I’m a forum hog lately but I’ll quit after this, I promise.

I’ve been on a little bit of a shopping thing lately, probably because fall gets me that way. I’ve had my eye on some pre-loved Dries Van Noten tops for a long time. I adore the prints. I decided to order these two from TRR since they are returnable and the prices were not unreasonable if they worked out.

Pics 1-2 burgundy and bright blue is one of my absolute favorite color combos ever, and the addition of black makes this top easy to style in my wardrobe. However, online I thought the bottom black panel was just a solid straight panel — I didn’t realize it had pleats for more of a peplum vibe. I normally shy away from peplums because short waist + big boobs + peplum = usually not a good proportion on me. However, I think this works better than I expected when I pulled it out of the box. Would style it simply with black bootcuts, wide legs, or trousers as seen here. Not usually a fan of bracelet sleeve length but again I don’t seem to mind it on this top. The fit is good. What does the hive mind think of this peplum style on me?

Pics 3-6 I love this green and would like more green in my wardrobe. The print is gorgeous. However, it’s snug in the hip, story of my life. In pics 5-6 I’ve folded the hem underneath to see how it would look with a bit of length cut off so it hangs better. It’s better but I’m not sure it’s right for me. Part of it is that I’m also not wild about 3/4 sleeves. I’m thinking this one needs to go back.

Opinions?

Pardon lack of makeup or attention to early morning hair. LOL

The colour combination in #1 is fab on you. I would prefer a straight panel as well but I see that you have figured out how to make this top work. The green top is beautiful but if you are not convinced it is better to let it go. Please continue to be a "hog"!

Hmm. I have mixed opinions, but I often do , lol. I don't quite understand the black panel on the first top . From a design perspective, why is it there? And why is it black? (I'm asking all the questions Amy Smilovic from Tibi asks - and this goes to her Rule of 3 concept ) I LOVE the burg/blue color combo on you though. I kind of love the green top because it's such a unique print and a pretty colour for you. I quite like bracelet sleeves myself so that part doesn't bother me. But if it needs altering /shortening and you don't love the sleeves, then I'd pass.

I think IRL the black panel on the bottom of the first top makes a bit more sense -- the back of the top is solid black, and the trim at the neckline and the sleeves is also black.

The green top has so much going for it, but the fit just isn't quite there, and it's quite heavy with no stretch -- it's lined, and it creases quite a bit when I sit. I think even with alterations, which would not be cheap, it is not an easy-to-wear item.

Thanks for all feedback! I'm trying to be super careful with these still-pricey purchases!

I like the first top better than the second, but I’m not sold on the first one either. I think I’d like the black peplum to be burgundy to match a color in the top part, but I do see it matches the sleeve cuffs. Peplums always make me self conscious about my abs though, so even though it looks good in the mirror I’d be obsessing about it and wouldn’t wear it. But it does look good on you, and I like the way you’ve styled it in the picture.

I'm liking the burgundy/blue one better, the peplum portion in black with pleats is an interesting detail that I think disguises its usual widening effect. It actually looks like more of a tucked top from front on.
However, I feel the green one cuts at just the wrong spot on your hips and the wider bracelet sleeve stops right by your hips when your arms are down by your side. Its a lovely colour and unique pattern though.

I love the 1st top on you. I think it will really only work this well with a black bottom (for the same reason Dee said - it blends into the black bottom and is more flattering than most peplums for this reason). Is that too restrictive in terms of getting wears and versatility from a pricey item. I like the 2nd one too but it sounds like you already have reason why it is not 100 percent suitable so better to return. The light green colour is fab for you.

I love the color combo of the first one on you, though my initial reaction was that the peplum was a bit of a style departure for you. I find the juxtaposition of the black with the print to be interesting, but I might tire of it, if it were in my closet. The green one is a fabulous color, but I agree that it needs to go back. Hopefully you'll find something else in that color!

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback! This is helping me think critically rather than having beautiful-print goggles on.

I like the peplum top, but it's not super versatile. Ideally, a top for this cost would be wearable with boyfriend jeans too, and I don't love the proportions when worn that way. It may read a little too dressy for what I want. I don't think I'll like it as much with blue denim either, which is a negative...

The first is great on you. I don’t think the green of the second is your best and the neckline is maybe an inch too low. Now if you could frame and hang that print. . . I would only keep it if it is a super steal and would cost a fortune to return.

I'm glad I looked at the photos before reading the text because I think the first top looks great in every way.

I respect your experienced based opinion about "short waist+big boobs+peplum" but maybe it's about the right peplum, because this actually seems very flattering, almost balancing.

The second top is very much a runner up and rather far behind, not nearly as flattering and the fit seems off everywhere. There are some issues for me with details of the style, but that are so subjective no need to include them.

Both tops are interesting and I love the colours and print of the first one, especially, for you. And I can imagine the green is lovely in person as well -- it doesn't photograph quite as nicely but I think that print is fabulous. Truthfully, though, I suspect you can do better. The green needs alterations and isn't comfortable. The blue/burgundy is a style that isn't particularly workable for you (though it looks good in the pics).

You know what I think? Some of your own photos would make amazing silkscreened prints for your own clothing. I have no idea how you'd go about creating the stuff, but wow. Talk about expressing yourself!

I like the first top , peplum included.Yes, it is true that not every pant(or skirt) shape would work with it but I think it is an interesting top that it would be nice to reach for when you want a quick an easy outfit that is still interesting.
The second top has a nice color but you seem to be having some issues with the shape so I woulp pass it on.

I love the green top, so #2! I think it fits really well, actually. I LIKE the snug fit on the hips. It gives it a "blousson and welted effect" that is attractive, IYKWIM. I like the fiery bit of orange too

Question about #1: is the hem high-low? Or is the top pulling up in front. The palette is SUBLIME on you.

I like them both! The pattern on both are lovely. You look so tall! I think the black peplum on the first is elongating.

Hm. I am with LJP (and others) on the first top. The colors and print are divine on you, but the black peplum really seems to demand that it only be worn with black bottoms, which seems rather limiting for a spendy purchase. Also, the high, round neckline and tailored shoulders give it a ladylike vibe that doesn't seem quite like your style to me.

I actually quite like the second top! There's something easy about the cut and energetic about the print that seems like more of a match for you. But if the fit IRL isn't there, pass.

I ADORE Suz's idea of clothing featuring prints from your photographs! Heck, I'd wear them!

Thanks, everyone! After doing some work stuff and taking a glance at my closet, I'm going to return both of these. I have a few great options for "dress up" tops, all of which I prefer over these. So, there's the easy answer.

I really appreciate all the good advice. These are lovely, but there are details about each one that make them less than perfect. I'll hold out for something that's so good it will make me want to get rid of something old, LOL!

Late to the party, but my vote easily goes for the green top—fabulous print with lots of possibilities for interesting pairings. And I’m with Angie with liking the blouson effect you’d get by just wearing the hemline at the top of your hip so it doesn’t feel too snug.

The blue and burgundy combo is great, but I’m not a fan of the proportions when paired with black bottoms.

Like the colours in one on you but I'm not sold on the black peplum. I had this same design and colour combo in a different top; maybe watch for it in resale. Often when a design is rendered it will be cut for different shaped pieces.
Love the green and pattern but have to agree if you're not comfortable it won't get better.

Although I love the print on the first one, I actually prefer the second on you. Wearing the peplum with black maybe makes your leg too long (apparently there is such a thing ). But if the length and fit of the green don't seem right definitely return -there are many beautiful prints in the world.

I like top 1 but respect your concerns. But don't rule out peplums in the future - they definitely can work!

Not so sure on top 2 - agree with your assessment I think.

I like #1 very much and am a fan of peplum tops but am glad that you have decided to return both if you like other tops in your closet better. Your NAS Z&V blouse sets a very high benchmark.

Rio, thanks! I see what you mean, but the devil is in the details, so I’m going to let both go for now. I have a full closet and need to be really picky about tops that are over $150! The burgundy and blue was under serious consideration, but I really want something more versatile for what it costs.

The burgundy and blue had another ding against it — on closer inspection, there were stains — small but still there — on both sleeves. I’m letting TRR know because the listing didn’t mention that.

I did score a Tibi, new with tags, mint green sweatshirt. No pics yet and it’s certainly not a silk blouse but will get worn for sure! It’s going to be fun to layer with, and it’s easy and casual. Gets a little bit of the green fix I’m seeking to satisfy.

Both are interesting and unique, which makes them so tempting. Actually I feel the sleeves of the burgundy/blue are more problematic than the green one. They look too short for long sleeves, and the green are just solidly 3/4 the way it’s intended.

Now if the green print were on the front of the peplum top, the sleeves were the right length and all other factors perfect, you’d have the top of a lifetime.

I like the first top more, cause the colors are more you, but agreeing that it would definitely need to be paired with black or maaaaybe dark denim for low contrast.
The green is pretty but looks like Summer color season more to me.

Great observations here — I was just revisiting this, after dressing for a memorial today and realizing I do have plenty of good options in this kind of dressier top. I need to stop browsing items that I already have well-stocked! LOL I think I’ve been feeling like I need to take advantage of some of the shifts in color trend, but it’s funny that I found these secondhand so they’re not new and trendy. I did realize I was missing a bit of burgundy, as my ooooold Club Monaco burgundy and black mixed media top from, what, 10 years ago? finally died. I have a burgundy plaid Burberry cotton shirt (also about a decade old) and a Boden long sleeve tee. So the color is the draw here. I need to keep my eye open for other options that are more versatile.

Same kind of principle goes for the green top. My lesson here is to realize what exactly is attracting me to these items and expand my search from there, rather than thinking THAT item is the magical one. I’m learning — hence my realization that neither of those tops are quite right for what I want.
