Unusual colour crush?

Have you got a crush on an unusual or new-to-you colour this season? This isn’t a monogamous relationship with black, or a long term love affair with navy, but rather having a fling with a colour that tugs at your heartstrings and begs to come live in your closet, or maybe a colour that insinuated itself more subtly into your wardrobe and you are tempted to build a capsule of compliments.

I am taking a number of different greens out for a spin, ranging from jade to forest. I am not sure what will stick.

I started a plum capsule last fall with a pleated skirt, pants, and sleeveless top. Then I got “eggplant” loafers to match. I’ll expand it if I find the right pieces.

I traditionally wear quite a bit of olive, but I've also been drawn to a more mossy, almost avocado, green this summer, like in this dress:

I have only dabbled but want to push things a bit further… These four finds represent a colour that is relatively new for me. The bag is the only one that as a solo piece I find a bit harder to wear - it was a gift and I do really like it. The dress gets worn with white or tan accessories only), the rust has been very easy and the lilac also,

I think there is a move away from my comfort zone ( colour plus neutral) to colour on colour, and also to tonal combinations and some more muted softer shades. I still like denim and colour, or camel and red, but I think unique combinations look very fashion forward.

My unusual color crush was a pattern and happened this summer - florals!

I've also added a turquoise-y teal sweater for winter - very much not what I usually wear. It's the turtleneck under the patterned sweater in the photo.

I’ve been thinking about adding some dusty pink for a while. I like it with brown, burgundy, teal, olive green, black (colours that I wear a lot). Also grey and ivory (which I wear a little). I’ve collected some colour palettes and am trying to add carefully. So far only a pair of sandals for summer.

Not really. Cream wouldn’t count would it?- but it has been added back for the first time in maybe decades in my new cream jumper. Having bought that in May I have worn 22 times already.
And adding back the 1995 hand knitted one as well with the black and cream was fun, have worn that 11 times since also.
For me it may be my *favourite* colour which changes- which was red from late teens-40s, gradually changed to cobalt, and very slowly since about 2013 is changing to olive. All 3 are still represented but olive may be taking over. I don’t really mix those 3 colours with each other, it sort of offends my eye to do so. I do mix the olive with bronze or gold happily.

Mine would be this colour, but I always forget what it is called. I would buy a scarf, necklace or shoes in this colour. Actually yellow is my favourite colour…so happy. I like lime and bright shades of green as well but I would only wear as accessories.

I've actually been quite adventurous lately. Fuchsia and hot pink have been my accent recently; it started with a winter coat and then I added a blazer and a top. Oh, and I just got a pair of faux suede leggings in a light cognac color and a cream utility jacket - both are a huge departure for me, as I normally wear black (no browns or earth tones) and never wear white or cream. Anything white I've purchased in the past has become an orphan, so I am hoping I can become comfortable with these new pieces. I love them, but I will probably need to force myself to wear them to get used to the idea.

Yes , and I’m struggling for what to call it . Muted plum ? Dusty plum ? Not purple , not burgundy but somewhere in there - but very dusty .

I am currently into fire hydrant red! (And I am in a monogamous relationship with Dusty Plum )
Also discovering greys, pale yellow, all purples and lilacs and burgundys. There are so many beautiful colours to wear!

It's been beige/tan/camel for me this year, which is very unusual for me! The safari trend has been influential- but I just want the colors, not the big breast pockets. Not an area I want to draw attention to!
I definitely want to add more chocolate brown and burgundy too, possibly charcoal grey.
Looking through my finds, I only bought a few non neutrals. But I have So Much Color in my wardrobe from before to balance out.

@Runcarla, light rust would look great on you. I think it would play well with the rest of your colors also.

@JenniNZ love the cream on you, and hooray for adding back a hand knit item. I have an eggplant cozy knit cardigan I am thinking of adding back but it may still look too dated….very 80’s, but it looks good with turquoise, in fact, I used a turquoise button!

@Brooklyn, love the dark teal with the dusty roses in picture 7. Very pretty. Picture 3 could be one section of my current wardrobe….love that palette as well!

@Sally, my DD lovingly refers to this color family as “funny yellow green”. (Lime, chartreuse, citron, etc.). I have adopted her term because it makes me happy….not funny looking, but funny because it makes you happy….(she started saying it when she was very little and it stuck).

I think my unusual colour crush is still wrapped up in a scarf I've had for many years. To my eye it's a delicious mix of pink, orange, brown, cream and yellow.

I've never really had the other pieces I envision to support it, so it has often gone unworn, despite my love for it. Maybe it will work this year with my new cream sweater.

Caramel/toffee has become my new color obsession. Darker than camel, more yellow than cognac… I’ve found it secondhand, but not really any in retail.

Also, tomato red and burnt orange. I have a couple of chunky scarves and now a cashmere turtleneck in the color and I love it with my greens, blues, and browns.

@ CarolS - I call those kinds of things a ‘wardrobe focus’. I might develop a whole capsule around the item, even if I don’t actually use the item. I did this with a piece of costume jewellery - tarnished silver, with emerald green and pale blue ‘stones’. Hardly ever wore the necklace, but built a capsule of dark green, pale blue, navy, grey, and black!

Fun thread! I am really into this murky blue that goes by a variety of names. It's more muted than teal and has less green/more gray in it. I love it and search for it all the time!

That's a good way of looking at it Carla! I do often evaluate things based on whether they would work with 'the scarf". I will slowly accumulate a capsule for the darned thing!

I’ve been wanting to add to my dark teal complement and coming up empty.

The Inge soft green is alluring.

And not a colour, but my eye is being sidetracked by everything in a blue and white ticking stripe…

Adding a shot of "the scarf" for fun. The mix has been one of my colour crushes for a while. Another is teal with earthy yellow greens and olive (once again in a scarf!) I dug up a pre-COVID photo of that one, too.
