Ugly Sweater Party

We’ve been invited to an Ugly Sweater Christmas party. I thought this was just a Millenial thing. I told the hostess I didn’t have any ugly sweaters. She said Walmart, $20. Okay. I found a sweater at Macy’s that I think is ugly - ugly shade of red, and it’s icky acrylic. I showed my knitting friends yesterday, and they agreed with my husband that it isn’t ugly.

What do you think? Is it JUE (Just Ugly Enough)?

Do you have Scottie dogs?? The find is cute to my eyes. In reality I bet you’ll be fine as long as you wear something holiday themed.

CC, yes, I do have a Scottie. He’s not ugly, though, he’s very handsome.

I’ve ordered a few classic ugly sweaters, but they haven’t arrived. You know, Santa in a flying saucer shooting out candy canes. That kind of thing.

Not ugly! Cute! But it might do. Would you ever wear it again? Or would you donate it to your thrift store after?
Couldn't you wear one of your pretty festive sweaters and just pretend you think it's ugly?!

Jenni, I’m not sure about wearing it again. I would probably keep it in case the hostess did this again. I noticed her 20 something daughter wore a classic ugly Christmas sweater last year. It was probably her idea!!

It's probably a good idea to keep it in case she does this again, if you can stand it hanging around. Do you keep a dress ups area? We do. In our new house it is 3 shelves of the storage room. The girls who are now 27 and 25 come to raid the dress ups. We can do anything from a toga party to Mexican sombreros from there. Is the fake sombrero cultural appropriation? - Dianna? Only just occurred to me!

I think it's cute but that it will fit the bill so that you won't stand out too much at the party as not complying with the dress code. I would wear it unironically, but that's me

I think it's a bit too cute to be ugly! But it is definitely a little over-the-top, which might be JUE.

What about making a few tinsel "necklaces" to wear with it to make it a little tackier?

I don't think it's ugly either. I think an ugly sweater needs to have something big and gawdy on it that clashes with absolutely every thing.

Why do people insist on having these themed parties?

That is SO annoying, to be told to go spend twenty bucks on something you hate and will never wear again. How about if you just light a candle with a flaming twenty at the party? It is. So. Wasteful.

I saw another Fab member suggest wearing a couple of strings of battery-powered twinkle lights around your neck, and I liked that idea. Then you can put the lights and a few pine cones and ornaments in a glass jar - instant center piece!

I don’t really think that qualifies as ugly enough ...but I did see some aweful funny / ugly looking Christmas sweaters that might qualify strolling through Walmart on my way to their pet department .

Jenni, we do have a few things, mostly leftover from Halloween over the years.

Christina, I hope you’re right, that this is close enough and that it looks like I tried. I don’t want to be that grumpy person. Really I never dreamed I’d be forced into something like this.

Toronto girl, yes, that’s what I’ll do - add some tacky jewelry or lights or something.

Cee, in addition to acrylic and color, I think it’s what a young girl might like, as opposed to a vintage person like me.

Wandra, please see the other sweaters I ordered. They won’t be here in time though.

Lisa, just think of how much money we could have donated to the food bank if we weren’t buying these sweaters. So dumb.

Roberta, yes, I think I’ll add something tacky to my outfit.

Don’t worry, of course they will know you have made the effort You say the material is icky acrylic- that doesn’t show in the photo. That might just be the JUE element needed, right?

Ugly Sweater Parties can be a lot of fun and this sweater would fit right in. You think it's ugly and that's a good reason to wear it.

Can you borrow one from a friend?
My husband’s office is having one of these parties too - I agree about the waste of money. I found an appropriate shirt at Penney’s for $7 - he got the reindeer pattern.

My husband and I actually joked about us each picking up a Walmart ugly sweater (just to show up at our kids house) for their reaction alone !

It would actually be hilarious since we all dress up for Christmas meals / family get togethers in our very best ! Of course we just couldn’t bring ourselves to waste the money either ....but I do think the Grandkids would get a kick out of it !

You can always buy or use a cute sweater and simply baste-stitch on tinsel or garland and some pom-poms here and there. Stick on a few pre-made bows, and you're all set. You can just clip the basting stitches and remove the ugly parts when you get home and you will still have a nice sweater to use the rest of the year.

Pil, I don’t know anyone who has one. I like the shirt you got for your husband. I should add that I only paid $17 for this sweater. I was looking online and found one my husband loves. I ordered it even though he can’t make the party. He’s planning to wear it on Christmas! He usually wears a shirt and a nice cashmere sweater.

Taylor, I want to see what you end up with. We dress nice but casual. So jeans and a nice sweater. The leg lamp will be a departure for him. I will not be wearing the red sweater, though.

Echo, that’s what my knitting friends suggested. I’ll think about that. I have tiny tiny lights that I could attach somehow. The battery pack could go in my pocket.

We had dinner last week at a German restaurant where their was an ugly sweater office party. There were several normal sweaters to which lots had been added to make them over the top. Tinsel or string a bunch of pompoms for a necklace, pin or baste on extra stuff., even ornaments. Target had a great ugly Christmas sweater featuring sumo wrestlers.
Wear the Scottie dog sweater. It will fit in.
