I once went on a movie date with this guy I call 'the flatliner.' He asked what he should wear to the movies. I said jeans, he showed up in khakis. Enough said.

Anyways, Blade Runner 2049 is coming out and I'm going to go Monday, even though this means *like* two hours and forty minutes sitting in the dark (which is excruciating to me).

So... what should I wear to the movies? It's the Iconic Blade Runner, after all - NOT Star Wars, as my mum seems to think (she keeps asking if that 'little guy' - Luke Skywalker - is going to be in it...).

My new Nordies crops? Or should I wear my jammies...? lol! TWO HOURS PLUS!!

*My* theater where I go on $5 Tuesdays is FREEZING. I would wear one of your puffies. Or maybe two. Is Blade Runner post-apocalyptic? Add boots or booties. Messenger bag or backpack. Everything else will be covered by the puffie. You want to hear so that leaves out a hat.

Yes, dress warmly. Here's what I wore last weekend to a festival of short films. It wasn't in a regular movie theater, but at the local university, and lasted about 2 1/2 hours. I mainly dressed for dinner afterwards, and for the cold wind:

For a long movie, definitely something comfortable.

I still have the screen printed sweatpants that look like destroyed jeans that were all the rage a few years back. I call them my "Sweans." These are my go-to for movies! I wear with a machine washable top and cool shoes, and a scarf, one that's warm and I can wrap all over myself if it's cold.

Definately dress for comfort over style if you're going to be seated in what will be a crowded cinema for well over two hours, Rachylou.

I generally go with well broken in jeans and either a sweater or T-shirt ( depending what time of year ).

...and do enjoy the flick

What do you wear on a long plane ride? Wear that.
(Usually for me: comfy leggings/layers/sneakers or booties. Can be dressed up or down depending on the top and shoes.) My local (Mill Valley CA) theater is not climate controlled. So: you'll freeze or you'll fry...I usually make sure I have a public-appropriate tank as my first layer, just in case).

ps now we need to re-watch the original just to build up anticipation

I love going to the movies and have been twice in the last eight days (Victoria and Abdul and Battle of the Sexes). We have two movie theatres within 15 mins walk and they both serve espresso coffee, wine and delicious ice-creams. There are two multiplexes as well with the usual fare. The Lido has a plush lobby with comfortable chairs so we often go early for a drink and a chat...

I tend to wear jeans with boots or loafers or sneakers, and a knit with a leather jacket or similar...I hate being cold so make sure I am dressed warmly and sometimes bring a scarf. In summer I would probably dress in a similar way.....

It might have to be leggings and a sack dress. Two hours is sooo long...

The last movie I saw in a theater was a documentary about the East Bay punk scene so I tried to dress the part.

Yes, Greyscale, there is a need to pay a certain homage... Maybe I should roll my hair 40s style, like Rachael Rosen in the original... if it hasn't gotten too thin (!!)

I just wear the usual... Ponte pants, some kind of top and a jacket or jumper. Boots in winter and possibly sneakers in summer because like others I get cold in there. We have had a tradition of going as a family to lots... all the Harry Potter ones, all the LOTR ones, all the Hobbit ones, all the Star Wars ones. Then just Neil and I go to the latest James Bond ones etc, and the odd other thing. I never saw the original Blade Runner but just saw the shorts of the new one. Harrison Ford looks so ANCIENT

Oh yeah we go with our best mates to the Tom Cruise Mission Impossible and Jack Reacher movies... but I'm really mad that Tom Cruise was cast as Jack Reacher. I LOVE Jack Reacher and Tom Cruise is too *#^* short. I mean, I am short and that's OK, but please stay true to the character!

Lol, Jenni. Don't make me talk about Tom Cruise. He irks my nerves. He makes entertaining movies, but I refuse to pay for them.

Also don't make me talk about Harrison Ford. My brother and I were laughing about how Han Solo and Princess Leia would never grow up and become Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher! Lol! They would Never have a son that idolises Marilyn Manson!

My problem with movie theatres is they are freezing and the volume is too loud. It’s like going to a rock concert and sitting near the amp. I say wear loose jeans or sweat pants, a cozy loose fleece top, a puffy vest or jacket for warmth and bring ear muffs to block out sound! You will look like you’re ready for a snowstorm in CA instead of the movies!

I bring ear plugs to block out some of the sound. The soft spongy ones that you can get inexpensively at most pharmacies are good because they aren’t too annoying once you find a brand you like. They seem to block out just enough sound to allow you to hear the movie without being deaf afterwards!

Wow, I'm surprised that you are generally (all continents) feelin' that cold in the cinemas! I always have the reverse problem, how to dress not feeling hot, especially in the winter, when outside weather is freezing, you wear warm boots but have to carry your coat, hat and shawl in your lap all movie long:-((. I just don't get that kind of extreme heating, by us. So, I was to advice you on a light(weight) coat, layering upon a sleeveless anything, sheers instead of opaques, etc:-).

Two hours plus sitting?? Yikes, I would go crazy. I suggest comfortable pants that do not dig into the belly and comfortable shoes. But you have already received a lot of good advice. When I go to the movie I do not dress in a particular way, I just wear what I usually wear. But I have problems in Winter, for the same reason lyn67 mentions: warm puffer on my lap all the time - too hot! In a few occasions I ended up placing my bag on the floor and then placing my puffer on it, bundled up. Not that I like the idea of my bag on the floor of a movie theatre but .... when it is needed it is needed!

Staysfit - earplugs are a great idea! I am also "noise allergic".

I would wear very comfortable jeans, long sleeved T, fleece jacket and a down vest. I would bring a small fleece blanket with me. Now you may want to dress according to the movie era (or whatever). For that, I would wear faded black destroyed leggings, faded black destroyed tunic top and a Rick Owens type cardigan. I have not seen Bladerunner so I am guessing at the latter outfit.

I love going to the movie theater! We have several new theaters with reclining seats that are great. One theater has a brewery attached and you can order snacks and drinks by pushing a button. I'm usually hot because my 3-year old is terrified of movies (have you ever noticed how scary kids' movies are?) and watches them cuddled on my lap. I end up sweating by the end of the movie.

(ETA I usually wear jeans or a comfy skirt, with shoes I wouldn't normally walk too far in, to the movies. Might as well take the opportunity to wear my "sitting shoes" when I'm going to be doing a lot of sitting!).

Wear something warm, a shawl could be useful, too. I always feel cold in movie theaters. I also dislike the very loud volume, I will keep SF’s suggestion of wearing ear protection in mind.
Over two hrs at the movies is way too long, it better be a good movie!

Real movies are a rarity for me and techichally is date night, but I never seem to do real “ smart casual.” I need full- length pants for warmth, usually jeans. Don’t want any overly long to drag on that floor. In fall I sometimes wear a leather jacket to be more stylish but knits are more comfortable.

I wear jeans, a t-shirt (short or long sleeve depends on the time of year), and carry a heavy cardigan for the frigid temps once inside. Plus a cardigan feels like I'm wrapped in a cozy blanket. I also wear shoes with a sock (sneakers or boots) instead of bare feet so my toes don't get cold. Needless to say my movie attire is all about warmth.

I like the idea of destroyed top and leggings, but don't come to think actually have anything in the destroyed category... except a couple of tanks.

... I'm wondering if I should bring a pillow! That shoe movie I saw had new recliner sears installed - and they were all broken! We hopped around from row to row until we ended up back in the first set of broken seats we tried. It was pure comedy.

...my problem with wearing what I wear to fly is that I've never really dressed that comfortably for flying. Planes bring out the Edwardian in me...
