I had a mini epiphany - don't fight your elements. If it's humid, and I'm on a bike, and I'll get dirty chaining it up to a tree and grit in my shoes, so be it. Birkenstocks and Roxy board shorts with a Kmart tee I bought for lounge purposes is OKAY. Ditto the Hanes bandini underneath instead of proper bra that will just have to be washed all that much more if worn in heat. It was all black and white, it went together, no one looked askance at me. It's all good.
Of course, this goes without saying that I have upgraded gear and lounge capsules so that any of that is at a level that I am comfortable being seen out of the house in

My personal feeling is that gear is great for errands, so long as it isn't skin-tight spandex. There are a lot of fit ladies in Austin rocking close-to-the-body Lulu, and seriously, all they need is a top layer to be OK by me. Without it, I do kinda feel like they're not really dressed for dinner.

yeah, at some point practicality just wins out. Granted these are swim shorts, not bike shorts, but gear nonetheless lol. If I look out my window there are dozens of swimsuit and shorts clad people in the park by the spring. ALL gear and super casual as far as the eye can see.

This looks like a fun casual outfit with the pattern mixing. Sometimes you just need gear for a task. Now, pj bottoms (which I saw at the supermarket recently) is just never ok out in public to me. But that's just my opinion.

You look great and comfortable. I'm totally good with gear worn everywhere, especially doing stuff outside. Also I think 'lounge wear' is in the eye of the beholder, it's not a concept I came across until reading this site. I guess for me the thing is - peer group / community pressures and work expectations to conform aside, fashion should always be a choice to partake in or not, and a fun one.

I have an issue with really short tennis dresses in the grocery store, but beyond that, I'm fine with gear out in public. And, Mo, this doesn't meet my def. of gear. You look fab as usual.

I love those shorts! They don't look gear-ish nor does the entire outfit.

I kind of did the same thing yesterday. It was a WFH day and I opted to wear (gasp) workout clothes. Normally I try to put on real clothes but I was just too tired after traveling on Thursday. So I totally feel the way you do. Sometimes it's better to forego the pressure and just be fine with it.

Looks A-OK to me! A skort might make sense for your biking excursions. We had several inches of snow on Wednesday - I have to admit to being lazy enough not to change from my driveway snowblowing getup to go to the grocery store. But, this particular store is right around the corner from our house and I am *never* too casual amongst the fellow shoppers there.

Thanks ladies. I admit gear out in the world has never been a big faux pas to me. As long as the appropriate bits are covered and it isn't ratty.
Denise, that's nice to say - but I assure you there is plenty I can't wear well! Remember the red ombre dress attempt when I first moved back here last fall? Yikes. Great dress. Terrible fit on me. But I do appreciate that in general I wear off the rack sizes with little or no need for alterations.

Your gear is really flattering on you. Sometimes it makes sense to wear what's easy and comfortable. I'm going to have to figure out what to wear for gardening this summer. I need something that can get dirty but that I don't mind being seen in, as we live on a busy corner.

When I think gear, I think lycra tights. It's a very common look in my area - the yummy-mummies doing errands before or after gym. I'm not a fan.

Your outfit looks great, and had you not said it was gear I would have thought it was just another fab casual outfit. Which I guess illustrates whilst we may define the clothes we choose by their function, most have a little more versatility and can probably straddle several categories. Except lycra tights.

I really like the tee, actually. I'm returning a tie dye sweatshirt I ordered from the Gap because it isn't as cool as it seemed, but I would totally wear that.

I think context and your neighborhood are important, too. Nicely fitting and weather-appropriate sporty clothes (aka gear) are fine. We could overdo the BF and Gucci loafer thing to the grocery if it means they can only be worn in air-conditioned driving. It really would be a health goal to walk or bike as part of other real activities and not thinking that they will always be separate ! Also I think it's more about giving some thought to overall fun style and neatness, and wearing things rather than saving up a closet full of perfectly wearable clothes while living in sweatpants, and not whether, gasp, one sometimes goes to the grocery in yoga pants and sporty shoes.
