Vintage denim jacket, oh the embellishment! ETA pics for fit

While trying to style a new asymmetrical skirt (photos on another post) Lisa P. suggested I might try a less structured top, or a fitted denim jacket. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lisa P!
I do have a plain denim jacket that looks great with the skirt. In my mind’s eye I could see an embellished vintage jacket hanging in one of our closets. I found it! This girl is probably 18 years old. She was made by a small company called Too She She and I found her in a boutique named Spoil Me Rotten. Fun, right?
Ooh! I used to love this jacket and when it fell out of style, I wasn’t ready to part with it. Is it still lovely? If I passed it in a thrift store, would it follow me home? Is it still a good thing, or should I consider it a part of my fashion past? Ummm I am thinking the girl might look too big on me now. What do you think?
I appreciate any comments you care to make. Even if it is time to clear a space in the closet, I sure have had a fun time remembering myself as a hip young(er) thing.

What a gorgeous jacket! Right on trend with the maximalism and embellishment going on.

It does look as if it might be rather big in arms (hard to see here) -- but it might even be worth some alterations!

Is it cropped enough for the skirt?

I am unsure about the size of the jacket. But it's still lovely and looks gorgeous with the black skirt.

Suz, I think it is big in the arms (which I never noticed when I wore it before) and it is not cropped enough to wear the with the new skirt. This jacket falls about hip length and would look better with slim fitting pants or a pencil skirt, I think. Funny..... I used to wear her with everything!

Thank you, The Cat and Jussie. I have left my old friend hanging in my dressing area, so I can see how she looks with some of my newer friends. I am thinking she will need a chunky sweater under her, but we will see.

Gorgeous jacket. A chunky sweater underneath would work beautifully. I saw an embellishment vintage jacket in the vintage store near me. I may go back and try it on.

Yes! I love how the black fringe on the jacket echoes the fringe on the skirt.

It looks like there’s some extra volume at the shoulder-sleeve seam, but maybe that’s from lying in storage?
If not, maybe a subtle, low-profile shoulder pad could fill it out?

I can't tell exactly how this jacket fits, but it may have the same problem as JAileen's wonderful thrifted jacket of similar vintage: the fashion at that time was for roomier, often padded, shoulders, and sleeves big enough to go over other layers easily. Sleeves are narrower now (often to the point of being impractical on coats & jackets) so a fuller sleeve can look a bit dated.
BUT---Wow, what a jacket! And how gorgeous it looks with the black skirt. The fabric embellishment reminds me of Etro's elegant patchworks, and the black background echoes the skirt in a very satisfying way. So I really, really hope that you will keep and wear this jacket! Try it on again with the top(s) you are most likely to wear under it. If the sleeves still look too full to your eye (a little extra room is not a big deal if the proportions work overall) an alteration may be possible. (Again, see JAileen's stunning jacket DIY.) So glad for you that you held on to that beauty, and all that she represents.

Joy, I know! I hadn’t recalled the fringe detail on the jacket. When I put it next to the skirt, I noticed immediately and was very happy.

Ladypainter, a small shoulder pad is a great idea worth trying and if it works would be a very simple alteration.

Tulle, I suspect you are right on all counts. This jacket is from another time, when roomier fits were in. I don’t think I can wear the jacket with the skirt. I’ll try it on with it after I decide which tops will work with the skirt. I have held on to my jacket for this long, so it is worth giving it a whirl with some other items. I am think that black skinnies or a long black slim fitting midi skirt would do a lot to bring the girl back to fab. If it seems necessary, I will take the jacke to a seamstress to see about alterations. I have a feeling that might be quite an undertaking, due to the weight of the denim. She is a hefty girl.

Aquamarine, do think I can wear the jacket with chunky sweaters underneath. I’ll be checking that option out tomorrow!

I have been looking at some of the shows from Fashion Week and it appears to me that paisley is up and coming. Keep!

It's a cool looking jacket but as you already assessed maybe not the right length for the skirt.

It does look big in the sleeve area and my own struggle with denim jackets is the bulk they tend to add, particularly in the chest area for those of us who are large busted.

Worth trying with your current wardrobe to see how you feel.

I love the look of the jacket and I'm not even a denim jacket fan! I love how you have given "her" a personality of her own. I feel love for a few of my own vintage things like that. My 1986 Mondi jersey does still make me feel 25 sometimes. And 80s looks are being revived! I think it would be sad to abandon her...

Jenni, I understand! Some old favorites may be old, may be out of style, but still provide a happiness factor. They earned their place in the closet.

Kkards, I will! Today is going to be an incredibly warm day here, with temps in the high 50s. I am going to wear my jean jacket over a lightweight sweater while I run errands and check out a nearby market that has just opened. I’ll take the old gal out for a walk, too!

Pretty and fun jacket. The arm size is definitely large, but Angie might assess better. You could also consider having it turned into a vest for spring/summer wear...

My first impression was "oh my no" when I looked at it without a person inside it. However, seeing it on you is completely different, and I like it. I think my initial reaction centered on how much embellishment it had so close together when it was lying flat; when there is a person inside it, it transforms into something that looks more like layers and it looks really good on you.

Cindysmith, there is a lot of embellishment. It would be easy to look costumey in the jacket.

Angie, concept is a key word...kind of like theory. A great idea, but sometimes it doesn’t work out. Here are some pics to better see the fit. Whoo boy, the shoulders and arms do look awfully big.

Yes, Deborah, passing it on will make me feel good. I loved wearing it years ago, and never realized how big it was on me. Now that I know better, I need to do better, so I will try to gracefully let the old girl go to a new home.

It’s beautiful and though it doesn’t highlight your figure, I think sometimes oversized denim jackets can be cozy and fun with casual stuff.
