...turns out to be one of your best colours?

I was trying on drapey cardigans today, one black and one blue-grey. I really liked the shape, but couldn't decide on colour. I like black, but I have a lot of black toppers already, and I know from experience that blue-grey doesn't get worn much because it doesn't actually suit me all that well -- I'm better off in a neutral or warmer grey . There was a third option, a light, utterly unremarkable beige, the one you would use as exhibit A when describing the "soul-sucking" colour that was once a hot topic and source of widespread derision on the forum.

But I tried it on anyway. It looked -- for lack of a better word -- classy. It didn't suck out my soul; it made my skin look healthy and my eyes look brighter. How can a colour be so nondescript on the rack and so appealing on the body? Everybody seems to hate it, it's bland and wishy-washy, but I'm pretty sure it works on me.

I bought the cardi. I'm going to give it a try, even though I don't think I've ever had any beige in my closet. It makes me feel very English. My late mum rocked the beige, and so do her sisters, so maybe I can too. (If I can just get the words nondescript and wishy-washy out of my head).
