WDYT: Spring/Summer Capsule

I'm trying to think ahead here because if I wait until it gets hot, I will be wearing the same BF jean shorts and tees that I lived in last summer (see picture 1, photo 1.) I took some time and went through my closet to see what I can actually wear when it gets hot--I have a good assortment of tops (although some are poly that will not wear well when it gets really hot.) My main goal was to come up with some non-denim outfits that I can mix and match. I own everything except the two pairs of shorts that you will see ad nauseum I'm hoping that I can add these to the capsule that was previously populated with denim shorts/capris almost exclusively. I have a few dresses that have survived the cull as well as bermudas--both black and white.

Honestly, I don't know how practical the blazers are with the shorts. I just tried them because I don't have any other suitable toppers besides a lightweight black cropped cardi. I have two other cardis with problematic necklines so those are out of the mix too.

Suggestions for improvement are welcome. I still have time to return the shorts so fire away. Thanks in advance!

So cute, kellygirl! I assume the yellow and blue shorts are new? I vote keep! I also LOVE the striped jacket...so modern looking! Great alternative ( and a better one) then a cardi. Stylish without being off- putting.

Love the more colourful looks throughout the 3 montages, including the bright tops in series 3, although you have a very cohesive summer capsule all around.

Your choice of footwear is spot on.

Think of adding a skirt ( yellow or white) and a pair of white pants, and I think you will have all bases covered.

I really like the shorts! I think they go with everything. The blazers look good, too, but will they be too warm? I really like a lightweight something or other that can be tossed into the purse when not in use. Just an idea!

Kelly busts out the color! Love it. This year, I'm doing the opposite, balancing out my brights-bonanza summer wardrobe with crisp white, navy, etc.

Love the shorts -- and I like the striped blazer with all. You foot wear is stunning. I want your sandals, please! (9 1/2, by any chance?).

The only top I'm not sure of is the brightest one that is third from the left in montage 3. I like the colors, but the style of top reminds me of something that would be layered under a blazer for work wear.

BTW -- I'm been mostly off cardis, but I think this style of short looks terrific with them!

Love the bursts of color, and I like the silhouettes. Unsure if the blazers would be too warm. I freeze in my office, but they would be too warm elsewhere for me.

Also, perhaps you can budget a bit to add more natural fibers to your summer wardrobe. I hear ya on poly being a beast in summer. I don't sweat it in, but I hate how it feels on my skin as it heats up and I feel so much hotter in it.

Ha! Talking about feeling hot and we got an inch of snow today.

It just isn't fair that you always look so good in two pieces : ) Those shorts are terrific, I really like the rolled cuff of the denim.

Love the stripe blazer - it is so fresh - but echo Rae's thought about something lightweight. I've been pondering spring/summer options myself.

Both shorts are good additions! If it's truly hot I think the blazers will be too heavy, but for normal milder warm days they look good. Do the shorts come in other colors? The navy is a good duplicate for the denim and I feel like you may enjoy a third color besides blue (though I do know you wear a lot of blue!); I'm thinking KELLY green (eh? eh??) or orange or mint. The outfits with the yellow shorts feel so much more fun than the navy to me!

Keep!! Shorts are a great fit - and you've got so many fantastic combos. My fav is collage #1 with the b/w blazer. I think the blazer will be very useful - I like to have a jacket with me in the summer to counter the heavy use of air conditioning.

I like what you have so far. Have you considered a white denim jacket? Or are you trying to avoid any more denim? And I agree with a skirt. I find them to be cooler than shorts but ymmv.

Just joking. They look great on you, and wow, the yellow ones are so much fun! I love the outfits with the striped blazer, but agree with the others it might be too warm when you are wanting to wear the shorts. Alas....

I'm awed by your collection of fun tops, I especially like the polka dot one in photo collage 2, and the striped one second from right in #3. WOW!

Definitely keep the shorts - that is a lot of good outfits.

Thanks for the thumbs ups, Everyone! This is still a work in progress. Last summer I felt kind of drab with my neutrals so I wanted to change things up and not play it safe with plain black or denim bottoms. I’m not 100% on these combinations, but it is a start. I’m also relieved to know that it doesn’t look OTT. Summer is especially challenging because there's not much layering going on to add interest--usually just a top and bottom and sandals. I find these kind of outfits the hardest to make look put together. I'm raising the white flag early and abandoning the UWP's for summer--it’s just too hard to stay cool and look like a warrior--I hope to re-join the ranks in the fall.
@Runcaria: Yes, the blue and yellow shorts are the new ones. The striped jacket is an inexpensive topper that I picked up last year. It hasn’t gotten much wear--I’m just starting to adjust my eye to the bold stripes on me. The white/yellow skirt is a great idea too. Thank you!
@rae: Thanks. I think they are pretty versatile. I’m also agreeing that the blazers will be too warm for anything but early spring. I do adore the colors though and will look for a lightweight topper in something more exciting than white.
@BethAnn: LOL! Yes, that is certainly true! I should have put a warning in my title to shield your eyes. I’m SO not a bright person--I like them but usually in small doses. I guess this is my spring/summer style shift. About the top in 3--I really like it but I have a hard time styling that one. It looks so plain with black bottoms and doesn’t really “go” with denim either. I just threw it on thinking it might work.

@Aida: Thanks! So the blazers don’t look bizarre with shorts? I wasn’t sure about that either, really. The shorts came in black, white, periwinkle, and hot pink. I didn’t really like any of the other colors for me. I love the idea of Kelly green! I’ll probably keep the blue ones since I’m trying to phase out some of the denim (because of a “no denim” dress code.) I love mint but I’m trying to build this basic shorts capsule around brights to make it easier. I’m rambling, sorry.
@Brenda: Thanks! I had a white denim jacket that DD has appropriated. I like it but would like to find a non-denim option.
@Suz: Thank you. You crack me up. I think my top situation is in pretty good shape--I’ve been a good shopper this last year. The striped one you like is silk--so that one will work for summer. It’s nice and breezy

So are the shorts in pics 2 and 3 up for consideration? If so, I vote keep! They are both flattering lengths and colors on you.

I'm not sure about the jackets, are they also up for consideration (maybe I should go back and read the other comments). Jackets are a total non-item in my summer wardrobe. Unless I go to SF, I have zero need for jackets and where I live no one air conditions too much. We are thrifty up here in the mountains.

Kelly cute shorts and the injection of colour would be great. I have a slight preference for the length of the denim shorts, but you have awesome legs so the shorter length works really well too.

Good for you for planning the summer wardrobe in advance. Such fun collection of tops. I really like both these shorts. would a denim jacket be too warm for your summer? I almost want to add a little bit more white to these. or may be a white bag when you go out.

Yes! You've got the legs for them, both fit you beautifully, and the outfits are very cute. I especially like ht epolka dot blouse and striped blazer.

Love this idea of planning ahead - and you look great. I say Keep. And your sandals are all great too. I can relate to the BFs and tees. I started buying very lightweight cotton button downs and wear them with my shorts as you're doing here with your gingham. I found two sort of slub cotton "blazers" last year at Nordstroms (I think they were Caslon) but one is white, the other navy and I wore them both a LOT last summer and plan to wear them more again this time around. They are 3/4 sleeve, one button with a soft unstructured semi-cropped fit and work really well over tanks and sleeveless tops.

@Denise: Yes, the shorts are the only new pieces in the capsules. Everything else I already own. I’m glad that you like them. Our summers are similar so I know you can appreciate how much shorts play into my summer wardrobe. I was playing with the jackets but you are right--I’d never wear them during the heat of summer. Still looking for a nice lightweight topper.
@Deborah: Thank you for your honesty. IKWYM about the length. These shorts in my normal size are too short. I sized up and slouched them down to get a decent length. They are right on the edge of what I would be comfortable wearing and I am now thinking about just keeping one pair and looking for a bermuda in a fun color.
@Mona: Thanks! Yes, I’m trying to steer away from denim but my summer handbag is white so I think I have that covered!

You definitely have the legs! I like the shorts and most combos. I love the look of the blazer but I imagine it will be too hot in midsummer even in the bay area unless you will be in ac all the time. I have some short sleeve cardigans made out of lightweight fibers, usually cotton or linen, which I wear like crazy in the summer. Most of mine are from BR, AT (usually the outlet over in San Leandro) or ON/Gap.

Love both pairs of shorts! If I had your legs, I would be in shorts all the time.

All of these outfits look great, and I think you will be well prepared. I hear you on blazers - when it is really hot, I prefer sleeveless blazers/vests as toppers.

Are you looking at jackets only or would you consider thin sweaters? I just picked up a couple of cropped cardigans from Target. They are thin and have elbow length sleeves, so they don't give us ITs too much of a football look.

First off, Kelly, I have to say that you have the BEST shoe collection. I keep looking at the shoes, it's hard to focus on the shorts...

OK, trying to focus... the shorts look great and all of the pairings seem to work so I think they will be very versatile! I like the look of hte blazer with the shorts but I'm not sure it wouldn't be too hot. (Maybe for indoors but I don't know if you'd want to lug the blazer around since you can't really stuff it in a bag like you can a cardi... although maybe a very light unlined knit blazer like "our" Nic and Zoe one might work. Remind me which color you have again?
