I can do this too with many current trends, but with some that might be easy for others, I can't--like plaid shirts. Haven't had any for decades.
For me, this means that I resemble Suz's "vintage" remark and also hang on to what I like, even if I don't wear it for a long time. Well, and also I've bought a lot of items over the past 2 years because I had little to work with for years before that. And I was living in places where trends are less relevant and less appreciated. They also had different climates to where I am now. So my closet, though not vast, is more weighted toward newer items at this time, which it hadn't been since the 1980s (when vintage clothes first became a "thing" here).
It's kind of a seasonal hobby for me to see how I can meet current trends with SYC, and yes, with SO many options being considered current at once, we can aim at a subset of them even without a vast closet. Of course, krishnidoux is right that sometimes, older things really don't work as well as truly updated versions.
