Urgent: Topper for ball gown - YouLookFab Forum

I’m in a mild panic searching down spanx pantyhose for tomorrow night, and for a topper for the ball gown (pictured).

Should I just wear my regular old black Trina Turk military coat and coat check it immediately? Or spring for this little faux fur number? It’s not my usual color scheme but I think it would look good with red. The black version is sold out in my size. I will have no time to shop tomorrow so whatever I find today is it, or I make do from my closet.

I do have long gloves I can wear with this. I know I have long black ones. I might have long white ones but I don’t know if that would go or not. I’m so not used to this formalwear thing!

What do you think?

ETA: I found a black one and a white one too... I think the white with the red is a little too Mrs Claus for me.

I think the tan one looks a little richer, but the black is more versatile and “me.”

I love the idea of a little faux fur wrap. It would look gorgeous with the dress. I agree the white might not be quite right with red. I know the black is more your style, but my vote is for the first one, the tanish one. Am I right in thinking the first one has a different cut? If so, I like the cut much better as well as the color.

I think the tan is gorgeous; the black is more versatile, but sinks the red colour abit. The white is lovely, but I agree with your view, as it is perhaps too much of a cliche for this time of year.

Not that I am a regular to these types of events, but I do try to avoid taking anything to check into the cloakroom. That said November in London may be milder than where you are.

They are all very nice so it probably should be the one that you feel most comfortable with.I per son ally avoid black nnear my face as it can be draining but you have darker colouring than me so this might not be so much of an issue .My heart says the white!I know mostly everyone else is voting for the tan but the white looks soft and expensive and would look really well with any colour jewellery that you wore or even diamonds ,think Marilyn Monroe!

Hmm, hard for me to tell whether I like the tan without seeing it with the dress. The white would be so lovely if it weren't for the Christmas vibe with the bright red. I like the way it picks up the streak in your hair. Black and red feels a bit... unsubtle? for this occasion.

Oh, this is tough- I wish I could see them with the dress. The tan is pretty as a faux fur but it’s a warm tan to me and not really great with the cool red in my mind’s eye, sort of too natural a color with the satin. . Sorry not much help.

My first idea--before seeing pics--was a fur wrap. I like the tan one best, but maybe the black will end up being complemented by the gloves.

Tough decision, without seeing it on the dress. I agree about black being the most versatile, but the tan one looks richer in depth and texture, while the white one makes your face pop a bit more. I find black and red as prevalent as white and red during the holiday season and wouldn’t let the Mrs Claus factor dissuade you from choosing white, if that’s what you prefer.

Pick up all three, take photos, post? How is it with the dress neckline?
As someone said above, do you need it for warmth once inside? Coat check the coat, wear the wrap?
You will look smashing, whatever your choice.
I think I vote for the white, if you are talking about just for this occasion, without considering future use. I think it looks the most -something- classy? expensive? can't find the word-and I think no one is going to see you in that gown and think Mrs. Claus. Nothing could be further from my mind. Stunning, yes. Santa adjacent, no.

Angie, do you mean the black faux fur shrug here, PLUS a moto jacket? I'm confused. Wouldn't it be one or the other? I'm not sure I can fit a moto (mine all have quite narrow sleeves) over the "sleeves" of that gown -- I would probably have to push them up off my shoulders/arms and have them more up around my neck to fit a fitted sleeved topper over it. Many years ago I wore a very long, loose white coat over it, but that coat has since been given away because it was too large for me, and moths got to it.

Thank you, all, for the feedback! Very evenly divided, quite in line with my own thinking. I got both to bring home and try out in the morning when I get my dress from the cleaners. Jamie was drawn more to the black one upon first glance ("sexier" says he), but agreed that seeing it with the dress will reveal the final answer.

The nervousness I had over wearing this dramatic gown dissipated a bit today (well, besides the worry about busting the zipper!). I was at Nordstrom Rack looking at toppers, and was chatting with a woman who was also shopping for a last-minute item for the ball tomorrow night. She said that she -- and everyone else she has talked to -- is also wearing a long gown. So I don't think I'll be out of place.

Glad you can wear that amazing ball gown! My personal choice would be black. Agree with Jamie... But also have loved red and black for years. Around the time of The Phantom Menace, the kids called me "Darth Mummy" due to as much red and black in the closet as the Sith Lords!

Black cover up and glove are great but the tan wrap is richer (fluid fit and longer length make it more ladylike) and is my personal prefference to this shade of red. Think white gloves can work to it, as the black ones, too, depending on the other accessories or how about quickly dying some white gloves to red? Or wearing black net ones? The ideea would be to ease up a little the black blocks parts of the outfit for wearing the tan wrap, but then you will not wear the cover up all night anyway...so each color for the gloves will work:-). Otherwise, the gown is KILLER gorgeous-a real red carpet one! WOW!

Black faux fur and black long gloves. My wedding gown was red and I wore black faux fur wrap with black long gloves (velvet). I had a velvet wrap for indoors but I doubt you would need that.
