Two Outfits (And a dilemma - leggings as pants)

I just started working as a teacher's aide at an elementary school this Monday. I'm working with first and third graders, and it's a really fun job This is what I wore: http://i46.tinypic.com/348ks55.jpg I like this outfit, but I'm afraid that I look a bit top-heavy.

Tuesday, I decided to try the dreaded leggings-as-pants trend. http://i45.tinypic.com/2nu3gqc.jpg One of my friends, who's much edgier than I fashion wise - multiple piercings and such - really liked it. I felt a little awkward though, as if I wasn't wearing pants, which I wasn't, haha. Don't worry, I didn't wear this to work at the elementary school! Comments/suggestions on my outfits and the leggings as pants trend are greatly appreciated

You look really cute and work-appropriate in the first outfit! I don't think you look top heavy.

I'm not a fan of the leggings-as-pants trend, so I will have to give that outfit a thumbs down. Especially if you are not comfortable wearing it. Love the color of your leggings, though!

First outfit is really cute. Not top heavy at all.

i don't love the second one. Younger gals (teens and early 20's) seem more likely to do the leggings as pants thing, but even they can't get away with it. It looks like they forgot to put on proper bottoms on, like a skirt or pants, and just left in hosiery or long underwear. There is a reason you were uncomfortable with them!

Red leggings are generally frowned upon here since most of us are too old for them (I guess I shouldn't say "us" because I think I could wear them if I wanted to, but I don't). But YOU can wear red leggings and look sweet, so have fun with that while you can!

I also am not a fan of leggings as pants, on anyone, regardless of age. It reminds me too much of yoga attire. Sorry!

I have to echo the other ladies- your first outfit is very cute, but the second one is just not flattering. Skinnies are a much more put together look.

Thanks guys! I suppose that the leggings shall be henceforth designated as a layering piece. I just have to figure out what to wear red leggings with...

You have a beautiful figure Alex but I feel a longer top or dress would be more appropriate with the leggings. The leggings as pants trend is one that many regret from wearing the first time around. It is important to learn from others mistakes as well as our own.

The first outfit really works and is very appropriate for your work.

First outfit is very cute! I agree about the "leggings are not pants" thing. But... if the top was to mid-thigh instead of hips, and more like a tunic than a t-shirt (ie you couldn't see fabric bumps or colours underneath it), I'd think it was cute too. Although still not quite work appropriate. Maybe keep looking for a different black or charcoal grey top to substitute in? Don't give up on the red leggings!

As for the second, well I think you are sorted on the leggings as pants bizzo. But don't give up on hiding the red leggings completely!!! I've got red skinny pants and I've worn them to work a couple of times even. I think the key is black/neutrals everywhere else.

Here's my pics. I can totally see leggings working the same way on you! (making sure the top is long enough for some decent bum coverage!!)

The first outfit is lovely but the second is just wrong! Red leggings as pants! this is a fashion no-no! You can try a tunic or a short dress !

My bf gave me great insight as to WHY leggings don't work as pants; he says they fit so close to the body that it they make him feel like he's looking at naked (albeit strangely-colored) legs and bums -- especially when the back rise ends up getting worked into the crack (yes, eeew, but we have seen it many times). Simply indecent at any age. Trust your instincts.

Rae- lol, that's probably exactly why many girls wear them (to look faux naked-ish, haha).

Angie- Yeah, that's my concentrating face
