Updating my jeans capsule; edited with comparison photos of two sizes (scroll down a ways)

I recall a blog post some time ago about updating one's denim capsule (and I can't find it now). At the time, I didn't feel the need to do so myself. And then, recently, I did suddenly feel I wanted some new options in my jeans wardrobe. I've been keeping an eye out, especially for inexpensive options, and I brought home a few pairs the other day. I'm pretty sure at least one, and probably two, are keepers. But I'd like your opinions!

1st pair (1-3): cropped high-rise jeans with wide cuff (Pilcro, ultra-high-rise cuffed jeans). I liked them as soon as I put them on. These feel like "my" version of cropped wide-legs. (Though they are not wide-legs. eta--Correction: they are not VERY wide legs. Glad to hear Angie clarify that they are in fact wide-legs!)

2nd pair: High rise cream tapered-leg jeans (Levi's Wedgie Icon jeans). I am not wearing my white boyfriend jeans this summer, and I thought this would be a fun sort-of replacement, for a change. I recall reading about the "wedgie" jeans here on the forum and thinking, "thanks, NO!" But surprise: I like them on. Maybe they feel better than they look, though.

3rd pair (7-9): High-rise mint tapered-leg jeans (Levi's Wedgie Icon jeans). Same as above, but in mint color. I think these are going back. The color is pretty, but I don't feel it's really me. If the hue were a little more muted, I would be more comfortable with it. Also, this pair feels tighter than the cream pair, even though they are the same size. Not quite as comfy.

Potential 4th pair (not pictured, but included in finds): I also have another pair of jeans coming to me from Lucky, the Sweet straight-leg jeans, in a medium blue wash. They were on sale for a great price, and I ordered them with the thought of machine-embroidering them.

And, what I wore shopping (10-11): White straight leg jeans (Lucky, Sweet jean), taupe and white scroll-print cowl-neck top (made by me), taupe oxfords (Paul Green), espresso short knitted, quilted jacket (OSKA), taupe and cream bag (Fossil).

I appreciate any comments you may have on my jeans-update-on-a-budget!

A great idea to update with budget jeans as a trial. I like all of them. And with your talent for styling no one would every know the difference if you had not told us.

I have a hard time tearing my eyes away from your beautiful tops to look look at the jeans, but all look good, from the photos I like the third pair ( mint green) the best. The big cuff on the first is distracting in the photos but probably does not show up as much in real life. The second pair look a little big, but I want that silver top.

Of all the straight jeans, I like your old pair #10-11 best (length, leg fit).

The cropped wide legs...first you have to keep in mind my judgements on them have been quite erratic and inconsistent!...
So, the cropped wide legs I'd like better at the length worn by the model (shorter, then). I also find the big cuffs really look like big cuffs, not like an intentional design twist, if that makes sense?

I think you look good with a high waist (as we see in #8) and you look even better in the cropped wide silhouette, both are good options to update your jeans capsule. If you have the patience, keep on looking for better pairs.

The Levis wedgies look fantastic on you. Great fit. I like the first pair of jeans with the big cuffs but they look like they might be a size too big. It could just be the way they are falling in the photograph.

I like the cuffed pair more than I want to admit. They look great on you, and I think it only takes some adjustment of the eye because it's not a silhouette we have seen much. I purchased a wide leg crop large cuff pair of trousers that were on sale made by Sea. They look very different in person than photographed on the model. I think you should consider keeping them. I super love the top you are wearing with these! The colors are perfect for you!

I like the second pair of jeans pictured also. I like that they are a bit loose, and I like the frayed hem. I like the top, in fact, all the tops are great, but the first one is my favorite. The black and white a close second.

I am not fond of the mint green.

Jeans updates can be fun or stressful, it seems that yours is leaning the first way, which is great.

I really like the dramatic cuffed first pair, but they may be a little big. I'd like to see them in a size down.

I am so-so on the Levi's. When comparing the cream pair with white Luckys you wore when shopping, I much prefer your old jeans. And great shopping outfit, btw, the top is fantastic.

First of all, the shopping outfit is Killer - my favourite jeans on you of all.

#1 - Pilcro jeans look fabulous. Are you sure you don't need a size down? (Btw, they ARE a version of wide crops - simply more streamlined).

Both pairs of "wedgie" jeans look good, although I'd hack the length! (Queen Pedantic About Pant Lengths is alive and well).

When you look so great in your shopping outfit, it is hard to see past it to the new jeans contenders. I like #1 the best, and think how the sheen or colour of the cuff picks up colours from your top is genius. Your tops are the stars here.

The white frayed jeans need to be shortened (chopped) - maybe an niche?

Not a fan of the mint coloured ones. Sorry!

Thanks for all your very thoughtful comments! It really helps to get your perspectives, as it's so hard to judge sihouettes, fit, lengths, etc. on myself, especially when I'm dealing with new styles like this.

I will admit I'm not enamored with the photos of me in the Pilcro jeans. I loved them in the store and again in front of my own mirror. In the photos, I'm not completely happy with the proportion of the cuff and the length on me, but I'm wondering if it's partly because I'm comparing myself to the long-legged model--never a winning proposition! I may try playing with the cuff and seeing if I can make it look less jarring. I also think I will go back to the store and see if the next size down is available to try. While I like the way this size feels, sometimes there isn't that big a difference in sizes, and if the next smaller one fits, it may look better.

I'm going to return the mint ones. I don't think I'd wear them.

I wore the cream ones today!! Angie, after I saw your comment, I turned up the hem a couple of inches. I kind of liked them that way. I don't know if I want to cut them or just continue to wear them turned up. They are comfortably loose, but not baggy, and I really, really like the way they look and feel. They are kind of like a very high-waisted slim boyfriend fit, and the denim is substantial.

Thanks for the compliments on my shopping outfit and on my tops! It's nice to know the jeans I wore shopping still work well, even though they are a little tighter on me this year than they were last year.

Firecracker, your jeans may feel tighter when you wear them, but they certainly do not look that way in these pictures. You look really beautiful.

The Pilcro jeans look great from the front, but the excess fabric at the back pooches at the bottom of the pockets which says "too big" to me. I bet a size down would fix the problem. I seem to always buy my pants too big and end up regretting it after a few hours of wear.

Love the white jeans - this may be the year I finally break down and buy some, if I can find a pair that doesn't calf suck! The mint color doesn't seem like you although they look great from a fit perspective.

Hi all--
here are photos comparing the two sizes of the Pilcro jeans.
Photos 1 & 2 are the larger size.
Photos 3 & 4 are the smaller size (one size down).

I may end up deciding based on feel, but I'd be interested in your input on how they compare visually.

Definitely #3/4 - the derrière fits so much better. Are they 100% cotton or is there some synthetic? Sometimes (like, lots of times!) blends stretch over the course of the day, and what was comfortable becomes too loose, and what is snug, fits just right.

Thanks, Runcarla. These are 100% cotton, and a thick denim with not much give. I think 100% cotton can stretch, too. I'm trying to wear the smaller ones around the house a little while to see what happens.

Wear the smaller ones for at least a few hours, including sitting. I always seem to buy jeans based on the store fit and then have to wash them after even a short wear because they bag so much. I recently bought some NYDJ linen trousers that seemed great and after an hour they were falling off. I had not taken off the tags, so was able to return them for a smaller size.

The size smaller does not look tight at all from the front or rear view, but fits much better. Obviously comfort is key, but from a looks perspective, the smaller is good.

Both look wonderful from the front but the smaller pair look better from the back:)

I think the length is great but the cuff could be reduced in size, maybe about 1/3?

I think the smaller pair are better, seem more in proportion. I like the cream pair, and the shopping outfit. Well done with returning the mint pair.
