My friend let her teenage son name her dog and he picked a rapper who was murdered twenty years ago. It's funny because older people don't have any idea where the name came from, and younger people find it hilarious.

OMG has it been 20 years since Big died? #feelingold

Is it 2Pac? I think it's really interesting to read about the different suggestions so far...

Right, Liz - didn't think of that.

Ondine (a water sprite)--perhaps harder to yell from the back door since the accent is on the second syllable?

Oreo--that was our cat's name.

A few more ideas, if you need any more. I skimmed through the suggestions. My apologies if I've duplicated.

Rozzie (short for Rosalind, rhymes with Ozzie)

Lulu (reminds me of parts of the word labradoodle), or Lucy or Lily

Daisy

Goldie

Have fun with your new pup!

Would Porridge work (may be its different in the US to the UK?

Or Lizzie ? (Wrong ending may be and too human)?

Would coco work (may be only if dark haired)

Can't wait to see a photo!

What colour is your dog? That might give you some inspo for non-human names.

I found these on old female names.

Flora
Zona
Orpha
Hester
Mercy
Ettie

Ooh, or Nala (after the polar bear dog in Legend of Korea)? No "O" though.

It's Biggie Smalls. Since it's a dachshund, I always say he should have been named Shorty Long, because that's what he really is.

Kanga or Io, although I"m remembering that while I also wanted a one or two syllable max name I decided to steer away from anything that sounded too much like no, sit or stay.

Hi
My dogs a lovely border collie called holly but I call her holly pops or Popsi as a nick name also have another male dog called Sam which could be for a good name for a girl as well or sammy.
I also like the names Tarka and bronte ( as in the sisters) another good way to pick is to call them out loud as you would in park when the dogs running about to see how they sound . My dogs are farm dogs so I have to call them a lot so you have to really like the name. I call them more than my kids lol

Wow they are beauties!

I have had many many pets in my life, and you know what? The name pops out by itself. As soon as the pets starts to show their personality, you find the perfect name! Or you get inspired by some particular physical characteristic.

Just a few more thoughts:

Dorcas
Dorrit
Connie
Chloe
Cloud
Tory
Zola
Bo
Boodle

I'm curious as to which name you'll pick! My girl (the one in my profile pic) is named Frankie. She also goes by Franks or Frankl.

My friend just named her dog Tally (short for Tallulah). I like it.

I would have a few names in mind but wait until you meet the puppy to name her. At that time she will let you know what her name should be - it'll be a feeling you'll get, "you are -----"

Since you like Coraline, how about Cory?

Do not pick Maggie. Every vet has hundreds of dog patients by that name. We had a female dog named Doodah. A litter mate was Zippity. Maybe Zippy would be a little like Ozzy? Ooggy? Google? Oozie? Olive? Odessa?

Agreeing with Sisi and others: wait until your pup arrives. Just as with naming babies, sometimes the name just comes out of the blue. Looking forward to lots of pictures when your furry bundle arrives.

Our pets almost always ended up with 2 names. The name we gave them at the start, and the name they earned over time! DH knows a lot of labs. It seems to go with being a forester-wildlife biologist and hanging out with 'those people'. He knows 'Fiver' (because he cost $500, and 'Cement Head' (though I don't think that was the original name.) Our black lab was 'Ranger' and we knew a\labs named 'Mac'.and a 'Bear'.

Call her 'pup' and live with her a bit first, though I have to admit that I like the name 'Rolo' !

Thanks again for all the fabulous suggestions, ladies There are so many great ideas, but a surprising number of the names you have suggested belong to (human!) family members and friends -- and one of them actually rhymes with my own daughter's name! And then another bunch of names belong to dogs and horses (past and present) of family members or close friends. My English family alone have owned, over the years, a Polly, a Maisie, a Poppy, a Rosie, a Sadie, a Daisy and a Holly. (I have two friends called Holly, too!).

Smittie, the dog will be brown (probably). There are four brown pups in the litter, and one cream one.

Lots of you have suggested Coco, which I think is cute, but the kids really dislike it for some reason.

Jane, Lizzie would totally work for a dog...except Elisabeth is my name. Only a select few are allowed to call me Lizzie, though.

Bethster, Ponyo's a great suggestion, but I've never seen the movie! I'll have to watch it soon. (Nala is also Simba's girlfriend in Disney's Lion King -- it's cute, but works better for a cat).

Isabel, Io is awesome because it's a two-syllable name with only two letters.

Rambling Ann, "Rosanna Arfette" hahahaaaaaaa -- that's as funny as Kermit the Dog.

Sara L, our family is ultimately a monarchy too, for the important stuff. But the dog-naming thing is possibly more important to the kids than it is to us. If only we could get THEM to agree on a name!

SuzyQ2, can't use Cory because it belongs to a human family member.

deb -- Rogue is super cute and not used by someone I know! I'm adding it to my list.

Btw I agree with those of you who say hold off until we see the puppy. That will probably be what happens. At the moment, here are the names on my mental list (not including the ones I like that have been ruled out):

Olly/Ollie
Lilo (LEE-lo, not Lye-lo)
Eliot (Elly)
Watson
Kipling (Kip)

And thanks to you ladies, I'm adding Rogue, Echo, and Io.

I'm glad to hear that Ollie is still on your list.

You may have mentioned it but what type of dog is it?
What about PD (short for prima dogga)

What about Úna which is often pronounced Oona in Scotland/ Ireland?
