AllSaints piece - ETA - bought it!

I had the best day yesterday shopping at an upscale mall in our area that I rarely go to! I had a Macy's gift card burning a hole in my pocket, so I bought a dress there that I love! I am planning to post a cruise capsule when I have all of the pieces ready. While at the mall yesterday, I went into the AllSaints store just for fun. I knew that I really couldn't afford anything, but I have been wanting to just look at their clothes up close and personal. Well, I fell in love with this top, and the SA said it could be worn as a dress. The size medium was long enough on me, but would just need some sort of slip underneath. It wasn't until now that I'm looking online, that see that it can also be worn backwards. When I regretfully walked away, the SA pointed out that with the 20% off promotion, it would be just under $100, I was tempted for a hot second. But still... I don't need to spend $100 on one item right now. Then last night my boss took me out for dinner and gave me $100 for my birthday. So... What do you think? Should this be my birthday splurge? If so, what color? I'm torn between the soft blush and the gunmetal grey. The one I tried on was the lighter (sort of medium) grey and that was really pretty too! I don't know for sure what colors they have in stock. I can picture wearing this as a dress or as a top with my faux leather leggings (or lighter weight leggings in hotter weather).

On a side note, does this piece qualify as avant garde? I'm still trying to understand exactly what fits into that category and have been looking to add a little into my wardrobe...

Sarah, I can absolutely picture you in this and think it is a truly versatile piece that would have some longevity in your closet. You'd look fantastic in either grey or the blush (depending on its being a cooler blush tone) but the grey might be a bit easier to work with in terms of keeping a long leg line -- you would wear grey tights or leggings and keep everything quite simple.

I would call this avant-garde, yes. It's not really date-able.

Chiming in - new here so I don't know your style just yet (and I can't see all photos yet...one more day til I'm "active"), but based on what you've posted in your finds I'd say this would fit in great!

Re- splurging or saving: What does your gut tell you? If my mind comes back and back again to a piece after a few days and still get excited looking at it, that's an indicator that it's a worthy addition to my closet. It sounds super versatile.

I'd go with the grey for maximum potential. Hope you'll post a pic if you do decide to go for it - I'd love to see the different ways you mix it up!

I think it looks fun and interesting but I can't quite picture it worn as a dress. It seems like it would expose too much of your lower half. I think it would look great with leggings though. I'll be very interested to see how you style it.

I love this too. Yes, definitely avant-garde. And great to wear as a dress back to front!!! I love the grey here because it's a veryyyyy versatile color....but a light grey or blush would also work great with your hair and light skin tone.

What Suz said! I like it a lot, and I think it would look great on you. You'll need a slip dress to put underneath it, though, if wearing as a dress. Do you have one already? If so, it would be a good thing to try and make sure it works. It will have high longevity, so it would be a good value.

Thanks guys! I have my precious AllSaints bag in my hot little hand! I parked at Bloomingdales and as soon as I walked through the door I happened to be in the AllSaints section. It was really good because the store was so dimly lit that I could see the colors better there. I didn't buy the top there, though, I went to the store because the SA l, Jorge, was so great yesterday! (He was delighted that I came back.) The store is so beautiful - kind of gritty/urban with some warmth. And the dressing room was really cool. I decided to let Jorge and the others (I had the store to myself!) help guide the color choice. They were all young and edgy and I liked hearing their assessment. They also really loved my hair and seemed to truly understand my style. They picked the color I was drawn to but afraid of - it was the medium gunmetal grey that actually reads grey/taupe/green more than grey. The navy and charcaol were both great, but so dark and just so... Normal. The blush actually looked a little too beige and all agreed that a truly pinky blush would have been perfect, but not that. Jorge helped me try it all three ways - front, back, and even as a cardi/shrug. He got me a slip to try it as a dress, and surpirsingly, it worked. I am now under strict orders to wear it as a a dress with nude heels for its debut (He was even giving suggestions for jewelry.) This whole experience was just wonderful. I have been wanting to slowly add better, more one of a kind, items to my wardrobe and this feels like the perfect start!
