What are we watching lately?

Despite being slightly more social, and traveling a tiny bit for long weekends, we have kept up our more-than-is-healthy streaming viewing.

Currently totally absorbed in Money Heist. I thought it was only going to be 5 episodes (Parts 1,2,3,4,5) so it was like a huge birthday present to find out that there were 5 seasons! Steaming through Part 4 right now.

I tried 2 episodes of The Great, but am not totally absorbed, and am not sure I'll continue watching, though I appreciate it stylistically and it has very funny moments.

The latest season of Family Business has also not captivated me, though the first 2 seasons were really good. Speaking of French shows, I am thrilled that there will be another season of Call My Agent, even though they truly wrapped the series at the end of the last season.

looking forward to Get Back (waiting for all episodes to drop to take advantage of a free month of whatever streaming site it's on that we don't have - lol)

that's it - not much else is grabbing my attention at the moment . Watched Power of the Dog last night the other night (movie ).

I feel like I should be watching Yellowstone or Yellowwhatever it's called, but the first episode freaked me out with the horse killings and I couldn't watch it. Husband is really liking it.

Lots and lots of Turner Classic Movies - our escape-viewing of choice.

Anything interesting regarding nature or science that pops up on PBS, Discovery, Smithsonian, or Science channels.

DH watches the Dallas Cowboys, and we both have gotten into watching the quarterly sumo wrestling tournaments on NHK.

On a serious note, watched both Kyle Rittenhouse and Ahmaud Arbery trials.

Mare of Easttown was good! We are also part way into Season 2 of The Morning Show. Ted Lasso is also a bit hit in my house!

Loved The Great first season ( especially funny for a Russian gal ), looking forward for a second one. Could not get past episode 3 from Cowboy Bebop - prefer the original.
Started to watch Alias as I haven't seen it at all - good for watching while doing my exercise .

Hallmark holiday movies, and now lifetime has gotten into it as well.

Keep watching The Great. One of my favorite shows of the past two years. Once you get into the groove of what it’s doing, and the characters develop, it’s absorbing (at least for me).

I’m always a year or two behind on prestige tv because my husband won’t watch most of it (too dark or soapy). I am watching Succession as it airs, though. I’m finally finishing up The Undoing.

Just watched Get Back - 9 hrs of very rare footage of the Beatles recording in 1969. It was KILLER SUBLIME. The fashion too!

Then watched Eight Days a Week - KILLER AMAZING.

Squid Game - extremely macabre, but very clever and compelling.

Probably going to watch 1971 next.

Waiting for Succession to complete.....then we will binge watch season 2.

Succession, although I do agree with some critic's take that it's going around in circles a bit. They do amazing season finales so next week should be a treat.

We are watching Dopesick and my husband thinks it's great. I don't so much - important story not done that well.

Yellowstone and Yellowjackets are both on my list. But I typically don't like Westerns no matter the characters or themes.

Sort Of by CBC is great. Just people who happen to be of myriad identities living their lives, it very much reflects the world my kids are growing up in re: gender, sexuality, identity, as well as our actual physical world as it was filmed in downtown Toronto where we live.

I watched Squid Game because my Kpop loving kid learned about it on Tik Tok. Worth a watch if one is okay with the violence.

Mayor of Kingstown. Jeremy Renner and Kyle Chandler, yes please. I’ve seen the first two episodes and it is pretty gripping.

Star Trek Discovery - new season.

Squid Game was hard to watch sometimes but really well done.

Maid - fantastic performances and a very important topic.

Succession - the most unlikable collection of characters, but the snarky dialog is brilliant. I can’t help but watch.

Get Back — I am not even the biggest Beatles fan in the world, but I was captivated with it. Yes, all 8+ hours. I’ve spent enough time in band rehearsals/recording sessions to recognize and appreciate the dynamics.
My husband loved it too. I have a new level of respect for all the Beatles, especially Paul.

Ted Lasso — it’s the antidote to Succession. I cried at the last couple episodes.

The Morning Show - lost me a little bit in the last season but still worthwhile.

Sex Education - funny and sometimes ridiculous, but at the core a show with a lot of heart. Fantastic performances from the lead actor who plays a teen with a sex therapist mother, played brilliantly by Gillian Anderson.

We’re still going through mysteries and cop shows on Britbox. Now we’re watching Dalziel and Pascoe. Each episode is 1.5 hours. It’s really grown on me.

Janet, our watches are very similar - I guess I need to look into Mayor of Kingstown. Sex Education was also fun for the visuals - clothes, interiors and outdoor scenery. I personally was hoping for more balance between the middle aged and young characters but still a good show.

I have one hour to go on Get Back. What Angie and Janet said - it’s fantastic. Not fast but engrossing.

Succession is also underway - we are two episodes in to season 3. Started The Morning Show season but I am not loving it like season 1.

In 2021 we have also watched and liked - Ted Lasso, Mare of Eastown, the White lotus. War and Peace, Alias Grace. And the Icelandic thriller called Trapped.

I have also been rewatching two nostalgic favourites, Offspring and Seachange. Australian classics.

We really liked The Great, Mare of Eastown and Ted Lasso. Maid was also good, well acted. Loved Andie McDowell and her daughter was played by her real daughter.

Squid Game was really good, super violent but I found myself thinking about it during the day.

Couldn't get into Succession, such unlikeable characters. We also never finished Morning Show. I think we just forgot about it actually.

Has anyone watched You? We watched the first few episodes and I was really creeped out, not sure I'll watch any more although I kind of want to know where it goes.

Thanks for the thread - we needed a new series to watch!

Kkards - thanks for sharing about Hallmark movies - I watch them too.

Rachel Dratch and Ana Gasteyer did a spoof on Comedy Central: A Clusterfunke Christmas. And VH1 had a drag queen version with RuPaul - The B*tch Who Stole Christmas. Both very funny if rather heavy-handed with the spoofing.

Lisa P, I was also riffing on the fact so many shows have similar names/themes. There’s also Broadchurch which we didn’t continue with but had seemingly similar themes to Mare of Eastown (local mom/cop is paired with visiting officer to investigate crimes perpetrated on children very close to home…)

Awesome suggestions. I think I need to get Showtime and HBO in 2022 for a little while, i've missed all of the good things on those channels.

I totally forgot to mention Goliath - the first season was excellent, and it trailed off after, but Billy Bob Thornton is still great!

Could.not.Deal with Squid Game.

Narcos Mexico latest season was as good, but brutal, as ever. Watching Money Heist is such a relief after Narcos!

@ kkards - move over on the couch, I’m down for light fare and happily ever after ;-D Hallmark was filming a winter/holiday (fake snow EVERYWHERE) movie in front of my Mom’s apartment during my last visit, and now I have to watch them all in order to spot the scene(s)!

Sal, I really liked Trapped! Good show. Also loved Broadchurch and was sad to see it end. Olivia Colman was wonderful and she reminds me of my mom, so I’ll watch her in anything.

I think we may share similar taste Janet....I loved Broadchurch too - and Olivia Colman. Have you seen the film "The Favourite" - it's a period piece but definitely unconventional and interesting.

Robin, I heard Kieran Culkin interviewed on NPR. Terry Gross kept saying how funny Succession was. But others, like you, say how unlikeable the characters are. I thought we should give it a try, but now I don’t know.

We watched a few minutes of Squid Game. I just had to turn it off.

Succession is definitely not about liking the characters, or rooting for anyone. You have to be ok with all of them being terrible people. Similar to Seinfeld in some respects (someone took my idea about this and wrote a New Yorker article making the same comparison!).
