Vertical Stripes

I love wearing stripes, mostly horizontals but I do have a couple of verticals for the summertime.

When the weather gets too hot and humid, I'll usually pull out these linen blend culottes to run errands and pair them with either of these two vertical stripe tops. The ruffle one is a cotton blend, and the other a linen blend.

Now there is some debate on whether vertical stripes are actually more slimming or not, but I have my doubts about that lol. I just simply enjoy them as a pattern all on their own, they have a certain simplicity and crispness that seems to suit my personal style.

How do you feel about vertical stripes? Do you prefer solids or other patterns instead?

I like your vertically patterned tops, Dee. It's a great casual look with the linen culottes and sandals.

While I much prefer solids to patterns, I do wear wear a few blue & white striped shirts, and a blue & white gingham-patterned shirt in the summer. I prefer vertical stripes for the same reasons you do, but they seem scarce on the ground compared to horizontal stripes. I have two that I've had for years. Would love to find more, especially sleeveless.

Kate you’re so right about horizontal stripes dominating the market right now but I have also seen quite a few oversized blue and white vertical striped button downs as well.

I like stripes on a piece by piece basis (as with everything else). I think I wear more prints than solids, especially in the summer. Anyway, you look great in your vertical stripes!

I never met a stripe I didn’t like! That said, I agree with Kate that vertical stripes aren’t that common. You’ve sourced some winners, there.

I do like stripes but might have overdosed for a while.....so I haven't added any since 2020.

I love an asymmetrical stripe like on the pleated dress.

I haven't worn the fitted sheath since about 2018 - I don't know if I will wear it again - it's in the holding zone!!

Those are cute tops. I like vertical stripes but am picky. Some can look too sun chair or night dress to me. I think they are slimming, in an illusional way, because the eye is drawn up and down and not side to side.

Both tops are pretty ( I'm partial to blue color myself ).
I like stripes but in moderation and preferably in somewhat lower contrast - not jet black/white, better - soft blue/white or soft grey/white.

Sal - I too have to restrain myself from overdosing on stripes, but I must say I really like your asymmetrical stripe dress too.

Star- I agree that some vertical patterns can look a little too garden patio. Yikes, don't want that either.

Slim cat - I don't really go for big thick contrasting stripes either.

Runcarla - Oh yes, I’m a sucker for a good stripe too.

I like stripes in principle but as a person with a big bust I find they often distort (esp knits) and the look is strange, at best

I like the type of top you have here though. Especially the second for the way it shows the shaping of the sleeves.

I love a good stripe, both horizontal and vertical, it's pretty much the only pattern I'll wear. I'll usually go for a slightly bolder horizontal (like a breton stripe), while I like my vertical stripes more subtle.

I like those on you! I don't like stripes for my own style. They just don't look right with my curvy shape. I prefer solids, blendy prints, or Asian inspired prints instead.
I do have this set, which has stripes on the arms and down the sides of the legs, but no other stripes.

I'm not much of a stripe person . I do own a couple of the traditional navy/white striped t-shirts and sweatshirts but they are never my go-to's. I like these linen tops and don't find the vertical stripes odd in any way. I wonder proportion-wise though if they might work tucked in t (or at least French-tucked) o temper some of the length and volume on you?

LJP - funny #2 was my attempt at doing something a bit oversized, not sure the top could be semi-tucked with these culottes, but I could give it a try.

You look great in your vertical stripes. Stripes are my favorite print but I prefer solids. I like stripes to be of even width and two colors.

I love vertical stripes but as with horizontal ones, I keep an eye on the width - too wide might overwhelm me. I like these tops on you. I don't find them too oversized but the second one maybe a bit too long. But both look good on you.

I LOVE classic stripes, and your vertical stripes look festive and fab, Dee!

These are very effective outfits for hot weather! The flutter sleeve in #1 is super pretty on you. So are the brighter colours!

We lived in the French countryside for a while, and these outfits remind me of that. You look charming!

Cute tops! I especially like varying widths of stripes together and more than 2 colors, like you show here. I do think it's harder to find tops with vertical stripes than it is to find pants or dresses.

I love every kind of stripe, LOL. Like you, I tend to have more horizontals, but I will happily wear vertical stripes as well. Or -- often! -- a combo! Here are a few of my summer striped items.

Stripes are definitely MY pattern. But I'm not sure if I have any vertical ones... hmm... interesting. Not for any particular reason, I think I've just not come across them in items I wanted to purchase.
