Thanks everyone for your ugly sweater party suggestions. The result turned out to be a combination of them!
I found this simpler top new with tags on at the hospital op shop for 6$. Dogs-win, red-win, long sleeve t not bulky sweater -win. Fit and neckline not so good, and design is cheapo iron on sort :p.
Paired it with my red lace BR skirt, tall boots, and maxi cardi-to try to make it look like a real outfit. Then tossed my wine purple coat over the lot for the cold.
