to shrug or not to shrug?

just one question are shrug cardis still "IN"? I went shopping yesterday and picked up a coral coloured one but put it back.i had one last summer but binned it due to living in it and wearing it out. what do you think? in or out?

I hope they are in because I love them and am planning to use them a lot for layering when going in air conditioning!

I would love to see it first. Apologies for presenting an opposing view but shrugs were worn to death here some years back. I thi k it was the early 2000's and unless they have experienced a revamp a d have a modern touch Im afraid I find them very dated looking:(

I tend to think of them as a bit dated (or perhaps not my style) and yet, I still think that in many climates they fill a very serious need. With so many dresses and tops being sleeveless, there are times when you really need some arm coverage! So I would say, let's see what you have in mind and how you want to wear it.

I like them with my fit and flare dresses. They are short enough not to interfere with the line of the dress and they add warmth so I can extend wear into spring and air conditioned buildings.

I like them provided they are not very tiny. I think the shrugs that look early '00s dated are the teeny tiny ones that basically just cover the shoulders and nothing else.

I have a couple that are looser fitting, one of which has dolman sleeves, and I still wear them over sleeveless things in the summer.

Do you remember Ingunn's recent post about her new handknit shrug? It had larger, more voluminous sleeves, and I think something like that still looks great.

I culled mine, but I wouldn't say that they're dated, necessarily. They weren't really enough to keep me warm in arctic A/C so they weren't really serving a practical purpose. (I put 3/4 sleeve cardigans in the same category.) It seems I deal with temperatures in extremes, 110F outside (no shrug needed) and 68-73F inside (shrug not enough, hand me a parka!).

I think they are out BUT I've got a fuzzy black one that I'm hanging on to. I think it still works because it has bishop sleeves - an interesting "architectural" detail.

I have very mixed feelings and would say "it depends". What is often needed is a very short or cropped topper or cardi to fit the proportions of a particular dress, and not necessarily the true shrug style. Also sometimes they lie funny on the body, or can look cheapo. I also do not like the teeny shrunken shrug look on most people.
