What are you wearing for Thanksgiving?

Day Vies had me thinking about holiday outfits. I have realised I have plans for X-mas dinner but not Thanksgiving!! Since we're talking the same crowd (my family), I must have two distinct outfits. (Yes, they must be distinct; I think it's in the contract.) X-mas is dressier, Thanksgiving more casual.

I am totally stumped.

Also, I have realised I'm supposed to come up with some tasty appetizer and the clock is ticking down fast. Ack ack ack. I mean, what really goes before turkey and carrots? I don't think a can of nuts will fly, considering I have to have two holiday outfits.

Altho, my peeps so always have their knickers in a twist, you'd think a can of nuts would be the ticket. (Yes, snitty and salted peanuts go together. Remember, the children are raised on baked beans and hot dogs...)

p.s. No one say "pigs-in-a-blanket." Yes, that would be perfect. No, I do not have the energy for that. Ok. I lie. Truth: I can't find those horrible mini-dogs anymore...

Probably a sweater dress or thick jersey dress and leggings. See, my Thanksgiving is going to go like this:

-thanksgiving lunch at my in-laws' place. Turkey with all the fixins', and accompanying bloat. =P
-get on plane, fly 6 hours to CA (only remotely reasonable plane ticket was on Thursday afternoon). Dress+leggings is generally what I wear on planes anyway.
-possibly more thanksgiving dinner at my parents' house. In any case, definitely more eating.

I *may* go for my loose BF jeans instead. Depends on how I feel that day.

ETA: For appetizer, chips and onion soup dip? That's what we always have.

Ha! I have no idea what I'll wear and we are doing "Thanksgiving" with the inlaws on Sat. Probably some version of a sweater and jeans (maybe Angies festive ensamble?). I better get on it so clothes go in tomorrows laundry and will be clean...

Appetizer idea: cheese and fruit plate = goes well with all the "whine" ....

#1 is what I wore for [Canadian] Thanksgiving. It was warm that weekend and I cooked so I kept it simple and I didn't need shoes because it was at my house

Geez, we never have any appetizers, just the main meal- turkey, dressing, baked potatoes, gravy, DH's green bean casserole and pie for dessert. I like the ideas posted, just want to add they are very lucky to spend the holiday with you. You are SO damn cute, you'll look adorable no matter whatcha wear
It's probably just going to me and DH, so it doesn't really matter... my sister may come over, but given her history of suddenly becoming 'sick' I doubt she will. All of our parents have passed away, and we are not really close to other relatives, although we will have the *dreaded* Xmas day get-together at my racist, weight phobic in-laws, as usual

I'll probably wear a thick comfy tan sweater dress, fleece tights, and boots. Big scarf in case Pop's house is chilly, but he usually makes a fire. BF and I will be bringing our first all-vegan Thanksgiving dinner to eat while everyone else has the regular fixins, so I am debating appertizers as well. I'm thinking potato soup, crusty bread, and salad. But then I could eat potatoes all day long...

I'm planning to wear jeans and a cute washable top (I'm doing the cooking!). I have an olive colored embroidered henley I recently got at JJill.

For an appetizer I would do crudites with a dip. Nothing too rich. We don't to spoil our appetites for upcoming carb fest!

The only appetizers we do are celery sticks with cream cheese or peanut butter, and mixed nuts.

I'm envious of all of you discussing your holiday outfits. My family is the epitome of casual, so anything I wear for Thanksgiving or Christmas will feel too dressy. And somehow my life doesn't involve many winter holiday parties (probably because most of my friends are not from Christian backgrounds, so it's not as big a cultural thing). I've only ever worked at universities, so work holiday parties are extremely casual. I joke that I should make a craigslist ad as the ideal fake date to fancy office holiday parties.

I have to cook the meal, and all I've bought so far is the turkey. I haven't even thought about what I'm going to wear yet. My DH's family always dresses super casual, so no matter what I wear, I'll automatically look dressier than everyone else.
That's just the way it is.

Leggings, as well as a sweater dress, would be very practical and cute and new for the snitty peeps. But it's my *at home* uniform pretty much, so I don't know if I shouldn't do something else.

A shrimp ring would also be perfect, but that's my auntie's go to. I really like the idea of edamame, but I'm afraid of looking lazy even tho it's so perfect. Yes, yes. I know.

I may do it anyways.

LOL, and good question. I should be thinking about this. I have at least six events associated with these two holidays (Grandparents on each side, and a church event for each). The first is this coming Sunday (Thanksgiving at in-laws). I have no idea what to wear. I'd better get thinking!

We do veggie trays as appetizers...

I'll probably wear yoga pants - seriously. Our kitchen is being remodeled that week and the three of us (hubby, son, and me) always do Thanksgiving by ourselves. Can't cook with no stove or counter space, will probably go hiking and get some takeout on the way home. This year we have 2 puppies to be thankful for so it will be fun getting out with them.

I'll probably go with a veggie tray, too. It's just easier. Cake or pie will probably be store bought. Just not enough time in a day now that I work full time. I figure the turkey has to be stellar, and we'll need mashed potatoes plus another side or 2. The thing is I don't want to eat leftovers for a week. I only want to eat Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving. That's it.

I'm stumped on the outfit front, but what about spinach-artichoke dip served with pita chips? Crab dip? A fondue pot with cheese and savory tid-bits with it? We go all out of Thanksgiving and Christmas, despite us not having that many people. There is always WAAAYYY too much food, and everyone goes home toting another dinner so we aren't left with food to feed an army.

Oh, and they are labour intensive, but everyone adores potato skins (plus you have your potatoes to mash in the bargain!).

hummus? a can of chick peas, some lemon, some garlic (ok alot of garlic) and a spoon of tahini. Throw in chili (from a jar of course) for kick. Server with ripped apart pita breads (toasted).

the good old cheese ball: 1 box of phili, 1 package of chipped beef, a dash of worschestire (sp?) and a green onion or two. Chill and form into a ball by rolling in crushed cornflakes or nuts. Serve with ritz crackers (can substitute smoked salmon for the meat)

um, arthichoke dip, spinach dip, see I never left the 80's (oh, 7 layer dip)

I can go on.

I have hosted 2 thanksgivings here. no real officially holiday so I do them when they are convenient for my friends. I had two different sets of friends, thus 2 parties. I wore black jeans, a glittery tank, and a tux jacket to the first one (real comfy) and to the second I wore a floor length sexy silk dress with open back...(for the BF who loves that dress). Both worked quite well. I am not one to worry about spills or broken glasses.

Hmmm, all these parties are finally over, must explain why I finally have time for YLF again. -,)

kkards, that is brilliant! Pigs-in-a-blanket are soo totally yummy. But... well, like the other day, the dog sitter totally dissed me and my bf because we had a dinner date planned and it was... Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup.

Echo - can't do fondue. That is strictly X-mas season, which is then non-stop dairy overload. Crab dip sounds pretty good tho.

Jayne - Omg. How could I overlook the cheeseball? That might have to be the one. Work but not too much work. I wonder, tho, if I can get chipped beef...

A tux suit would be cool... I've got a pine green one for the season (yay!)... if only the pants didn't need taking up and it all probably being too dressed up. Hmm. Maybe I should go to the caroling party and wear the tux suit to that...

onion tart. unroll frozen puff pastry onto a baking sheet and fold up the edges to make sides and bake per instructions. caramelize a butt load of onions (about 3-4 large vidalias) in 4 tablespoons butter. when done, blop into base and bake at 350F until warmed through.

i am wearing something with an elastic waist. or a drapey cashmere dress and leggings and puffy socks for warmth.

My holiday attire won't be exciting considering I have to go to work from dinner (bah humbug! Does that apply to Black Friday/Thursday). We at least decided on jeans, black tops and comfy shoes for the whole weekend. Stores can pick their own team outfits for special days.

Appetizers - for easy, hit up a Trader Joes. White Bean Hummus and pita chips or even frozen apps that you just heat up. I like something like a block of cream cheese and you pour spicy cranberry or Major Grey;'s chutney over it and use to spread on crackers.

Okay - had to weigh in. A really easy appetizer is palmiers. Buy box of Pepperidge Farm puff pastry. Defrost. Unfold. Smear with honey cup mustard, apply layer of prosciutto, sprinkle on grated locatelli (can use parmesan too but I love locatelli). Orient short side toward you, roll long edges into the center forming a butterfly log, wrap in saran for a bit to firm up, take out slice and put on parchment, paint on some egg wash and bake. Can freeze and reheat.
Also a fab goat cheese appetizer - pretty glass quiche plate if you have. Drizzle bottom with extra virgin olive oil, crush some garlic and mix with oil, snip generous layer of fresh basil, and sun dried tomatoes in oil, get large log of goat cheese, I love chevre, slice and put in concentric circles, more sun dried tomatoes, basil, drizzle with olive oil. Do ahead so the flavors can meld. Serve with sliced french bread.

I am hosting. I need to be cool. I'm thinking of leggings, JC alexia booties, tunic, hip belt...with dishtowel draped artfully over shoulder and elbow length oven mitts, paper towel to blot sweaty forehead is optional;-)

I'm cooking, so my outfit must include flats and a lightweight top so I don't overheat. For appetizers, I stopped at Costco today and picked up smoked salmon (pre-sliced into bite-size pieces) and sliced italian meats and cheeses. I'll toss some pumpernickel rounds, capers, red onions, chopped hard boiled eggs and some creamy horseradish on a platter with the salmon and some crackers, olives and hot peppers on a chopping block with the meats and cheeses.

Oh, Trader Joe's is probably my best bet. The baker in me is dying to try the palmiers, tho, and the pumpernickel rounds... that I've got to do for St. Lucia's.

Hehe. DD will have to don the St. Lucia crown and bring saffron buns to everyone now that she's moved back home. I hear whining, but you know she wants to do it.

Ok. I see comfy is winning the day here for Thanksgiving. Heh. I really have to think. Is there such a thing as comfy but not casual? My people are not casual. Or is it that they're not comfy? Hmm.

No clue. I will be reading along for ideas. Apps ideas: Thin sliced bread with homemade pesto sauce. Or what about this? My family has this shrimp cocktail recipe. Boil the shrimp in salted water with milk and butter (this is a family trick and it is delicious, cook the shrimp in the boiled water mix, meaning equal parts milk and water, plus butter and remove, serve with saltines and your choice of sauce. We mix ketchup, hot sauce, mayo and pepper, we call it Salsa Rosada).
Here is the full recipe. Add some milk to the boiling water. You can also serve over patacones, which is a green plantain patty. I will link that one also.

You'll see my TG day outfit very, very soon. Casual but a little dressy. We will go to friends as I never host at home. Need to be in an American home for a real Thanksgiving.

I make and bring:

Spicy coconut creamed sweet potato
Stir fried French beans with garlic and ginger
South African Bread & Butter Pud

Cheese plate for snacks. Blue cheese with fig jam and sesame crackers.

I have a gorgeous green jewel-tone sweater that is tunic-length and zips in the back that I've been saving, and I'll probably pair it with black leather-ish leggings and either heels or moto boots. I plan on forcing my hubs and little man to take our Christmas card picture that day, so might as well wear something I like, right?!

As far as an appetizer idea, here's a recipe for Brie Cheese Bites that are simple but elegant. My family always has baked brie for the holidays (normally for Christmas, but whatever!) and we can't wait to make these! Baked brie is SO. FREAKING. GOOD. and these feel festive and fancy!

Kkards, my family always does the Hebrew National pigs in a blanket as appetizers. I love them too! In fact, I could happily eat a Thanksgiving meal consisting of nothing but those and pecan pie and not even notice that any of the stuff in the middle was gone.

Just started the Thanksgiving food shopping today! We spend it with another family, and it will be simple this year since only the two of us are going over. Probably the only appetizer will be wine! We went to Oakland Chinatown where we were able to buy unpackaged dried shimp and lop chung so were able to purchase only what we needed. We make a Chinese inspired turkey dressing with sweet rice, dried Chinese/Japanese mushrooms, lop chung, dried shrimp for the umame, and green onions. The yams and cranberry sauce will be purchased next week.

I will be wearing my beluga green pleather midi skirt as long as the waistband is still as loose as it was last week. I did a lot of stress eating to a coma this week. . . I figure the pleather is like a picnic table cloth, so no problemo if gravy or anything else spills on it. It is also washable. I'll probably wear my (only) blouse on top unless it's too warm for polyester. Haven't yet figured out Plan B outfit. Footwear isn't a big issue because we remove our footwear at the entryway.
