I started out participating on this forum by trying to get a streamlined 'style' for my everyday life. While I had a huge collection of fancy, fitted, structured clothes I wore to go out, I ended up spending most of my time at home wearing athletic shorts or track pants with tshirts, which is what is ideally only like to wear for the 2 hours I workout in the evenings.

I tried many outfits and many silhouettes over the past few months. I even came up with several monthly challenges to encourage myself to wear more variety, so I could identify what works and what doesn't work.

I realized 2 things.

One - there have to be gradations of casual wear (something I learnt from Suz - thank you!) I like to also wear smart casuals on weekends now, but these *are not* clothes I want to wear at home. I often multi-task at home - working at my desk, laundry, walking my dog, sometimes ironing, cooking and often a quick afternoon nap to recharge - all happens in what I choose to wear that morning. My clothes often get stains from eating sloppily at my desk, cooking, maintaining my small balcony garden and paw prints (not to mention, my dog sheds hair like crazy!). I don't want to wear my smart casuals at home. I'm neither comfortable nor at ease if I fear I'll ruin the clothes.

Two - I like variety, but I don't want variety in silhouettes. Once I know a silhouette works for me, I like to wear it over and over. Also, this very preference is very seasonal for me. One season I could find skirts and tops to be favourites, next season it could be Capris and button downs. So the key is - buy a few options you can wear over and over that season and not feel like you 'have' to wear it again next season.

So, keeping this in mind, I've identified 4 uniforms that really work for my everyday life. They are comfortable, easy and offer me enough variety in silhouettes.

(1) Jogger pants or slim fit cotton knit pants that have an elasticated waist, worn with tshirt or woven cotton shirt. I resisted this ensemble ALOT. I don't like print on my bottom half. I like tailored pants. But I bought 2 pairs of these pants at different times out of sheer desperation (while traveling) and the comfort and ease they offer for my everyday life kind of grew on me. Now I have 5 pairs and they're in heavy rotation.

(2) Leggings and tunics. I often wear cropped leggings in summer. My tunics are also cotton - knit as well as woven.

(3) Shorts with tshirt. This is my most favourite outfit. I don't wear ordinary graphic tees with shorts but instead wear smart t-shirts with some print - striped tees, floral prints and also abstract artsy prints.

(4) T-shirt dresses. These are another favourite ensemble since they look polished and feminine, but feel like I'm wearing just a long tshirt. I have quite a few of these dresses now, made of knit cotton with 5% spandex in a wide variety of prints and colours.

So these are the 4 silhouettes I love to wear at home. I often don't wear any jewelry at home. I wear no makeup at all. I also don't bother with closed shoes and happily wear my crocs flip-flops all the time but also wear ballet flats at home.

I'm adding a few images that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. And while I enjoy wearing tube skirts, trousers and jeans in casual combinations, for me these fall into smart casual variety - the kinds I'd wear on weekends or to go shopping followed by coffee or if some friends were dropping in at our place for drinks and snacks or lunch.

For me, these outfits I wear at home are equivalent to Loungewear. I'm very happy that I've finally figured out my casual style! I see myself creating similar winter uniforms as well. Fleece lined yoga pants worn with smart sweaters, dark denim jeans worn with sweatshirts, corduroy pants worn with cardigans, and warm woolen leggings worn with full-sleeved tunics.

If you also work from home or are a SAHM, what do you like to wear everyday? What are your uniforms?
