind, though number three put a bit of a spanner in the works with that - it is a lot more ladylike.

Sorry I couldn't come back sooner! And now you've got lots of good advice! Maybe one more word that comes to mind is graphic: you seem to like brighter color combos and higher contrasts. The colours actually remind me a bit of classic comic book illustrations; take that for what you will.

Trying to nail down a style descriptor is definitely a fun exercise. Another forum member (I believe it was HeleninCanada) bestowed my current descriptor, MCP, on me. As I look through your pics "sporty chic" comes to mind but it doesn't quite capture the edginess in some of your looks.

Thank you rachylou, lucy, E and Jewell! It's definitely been great fun thinking what my style actually looks like. I think I also now have a clearer idea of why certain outfits (Attached) weren't making me very happy though other fabbers liked them. I think these were least happy outfits and I would have been happier if I had thrown in a sneak or cut out boots (which I dont own yet!) with these!

Oh comparing the outfits you loved to the outfits you didn't let me see something else! It looks like you prefer cuts that are closer to the body: not body con tight but not voluminous either. And that your favourite pieces have structure. This is fun but challenging!

Classic Pop Superheroine. I see the graphic element that E mentioned. It's sorta comic book heroine and Andy Warhol Pop graphic a bit.... and a bit classic.

Those are some lovely outfits! I'm always especially in awe of people who can pull off mixing sneakers with dressier pieces.

I definitely see bold, sporty, and trendy. It also looks like you like to mix feminine/flirty pieces with elements that are more casual/funky/edgy. Does that sound right? I'm not sure how to put this directly into style-related words, but I also get the impression from your outfits that you're outgoing, adventurous, and lots of fun.

And, to my eye, it looks like the two outfits you didn't feel as happy in have a bit more of a romantic look than the ones you loved wearing.

Joy and zap - I had to Google what eclectic meant! :). But I think I do draw inspiration from lot of places and like to be a bit unpredictable with my dressing! So you guys might be right!

E - you are spot on about not body con and not too voluminous either observation! I wouldn't have guessed that about myself!

Aubergine - I do like mixing feminine with masculine pieces! And love the comfort such outfits bring along!
