We watched about half of the first episode of the Beatles documentary Get Back last night. It’s fab just like the boys! In 1969 they were younger than my son is now. From what we’ve seen so far, I can see why they broke up: Paul was a control freak. He talked all the time. Other surprises: John said barely a word. As they are pulling bits and pieces of songs out of thin air, I realized that we knew the songs better than they did. If the rest is as good as the first 1.5 hours, I highly recommend.

I loved Get Back, and I’m not even the biggest Beatles fan. I felt differently though! I thought John seemed checked out (and likely stoned) for the first sessions. It wasn’t until they move back to the Saville studio and Billy Preston comes in before they start really working more as a team. But I saw Paul as the one with the most ambition and drive, trying to cultivate material for a new record under an insane deadline! I found new respect for Paul (George has always been my favorite Beatle up to now, but I think I now feel like each one had such distinct contributions I see them more equally).

How odd to see Yoko sitting right in the middle of the band as they work, but I like that it didn’t bother the rest of the guys. She and John just had that kind of relationship. I was very happy to see the old “Yoko broke up the Beatles” trope be debunked!

Janet, I’ve been reading that John and Yoko were on heroin, so that might explain his quietness. Paul must have had a stronger sense of urgency (big X on the calendar!!!) . So bossiness wasn’t a fair characterization, probably. My son thought their playing eight hours a night in Germany really helped them in their ability to jump in on a completely unknown song.

At different times, I’ve had different favorites. For several years, George has been my favorite too.

Currently watching The Wheel of Time on Prime, based on the fantasy novel series, so far it lacks the depth of early Game of Thrones but it's enjoyable and an escape from day to day life.

Reviewing this whole thread because we finally dropped HULU (for now, anyway) and signed up for HBO Max. So much viewing ahead! Which is good, cause we sure aren't going anywhere tonight or tomorrow or the next day or ....

I mentioned subtitles on English language programs, and I tried it for my Mom over the holiday with Last Tango in Halifax. Worked great, and my folks were completely charmed by the show. When I watched this previously, I'd wondered why the "the" was dropped by Alan and his family....in reading the script, turns out it's almost silent, Going to t'farm, t'hospital, t'road.

In 2022 I will get our TV-watching spot sofa cushions replaced - they've had more wear since March 2020 than they would have seen in 10 yrs normally.

Your comment about the sofa cushions made me laugh out loud, Laurie!

I have been watching the Sex And The City reboot, called And Just Like That. Lots of commentary/debate elsewhere on the internet. I would just say it’s imperfect but I am enjoying it for what is. From a fashion perspective, I always had mixed feelings about the original, and yet cannot deny I was influenced by Carrie’s hair and makeup if not her wardrobe (very different body type and footwear needs here!). In the reboot, they have decidedly not embraced the sneaker trend or given up their heels, there was even a little joke about them hobbling over uneven pavement. There’s also a ton of belting of dresses going on - so many belts! I overall feel like they are living in a fashion fantasy world (which is fair enough, it’s also a very wealthy and post-Covid world). I can’t relate what I’m seeing to what I understand of trends, but realize that’s probably due to my own ignorance/lack of exposure these days. Curious what others think of both the show and the fashion?

I did specifically love several Carrie items from the last episode - her podcasting-while-loopy hat, the multicolour striped get up, and the dress from the last scene.

I went back to watching Fluffy the comedian on You Tube again, cause I needed to cheer up yesterday. I also watched an interesting video by a traditional archer who was breaking down archery scenes in movies.

We watched all of the Beatles doc and then rewatched the last part again. I enjoyed it SO much. Paul’s songwriting ability is out of this world. However, when we dig deep to find the meaning of their songs, I can tell you right now: they don’t mean anything! I love them anyway.

We also rewatched People of Earth. We watched it several years ago. Apparently they were planning another season, but it was canceled. So the ending is unsatisfactory. But it’s the kind of show where every character is interesting and that’s good enough for me.

GET BACK WAS AWESOME!! All 8 hrs of it

Watching Season 2 of the Morning Show. It's better than Season 1 if you live in the US.

We started watching Patriot on Amazon last night. It's a crazy spy series that is more like Succession that it is like, say, Jack Ryan. Kind of cringey but kind of great. If you liked Succession you will probably like it!

I started watching a Jamie Dornan TV series on BBC iPlayer called The Tourist last night and the first episode was really gripping. It's about a man in the Australian Outback who is involved in a car accident and has no memory at all of who he is.

Can't focus on anything but Succession right now...mid S2! Nice to see Holly Hunter in a well-cast role- I've always been a fan of hers. Succession reminds me a lot of Damages.

Patriot was excellent, and agree it was unusual. Not sure if I'd compare it to Succession, but I'm trying to think of something else to compare it to, and can't. Saw it a few yrs ago, might rewatch.

I liked Morning Show S2 as much as the first season. (As the pandemic begins to be addressed I just wanted to shout "It gets so much worse!")

Continue to find less well known/not yet picked up by major streaming apps Israeli shows on an app called Izzy

Haven't watched the Sex and the City reboot, and was never a big fan of the original but have seen many episodes over the years. There was an interesting, not-favorable review/commentary in either NYT or WaPo last week about the aspect of the characters seeming to be continuously shocked that they are middle-aged, and how they are constantly making negative age-related comments. Ugh. I'll probably give it a try now that we have HBO again, but not top of my list.

Patriot is great — quite a unique show, IMO. The combination of dark humor and thriller remind me a bit of the movie In Bruges, which I also love.

Dr. Who - catching up on the last 3 seasons.
The Witcher
Locke and Key
Friends - just to reminisce and laugh a little.

Get Back is on my since I was a huge Beatles fan.

I've been watching Brand New Cherry Flavor on Netflix. Weird and disturbing but oddly I'm compelled to keep watching. It's really effed-up, just a fair warning. But I love Catherine Keener and would watch anything with her.

Jules, I am also enjoying the Sex and the City reboot, though I agree it is imperfect in so many ways. But I'm all in, and would watch it no matter how good or bad, really! Yes, surprised they are all still dressing the same as before...heels, dresses...that seems like kind of a missed opportunity that these women would not be more current with denim and or trousers and flat boots or shoes. And for story purposes, I notice they are making them quite uncool and "old"...so they get to embrace the new I suppose. It's as if no "evolution" of them has gone on at all, a bit of a time warp, perhaps.

Laurie, I loved Last Tango n Halifax!

The last few nights has been catching up on the previous seasons and then watching the latest of After Life (on Netflix). It is such a moving and yet often cringy show, very Ricky Gervais, very funny. Really enjoyed it.

We’re watching In the Thick of It on BritBox. It’s a little like Veep, but British. Mix ineptitude with damage control, and hilarity ensues.

We watched an episode or two of Succession. A little of that goes a long way.

Judy, glad I’m not the only one watching AJLT and my fashion feelings aren’t totally off base! I guess they never wore particularly ‘relatable’ fashion though. I will always adore SJP’s hair.

Finished Yellowjackets last night. Absolutely loved it, both the flashbacks to the fierce 90s girls and the present day performances by fierce 90s actors. It definitely has horror elements and there were scenes I couldn’t watch (and I’m not easily put off), so not for everyone.

Watching Inventing Anna. Fashion has a role!

I also started Inventing Anna, seems fun so far - it's the Anna Delvey/Sorokin con artist story, but fictionalized to some extent in this Shonda Rhimes version.

Until the Olympics started, we were watching The Man in the High Castle. It’s chilling.

I’m watching Starz’s Counterpart on Prime. It’s good… like if Man in the High Castle and The Americans had a baby

Rachy, we loved Counterpart! And it eerily predicts the pandemic, too!!

I can’t get over the fact of face masks in the show, Mary! Pure prescience.

Has anyone seen Afterparty? I think It’s on AppleTV. It’s a murder mystery, but very funny. Tiffany Haddish plays the detective.
