Timely K/R: denim skirt

I had to laugh when I saw Angie's post this morning on styling a denim skirt, because last night I was playing with styling a denim skirt I'd picked up from BR. I took some outfit pics, but hadn't had time to post them. So tonight I took a few more, based on Angie's suggestions.

1-2... as I had envisioned it. More "spring casual"
3-5... with various black tops and black boots.
6-7... trying Angie's take, with high shaft ankle boots
8-9 ... also from Angie... denim on denim with pumps. Trying for a bit of animal print mixing with #9.

I have other black sweaters, but one I see working (it semi-tucks well) is packed away for the winter. This one can be worn down or semi tucked, it was just the one I had handy.

So what do you think? I have to admit, I see this more as a spring
piece, so if it only works with bare legs, I'm fine with that. But can I
make it work style wise? I love the length, have actually wanted a longer one (previous ones were pretty short, summer only ones) just not sure about the
A-line thing on me.

These are just a start, if you think some of them work, I can take any of these further with different tops and footwear.

Elizabeth, I think it looks good, esp. in 8&9, which I think is because the tucked blouse and belt gives it a really flattering look. I might try tucking some of the other pieces with it as well!

I am a bit of a spanner, I am not sure. I do like it best in 1 and in 8 and 9....but I am not sure about the proportions. You have great legs so it is not that. I prefer it with bare skin in a spring/summer sense.

Please disregard my voice if I am the only dissenter (I might not know what I am talking about). However, imho, a denim skirt has to be very intentionally styled or it can come across as matronly. I only liked numbers 1 and 9.

I like #s 1, 4, and 9 best. 1 because it looks fresh and pretty, 4 and 9 because I wouldn't have thought to style it like that but I think those renditions work really well. Well done! I hope you enjoy wearing it.

I'm not loving what is happening with the pockets in 2 and 6. I realize this happens a lot with pants, and it doesn't bother me as much then, but I feel like it really interrupts the line of the skirt.

I like #'s 1 and 9 . #1 works because of the shoes - makes the look modern and intentionally up-to-date. I really like #9 for a work look. I'm a little surprised because I'm not a fan of denim skirts - but I do like this one on you. The black sweater and boots combos are ok - but don't seem as interesting as 1 and 9.

I think each one of these looks would look better with a different bottom. I think it is the a-line and snaps that are poisoning my eye. I vote return.

I am on the fence. I like the shape and length on you but am not wild about it with the black knit tops and boots. I think because it is a pale wash it says spring to me and I would prefer to see it with lighter colours and fabrics like in no 1. I like no 9 the best.

I probably should not comment, as I mostly agree with Sterling. Numbers 8 and 9 are the best, IMO.

Vote "Keep". I think the skirt has serious potential. I especially love 1, 8 and 9. I agree with LisaP that those looks are enhanced by your choice of footwear.

Thanks for all this excellent feedback. You've pointed out some excellent things to think about.

I'm still on the fence... I think I'll have to sit on it for a few days, maybe try it with some other tops. I agree with all of you who say it's more springy, I see it that way as well. I also agree it might be a bit of a too light denim to wear with black. I have many lighter weight, non-black tops that could work with it. I also think I'm far more likely to wear it with bare legs than anything else, so I really should be trying it with tops I'd wear in those kind of temps rather than trying to emulate a "look" that I like. Nude hose and the high boots are a possibility, but booties really are a long shot. The season for booties and skirts is VERY short here.

I say be careful with a button front skirt. It looks like there may be some gaping between some of the buttons in one of the pictures. I recently tried a button front skirt, loving the look, but in reality, whatever size I tried, larger or smaller, it gaped when I moved and this was problematic! Make sure you check what happens when you move and sit, etc.

I think brown tones ( tan, cognac, mustard) might be a great alternative to black here as the lighter wash of the skirt would work well.

To me it looks like the fit isn't right across the hips. The pockets and buttons might contribute to that, but I'm not a fan. Tbh I think you can do much better. And I definitely like it better styled with bare legs and light colors. I think the light and flat (?) color is the reason for that. To my eye it just looks seasonally confused with the chunky sweater and boots.

This is something I have noticed on a lot of keep/return posts. Those forum members that like something are very positively reinforcing. Those forum members that have reservations tend not to speak up, possibly because they are afraid of offending or hurting someone's feelings. I felt I "knew" you well enough to provide a genuine comment. I always wonder though if comments are skewed in favor of a "keep" so be wary.

I feel much the same as Sterling, but I also know that denim skirts are a poison eye for me. I was very surprised to actually like #6! Pairing it with black, intentional styling with the half-tuck, bookending with black trendy tall-shaft booties--makes it work.

But ultimately you should keep and wear what makes you feel happy. Some of these outfits (#2 especially) read to me as older and less intentionally fashionable--not UNfashionable, mind, but just something that an older woman who doesn't obsess over fashion might throw on in the morning to get about with her day. And if you're OK with uber-casual MOTG style, there's nothing wrong with those outfits! I definitely overthink things myself oftentimes, going too far in the opposite direction.

I think it's a great choice if you want to go with that retro 70's look. Most of your outfits have a more modern vibe but there's no law against changing things up is there :-)..

I will be a dissenter. I was hesitating b/c there's such a unanimous feeling that it's a good piece. BUT -- to my eye, the pockets stick out on the sides and cause it to sit just a little wonky in the hip area. If it were mine, it would drive me crazy. I would either get rid of it, or try to tack the pockets down if I were really in love with it otherwise.

I like it best in the third and fourth iterations, with the long black cardis, because the pockets are hidden. Notice how in the stock photo the model has her hand in the pocket...there's a reason for that! Probably all the photos with both arms at her sides looked wonky too.

I'm beginning to think I have a wee poison eye for the connotations of denim skirts. These look great if I visually sub in any other fabric but I can't get past the denim matron/practical/religious/"plain" factor. Feel free to disregard!

I would just like to add that I love when these kinds of K/R posts have such varying honest but considerate answers. One reason to adore this forum.
