I recently read a story about a male blogger who met with Leandra Medine for a possible joint project. After meeting with Leandra, he then wrote to his female assistant that, despite how smart and funny Leandra was, she was " ugly as fu*k". He accidentally copied Leandra on this. Here is Leandra's post on it :

I was absolutely incensed. And since I don't know who the guy is, I am going to rant to all of you ! There is just so much wrapped up in this one sentence. So much !

I recently also read an article by a young blogger where she states that men she knows say the following :

“I like an all-natural girl who doesn’t wear any makeup, like Kim Kardashian.” '(This is a true story of blissful ignorance, as I have heard multiple guys say it.)' "

This is true. I have heard men say it too. Not just about Kim Kardashian but other women. I have heard this consistently going all the way back to college ( 25 years ). I had a male friend in college who had a lot of girlfriends and lamented that he couldn't find anyone of real value to him. When we discussed what that was, he said it was a "girl" who wasn't caught up in looks and could fall out of canoe during a camping trip and get back in still looking like a Victoria Secret's model. I am not kidding. Ironically, we had been on many camping trips together and he and the other guys ALWAYS complained that my friends brought hair dryers and make up bags and spent too much time in the bathrooms when we could be hiking. The Leandra story and the young blogger stories brought all those memories back.

It also made me think of how warped society is when it comes to "beauty". We have come to believe that someone like Gisele is the "average". She is a genetic freak. I mean that in a nice way...of course. : ) She is model because she is a genetic outlier. But somehow, the rest of us are "ugly as F" because we are NOT outliers or because we don't wear make up. And what the hell does "ugly as F" MEAN ? I am soooooo mad, ladies. : (

Why is being "average" looking, which means the majority, just NOT ok ? Especially when "average" IS pretty and attractive ? Why is natural not ok ? And why do people feel the need to comment on it ????? It is one thing to comment on an outfit or an overall look or specific make up, but to zero in on whether or not someone is " ugly or pretty" as a result of their countenance according to one's standards, is just nuts to me.

With all that said ( thanks for sticking through it so far ), I was also very upset when I recently read an article about the woman that George Clooney is engaged to. The author ( I don't know if it was a woman or a man ) said that she is everything that everyone woman "works so hard to achieve : natural beauty and intelligence" and that she actually achieved it. What ? Knowledge is achievable, critical thinking is achievable...intelligence is genetic. Unadorned beauty like hers is also genetic. The whole freak thing again. And I thought, do people really think that women have a hand in our looks ? Is it my fault that I don't look like Clooney's fiancé ? That is what the article insinuated. That women could look like her if they put in the time and tried harder. Imagine saying that about a MAN ? Just wow.

I feel very cranky right now. : (
