Tucking in the wild....

Here are some photos from a well known Australian retailer with examples of tucking and semi tucking.

Obviously the models look great but which of these tucking styles would you sport in your real life?

For me:

1) I like the sweater but would feel a bit of a "hot mess"with this tuck..
2) I could carry off this semi tuck better....but it would not look like this two hours later
3) Yes would wear this- in fact I really like this.
4) No - sweater too bulky for the tuck. I would find this hard to tuck into my jeans.
5) Whilst satin is quite a tricky one I would wear this tucked. I would try this.

I used to wear #2 a lot with mid rise pants and jeans. Other tucking examples don’t work for me. One needs a flat stomach for it and mine is everything but

NICE, Sal. I sport all of the tucks. I do #1 and #2 the most.

I semi-tuck my chunky knits too, actually - otherwise they overwhelm me. I do find it the least comfortable option of the lot, but JCE.

I also find that slippery silk and satin tops tuck better when the bottoms are high rise and tailored on the hips. Otherwise they shift around a lot and un-tuck.

I would most likely tuck like #2. I like the look on others like theses models of sweaters semi-tucked but it is not good on me.

I will semi tuck a sweater if it’s a lightweight knit. More like 1 than 4. (But I have tried 4.) I don’t like the big length difference between the tucked hem and the untucked hem in 1. That seems a bit contrived to me. I prefer 4 from that perspective.
I wouldn’t do 2 because of the lower rise - it tends to emphasise my hips and make me look too rectangular. But I might try it with a higher rise.
The full tuck of the blouses in 3 and 5 looks elegant to me. I do this on occasion and am trying to adjust to doing it more. As I said in Angie’s post, it seems somewhat formal and business like to me. Reminds me of what I used to wear in my early working days. I prefer a more relaxed (untucked) look generally.

All of them, except 4. Such thick knits don't fit into my waistband, I do wonder if people who wear their sweaters that way buy a specific bottom one size up for the purpose...

Irina- I think 2 is in some ways the easiest tuck.....I like how it looks...but I can't get it to stay looking that way on me sadly. On me (and I can only really talk about that) it is more flattering to show the round stomach than to cover it often....

Joy- I can see 2 working well on you... I like this look a lot.

Angie - thanks for chiming in. I agree on a slighter frame that tucking stops chunkier knits from being overwhelming. And yes to the untucking of silky tops.

Brooklyn - I know what you mean. I think fully tucked looks more "proper" in some ways.....I also like untucked tops and I loved Angie's post this morning because I agree about it being hard to find tops that are meant to be worn untucked.

Liesbeth - I would also struggle with 4 - I suspect it could be a look that emphasizes my short waisted, broad shoulders and short neck. I would find it uncomfortable - but it can look great on the model!! I could definitely see you in 2 and 3.

I used to be opposed to tucking.....lower contrast definitely helps if you want to give it a go. It does not have to be the same colour - prints or medium contrast can work so well.

I would wear all of these as shown but I’m nodding on the silky ones needing a high waist to keep secure. I’m definitely a tucker.

I have been known to tuck into my control top pantyhose or spanx or underpants in a pinch. Voila, no slippage. Does not work with chunky sweaters—just sayin’

I really cannot master the semi tuck. 1 & 2 are impossible dreams for me.

I’m with you. I would just look like my shirt half fell out in 1 and 2. I like 3 and 5 but feel insufficiently slim! And 4 looks like the jumper is too thick to tuck.

#4 is the only look I would pass on. This has more to do with my dislike of chunky sweaters than the tucking, however. I see lots of tucking and semi tucking in my city and enjoy wearing the look as well. Interestingly enough, never on anyone under 30. Most women this age seem to be wearing cropped and bodycon tops.

None for me I'm afraid. I hate to full tuck and have never mastered the semi-tuck (can't get it to stay now matter what I do).

I would do 1 with a modification — not so high a waist, with the top sort of pulled out a bit to overlap the belt loop area. Otherwise, like Brooklyn said, it’s too much of a length difference between the tucked and untucked parts, and the super high waist is highlighted, which I will never do. Looks totally awkward on my body type.

2 is what I do a lot. Even with t-shirts. A non-dramatic partial tuck that provides a little shape and eases the horizontal line created by waistband or shirt hem.

No to the rest of them. When I’m thinner, I can maybe get away with a full tuck if the pant rise isn’t too high, but definitely not now. It emphasizes everything about my body that is holding onto extra weight, and current rises only emphasize that further. I can’t even semi-tuck with a lot of them; it just looks silly, like my shirt is tucked under my bra.

I’ll never tuck a chunky sweater because it looks and feels awkward, but I don’t even wear chunky sweaters much anymore.

I struggle with the half tuck (#1 and 2) - I like the look on others, but it feels awkward on me. I like 3 and 5 and have done both (you can use fashion tape to stick a slippery top inside your bottoms)

Hah! I thought I was the ONLY one who couldn't manage a semi tuck! Mostly untucked for me, with the occaisional full tuck.

#3 tucked is for me. I tuck light knits, but not chunky ones.

I do not know how to semi-tuck. Where did everyone learn this? When I do it I look like I forgot to finish tucking my shirt in.
I full tuck or no tuck. I really like the models' hair in #1 and #2.

Haha maybe we need a semi tucking tutorial.

Interesting to see what people do and don’t do - I do think there are so many small variables that make something work on one person and not the next. And to our own foibles - being tall means tops can be a little short which means they come untucked - but if they are long you can have too much fabric to deal with.

I do the #2 tuck frequently. My method is to fully tuck the whole front of the shirt, then pull up and artfully arrange till achieving the look I want. My beltline doesn't necessarily have to show. Photo #1 looks like she stopped in the middle of the process. Or probably what my semi- tuck looks like after using the restroom following one-too-many cocktails with dinner, not a care in the world!!!!

I don't care how big or small you are, it looks silly to tuck a chunky sweater into your waistband.

I think the only time I would do a fully tucked top is if the two items were made of the same fabric, to make a fake jumpsuit or fake dress out of them. Or if a jacket or cardigan were staying on the whole time.

#2 is the main semi-tuck for me - sometimes it is like #1. I have never liked the confining feeling of a full tuck but I do it for a more formal outfit on the rare occasion.

Runcarla and Style Fan - I am the same, I need a tutorial on semi tucking because I just get it wrong, so very wrong. I faff about in front of the mirror and end up just getting changed into a dress!

Well I can see that I am not alone with this. But once I master the semi-tuck then I would have to use the bathroom. I can see why dresses are so appealing.

One of my genuine minor irritations is clothing that changes/moves during the day. Jeans that grow and then need to be constantly pulled up. Tops that come untucked. Socks that move around inside your shoes. Scarves that come untied. And in my case, tops that ride up my back ......leaving my lower back exposed....

I guess it depends on what I’m wearing. Tucking like #2 is my go-to and while I’ve tried the asymmetrical one in #1, it seems like I always want to adjust it.
