I am a long confessed thriftter, and the reasons why just seem to be endless. Take for example this vintage Christian Dior coat. When I spotted it, I just about toppled over. However, it's important in a store that's negotiable, never to let the salesperson know how much you want it. I took it up to the front, and the salesman advised me that it was half off that day. I expressed hesitancy, and said I don't really need another coat. My friends that were with me were shocked (I didn't share my strategy with them)! The salesman then lowered the price, not once, but twice. Final verdict: $10.00 !!! {HUGE WIN}

Both the coat and dress were thrifted from shops in Los Angeles, which generally are quite pricey (for thrift that is) since thrifting is now a fad. Yet, in total, my coat and dress came out to less than $20 USD

Sequins dress- August Silk
Leather riding boots- Ciao Bella
Leather gloves- Victoria's Secret online, about 8 years ago
Leather clutch- Vintage, thrifted

Not bad for the price, right?!

I am truly in love with this coat! I told myself that I
would not buy another coat, because prior to moving to Southern California from
Michigan, I gave away about 15 coats (including two winter white ones), and yet I still have a jammed coat
closet...This coat however, was reason enough to break all of my rules! LOL!
The pinstripe, the shimmery silver thread used, the beaded buttons, and the
lining which is perfectly intact- I mean, no matter what the salesman
said, I am sure that I would have gotten
the coat anyway:) Unfortunately the shop that I got it from has since closed down. It
was a thrift outlet center for the Jewish Women's Council.

I've worn it with a few pieces (even jeans), and it just seems to make
anything I wear look fabulous

@Suz I did get to show it off! We spent a week in Las Vegas,
and the photos were taken inside our hotel after dinner

You look fabulous and I love both the coat and dress.

I have a question for those who have great thrift finds like these. Do you think most thrift stores have great things that just need to be discovered? I have always thought it depends on the area the thrift store is located in..for example my area of the midwest is pretty low average income level which means there are very few people who shop at i.e. JCrew or Anthro. let alone higher end brands. Our mall just got a JCrew but besides that we have a low rated Macys which means no even semi -designer lines there and the rest of the stores are more geared towards teens. Just wondering if I am not patient enough or am I wasting my time at local thrift and TJ Maxx type stores?

I would say it depends. I like to frequent off the beaten
path resale shops and I find that they usually have vintage pieces in hiding.
There is one that I go to that's off the beaten path, yet it has more modern
finds and brands. I recently discovered that they purchase their lots from
non-profit organizations. Really then, the possibilities are limitless as to
what you'll find, because you never know exactly where those pieces/lots came
from (city-wise). There was a chain that I used to frequent back in Detroit,
and even though some of the areas were lower income, the shops seemed to have
the BEST vintage finds at very, very low prices. I miss that... Here in SoCAL,
Goodwill is a good place to search for a variety of finds. Vintage, high end,
and mid-end. The prices are already set, and they have weekly specials.

I find that I frequent different types of shops. Some are
better suited for vintage, whereas others are better suited for more modern
style and premium brands.

I only wish we had a thrift store like that. Instead, we have a "consignment" shop run by a very savvy prior boutique manager who has a really great eye for clothing. She probably would have charged -- and gotten -- much, much more for that coat. A real thrift shop, especially one run as a non-profit, is a completely different animal. I miss those...they remind me of when I was little and my mom used to take us to one (we were a big family, and that store got us a lot of great winter coats).

That is just an amazing coat and it looks so, so stunning on you. Keep it forever, and then pass it on!!!

I'm with njw--haven't gotten the positive experience of finding nuggets in our local thrift shops. However, maybe I haven't gone often enough, so there's that feedback loop thing. Same for consignment--having a hard time finding true collector vintage or not-dated designer stuff. I had just a bit of luck with some basics. I have realized the right attitude is needed--always need to view it as "research", just browsing with no pressure for success on any given day.
I did find that it could be an interesting way to see "dated" things outside of my own closet and try to sharpen my eye.

@viva Consignment shops are tricky indeed, for the workers
often know the value of what they have. A non-profit like you said- is another
animal, one that I love! Usually things are all grouped together, and the
brands are not necessarily important. Sure you run across the occasionally
overpriced item because it still has the original sales tags on it, but it is
nothing like a consignment shop or vintage boutique. I live for thrift shops
that are hidden (like the ones from back in the day), and in local urban neighborhoods,
sometimes targeting low income families. Those usually are packed with goodies.
I shop there, and I also donate my department store buys to the same thrift stores
that I shop #PayItForward

@unfrumped the right attitude is oh so key! I go to look and
peruse. If I go with a definite thing in mind, 9 times out of 10 I don't find
anything. I find that I enjoy the 'hunt', and usually feel happy even if I didn't
find anything. There seems to be something satisfying in the search

My favorite thing I ever found in a thrift was in college (1980s). It was a white tuxedo-style jacket from Yves St Laurent Paris. Fit like a glove and was so so elegant. Sigh.

@Lantana I must say, the black and white concept is a relatively new to me. I've been drenched in colours for so long! LOL! I find the black and white to be refreshing, even alluring. There are more like combinations planned
