What color of tights with cognac booties?

I have a pair of very short cognac booties that I was hoping to wear with dresses or skirts and tights this fall/winter. Now that the cold weather is here I'm second guessing--CAN I wear this color of bootie with tights? All my tights are black or charcoal and very opaque. Do I need brown or burgundy tights? Or are these really only suited for wear with jeans or bare legs?

I know these are heels but I think the colours work really well.

I struggle with this sort of question myself, but I'm going to say that chocolate brown, black, and dark navy would all work.

Caro I love that second outfit you posted. So inspiring! Cognac booties, smoke tights, and light flower print in autumnal colours. All of it topped with a manly university-type tweed jacket and a very British hat. And she's riding a bicycle!

On the neutral side, I think black, dark brown, or charcoal all look great with cognac. For colors, I like greens, blues, and reds.

So there's no rule that boots/shoes have to be equally as dark as or darker than tights? I have this weird idea in my head that they do (but those examples all look great to me--I actually googled "tights cognac booties" before posting this thread and had seen and admired the outfits in example #1).

Great examples. I think all of these work and the key perhaps is repeating the color of the tights somewhere else in the outfit.
