We Got A Mouse and....

... it had a baby! We relented and bought Master 11 a cute little black mouse last Friday. He has been asking for one for quite some time. Well the mouse was supposed to be a boy mouse. Master 11 named 'him' Bandit and he adores 'him', BUT this morning Master 11 came running in to my room, extremely excited, and I think a little shocked, to announce that the mouse had had babies. We could only see one but didn't want to move or touch the mummy to see if there was another.

Angie, funny thing was last night DH commented to me that he thought the mouse was looking 'fat'. Well we have only had it 5 days and I said he was imagining it lol.

I was actually offered a kitten on Saturday morning, which I would love to have brought home, but my boys really don't like cats.. .I will have to work on them.

And - I'm not sure if mice are like other rodents, but you may have to separate them from their mother rather soon if you are to avoid more babies....

Oh boy! Congratulations on your new additions. As I think you know, I have had pet rats (though never owned mice) and have a soft spot for rodents. Unfortunately they are fertile SUPER early in life-rats at 5 weeks, and I think mice at 4 weeks old, so surprise pregnancies can happen if they aren't separated right away or if someone (breeder, pet store) mis-identified or misplaced a mouse of the wrong sex! I haven't had that happen from my female rats yet, but always hold my breath until I've had them for over a month with no babies.

This reminds me of the time we looked-after relatives' pet mice whilst they were on holiday. When they returned we had many more mice to give them!

And for an update, there are 6 babies. We think there was only one this morning and mama mouse was mid birthing. I got home first this afternoon and could't wait to send Master 11 out when he got home to see just how many there were.

I'm very happy for you with the excitement of all your new arrivals. But really, all I can think is 'better you than me' :).

I could really get behind the addition of a cat. Cats are glorious creatures and they'd soon solve your mouse 'problem'

Dimity, I am the only one who doesn't have a pet! I adore our dog, but I am not technically a dog person, I am a cat person but DH and DS are so awful about cats:(

Oh and Master 11 was telling us tonight how he wants to keep them all!! Not happening:)

Funny you should say that Dimity, because my sister's partner had a snake for a long time and would let Master 11 go and watch when they fed the snake a mouse!!

I love this one...I had a similar experience..I asked a good friend who had a lab and research mice for two mice for my son...being a good mom into pet care and blah, blah...We had a little cage for these little sweeties in the basement...I go down to do laundry and we had a town...They had multiplied overnight and we had all these little ones...Needless to say, I was not too happy...The lovely man who gave us the mice in the first place was a research scientist and was able to take the mice family back to his lab...I guess I am not such a good mom but i had visions of taking care of the family by myself...as does go the way of pets...Better luck to you with your little family...smile..

Yikes - 6 baby mice? And they can reproduce in 21 days - could that be true? I guess they only nurse for a few hours?

OMG I would Freak!!!! That exact thing happened to us when I was a kid. Little "Raisin" was already preggers when we bought her. I can't remember what we did with the babies!!! Gave them away?

I can't believe how fast these little guys can reproduce.

My boys were never allowed to have creepy crawlys in our house. I know, bad boy mom, but I couldn't handle knowing there was a snake in our home. One time for the Boy Scouts we had to raise a tadpole into a frog. The project stayed in the garage. I used to gag when I went out there to look at the little guy. I "released him into the wild" very gently as soon as it got legs, but I don't think it would have survived.

But we did have Guinea pigs! They were really social and loving. I heard rats make wonderful pets!

CAVEAT: This is a cute story, but my freshman year of college, the girls down the hall in my dormitory got a pet mouse. The same thing happened: it had babies. Within mere weeks, those babies were full grown - or grown enough to be fertile, and the one male impregnated the three female 'babies' AND the mother.

Within three months (and it may have been less time) - they had over 40 mice, and my dorm formally issued a warning that they would be evicted if they didn't get rid of them. This is a true story, and not an urban myth. I saw the mice. The momma and four babies were cute. Around the 20-mice mark, it was horrific.

The girls made the decision that so many responsible college-age students do: they released the mice back into the wilderness. And by wilderness, I mean, outside, in front of the dorm, on Landis Green, at FSU.

I never did hear if any of the surrounding buildings had mice problems...

Wow. That reminds me of when my parents brought home a beagle from the animal shelter, and she had puppies. I had no idea dogs could have that many at a time (12, although one died very early on)!

And maybe this is terrible to say, but I remain rather glad that I am allergic to all things fuzzy. I don't have to be mean and say I WON'T have animals in the house; instead we CAN'T have animals in the house. I don't have any good advice to offer, as I don't know much about rodent reproduction, but best of luck. Reproducing within 4 weeks is kind of scary!
