Updating eyeglasses

I haven't been paying attention to new eyeglass styles this year, but it's been two years since I updated my frames, and I'm not really feeling the slight cat eye thing for me so much anymore. I do love keeping my frames in shades of not-too-bright blue/green or neutral. Frames are challenging for me because my face and head are small, but my features are not delicate. Frames overwhelm me very easily. Also, there is something about the depth of my bridge that means I can't do glasses without nose pads, or at least I've never had a pair work for me -- they sit too low, slide down my nose, and hit my cheeks and eyelashes.

What's looking fresh these days? Any suggestions? I may go take a look one day this week.

*Sigh* I'm due in November, and have just started the search. Cat's eye really works for me, and I'm pondering replicating my current specs in another colour way. Not sure.

No hard data, but I have a 'feeling' that round retro style specs are a thing ATM.

You have some super cool sunglasses. Would any of those shapes work well for you?

Carla, sunglasses seem a little easier because the dark lenses help mask some of the issues that make regular glasses more difficult. Interestingly enough, my two favorite pairs of sunglasses are vintage, from Europe, with my prescription put in them.

I'm also trying to hit a balance with eyeglasses -- I want them to have enough personality, but not be *busy*. I already have color in my hair and I wear earrings every day. I don't want crazy or overly bold glasses. But I don't want boring or too classic either. I'm not sure where that puts me!

I'm in the same spot, and following with interest. I've never done the cat-eye (mine are the darker edgy librarian style) but have no idea what's new. I went into a new hipster eyeglass store about a month ago and left with no helpful information . I DO NOT want to look like a kooky middle aged woman wearing kooky frames and crazy earrings and spiky hair.

I have the Hugo in the 8 colour (tortoiseshell and eggshell). I have always liked her styles - both in fashion and eyewear. Possibly not available in the US but maybe some inspiration.

(I had a look at her new arrivals and she is all about zebra and snakeskin just like the NAS).

Did a little more research into what is trending. Defined uppers with no rims on the bottom seem to be another popular trend, along with aviators (which go against Angie's guide to lift up at the outside), big square 80's styles, and translucent/transparent frames. Of all of these I think the first one has the most promise.

Maybe a vintage/classic frame would work for regular specs too?

I need nosepads as well, and it's a HUGE limitation or maybe a blessing since there's not many choices, at least in the coolest stuff. I also have a strong Rx and need progressive lenses. Sigh. I am tempted to order online so I can have multiple pair rather than pay close to $500, but am paranoid that I will screw up.

warby parker has a line of low bridge glasses that you might try.

they have a great mail trial and return policy even if you have your prescriptions put in them. they also have storefronts.

I'm in the same position. When I lost weight I lost it from my face too. My current glasses overwhelm my face now. I haven't had the heart to start this search yet. Perhaps the information on this post will help motivate me.

I just went for mine last week, and have the same issues with finding the right frames. Now I just looked at the rack that my insurance covers, but saw mostly smaller rectangular shapes. This time I went with plastic frames, brown and red-but tried some greyish blue ones that you may like.

I have a pair similar to Sal, it’s a crystal clear pair but still a plastic frame with some heft. I love a cat eye but it’s not the best shape for my face. I have tried a modified version, more rounded, and it was okay. It’s one of my favorite frames purchased last year. I wear it with my statement earrings, although I also wear colored frames with them as well.......although It’s ALGO!

Another option no one mentioned yet are thin titanium wire frames. I purchased a pair this year that are octagonal. The metal is tinted blush and mint green. I believe they are made by a company called Lafont Issy and LA. They are subtle but not the same as the frameless Silhouette glasses that I have owned in the past. I get a lot of complements when I wear them.

i hate buying new glasses....last time, it took me +6 months of shopping and trying....
and i'm not going at knowing when its time to update...so please, if/when my glasses past their wear by date, let me know!

Ah, I see I'm not alone! Thanks for all the suggestions, words of wisdom, and commiseration. I'd be curious to see Angie chime in.

On first glance it almost seems like anything goes (thick bold frames! wire frames! aviators! cat eyes!), so I feel a bit overwhelmed by options. The truth of the matter is, I want distinctive yet sophisticated. Not something that competes with my face -- many "quirky" styles really are too much for me and my current style goals. It is very easy to cross the line into seeing the glasses rather than me. I don't mind that in sunglasses but not for regular glasses.

I have had success with LaFont frames in the past, Staysfit. I may need to look at their current offerings.

I ended up going metallic when I bought my latest pair. My other pairs are strong colors (burgundy, navy) and I wanted something lighter.

These read more as bronze on top with gold rims. That works well w my coloring and makes them feel more like jewelry than statement glasses.

Lisa, Krewe looks very cool! The Rampart wire frame looks really interesting, but there is nowhere near me to try them. I can't imagine ordering glasses that unique without being able to try them on. Sigh.

On second thought, that style would probably just make my already large nose look enormous. Never mind! LOL

I went specs shopping about four months ago and ended up picking two pairs because I couldn't decide. That's the first time ever that I own two pairs at once... Another pair of plastic frames, more square than the frames I had lately. They're tortoise - black, brown, blue and yellow. And I got oversized (for me) metall frames with nose pads. They're two tone, matte black and brushed silver. These do have a bit of a cateye, which works well for me. I thought I'd prefer the plastic frames, but I've been wearing the metal frames almost exclusively. I like how lightweight they are (also visually). And the nose pads are so comfortable, I didn't expect that.

I also have a shallow nose bridge and glasses constantly slide down and hit my cheeks! I agree that nose pads help - but that doesn't stop me from trying on dozens of pairs looking for pad-less frames that sit high enough! If you have any luck on such a rare find, report back!

I like that they offered the light weight of a wire frame but the visual "heft" of the chunkier plastic styles that I like. And of course the nose pads keep them sitting nice and high on my face.

Okay. If you want to see what my 87 year old mom got for her new glasses, here is the photo. Totally cool cat eye glasses, in a color I never thought I’d see her wear, after years of wearing the same type of ugly large brown plastic frames. Thanks to my sister, who brought her to See glasses in Los Angeles!

I agree sunglasses are always easier than eyeglasses, since they're more fashionable from the start.

I've been wearing some dark sounded cat eye frames from Gucci for the last two years, and am also feeling ready for an update. Like Gretchen, I'm interested in something a bit lighter (maybe also because it's summer?).

I've been wearing glasses more frequently lately, especially for work where I get tired of messing with readers. I don't really like shopping for specs, I find it overwhelming. I got Kate Spade earlier this year in tortoise with orangey red sides. I think this is them.

I have the most luck with Oliver Peoples frames; they just seem to fit me well. I have a pair in a pretty shade of blue that I still wear even though it's not my most current Rx. I also have a pair of Tiffany with dark fronts and the Tiffany blue sides, which I didn't wear much as they just weren't as comfortable.

I've tried Krewe too; they have some interesting styles.

Carla and Astrid - the glasses my mom is wearing are made by “See” eyewear, lol; that was not a capitalization error. That is the brand name. She went to see “See” frames, and bought those great ones!

I don’t think I can shop online for frames. Approximately one out of a hundred actually look acceptable on me, LOL. I can’t imagine ordering enough to find a pair that works for me. I am just one of those people who does not look cool in glasses. Especially not in glasses that are “cool.”

I suppose I’ll have to take an afternoon sometime soon and go visit some eyewear shops.

I just ordered a pair of See CORE glasses model 0543 in a blush color. They had quite a nice selection of glasses that were just a little different....

The young graphic artists (male and female) in my office are wearing round styles — quite large round frames on the women. I just ordered two new pairs, this pair in green from a company called Res/Rei

I ordered both based purely on comfort as I have a fussy nose. I need to switch frames each day to avoid problems.

Those are really cool, Aliona. That’s the kind of thing I wish I could wear, but they end up wearing me.

I was at an art event last night, where many interesting frame styles are always in evidence, and realized that some people have a great ability to carry a very distinctive frame that becomes a big part of their look. Lots of colorful frames, especially. But unless I already know the person, I tend to see the glasses before I see anything else, and I don’t think that’s what I want for me. So I want something interesting, yet quietly so. I’m not sure where that takes me. I haven’t had a chance to go frame shopping yet.
