Thinking of getting WAY ahead of budget schedule - DVF

With a DVF wrap dress that I promised myself I would buy for my birthday this year. Birthday is mid May, but a week long trip to New Orleans is less than a month away and I could so see myself getting use out of it on the trip!
One problem, I have never tried on DVF in person. My only wrap dresses were Kmart (yes, it's true) and Express.
I am thinking size 4?
Goldenpig or Janet, if you are around - how does this Julian fit? I am high waisted a bit. 34" bust, 26 1/2" waist, 36" hip.

In my experience, her classic dresses like Julian and tops tend to run a size small. I am 2 in most of the contemporary designers, but both of my DVF dresses (one is Julian) as well as wrap tops are size 4. My measurements are almost the same as yours, I am 34-24-36.

I don't own a DVF wrap dress, so take this with a grain of salt.. but the reason why I don't own one is that I am short waisted. I've found every single one that I tried on to be too long in the waist. You can sort of blouse it up a little bit, or just wear it with the waist a little low, but I found that the long waist also means the neckline ends up too low and scandalous.

Tanya, thanks. I don't wear many designers but am a 2 in jackets at Express, for instance. I seem to fall right between xs and s for shirts in places like Gap or Banana Republic.
Diane, the waist thing is certainly an issue. The wrap dresses I did have I had to tie a bit higher, at my waist, to make them flatter and not make me feel, well, wide. he he

I would say they run a bit small too. I generally wear an 8 but I usually am a 10 in DVF. I have wrap dresses in both 8 and 10. I find her sizing wildly inconsistent though (I have pieces ranging from 6-12). If at all possible I would encourage you to try some items in store just to be safe. All that said, DVF dresses are my absolute fav, and I know you will look stunning in yours.

So I should not go by the sizing charts necessarily? I hate that I can't try this kind of thing on first!

Mo, I wear size 2 in Express jackets as well. I am quite long waisted though, and find that the tie hits me in the perfect spot. I could post a photo of me in the Julian dress later tonight if that would help you. Or measure it etc.

I sold one a while ago... it was a size 2 and IMO fit more like a 0.

Maybe you can ask for measurements on this specific style from a few Ebay sellers, even if you are not planning to buy from them?

Mo I think we are similar measurements & I found the DVF sz 4 wrap dress a bit small.

I would say that the sizing charts are not necessarily accurate. I might try going to live help on Net a Porter and give them your measurements and ask which size Julian would fit. Or email Shopbop, they always have great customer service. There is only one Julian on their site right now though and it's listed as "New Julian". Sizing inconsistency makes me crazy!

Another option is to search for "DVF Julian fit" on the Purse Forum. There should be some good info there too.

Oh I have to chime in here at the risk of adding to the confusion...I had always heard that the wraps run really small but I think that depends on your build. I have extremely narrow shoulders (I'm <5ft, 117 lbs and pear-shaped so my hips and bottom are much larger than my shoulders). I did not find DVF wraps to be small. I am usually a 0-2 in tops and a 4 on the bottom, and my wrap is a 2. The 4 was huge in the shoulders for me. There is not a ton of extra fabric to wrap around the bottom, but it's adequate. Also, my dress is a New Jeanne 2 but I also tried the New Julian. I felt that the New Julian was even looser in the top and arms.

So, I would say it really depends on your build and why you fluctuate between sizes.

PS - I love DVF and am wishing for another one for my birthday so I'm on team get your special dress now and wear it in N.O.!

Mo, I don't think I can advise on sizing as I had bad luck with the fit of DVF dresses on me so I never ended up getting one. I tried three different ones and they all got returned. Here are the pics and commentary if you want to see the fit. I can't remember exactly what my measurements were back then, but I think it was 35-31-37? By sizing charts I was between a 4 and a 6, the 4 was slightly snug on the apple belly (would have looked better with Spanx) but my chest was too small to fill out the 6. And I was worried about leg exposure from the wrap style. I have had much better luck with non-DVF faux wrap dresses.

Any chance you can order and try both 2 and 4? The fit is so tricky with these wrap dresses that I would recommend against buying if it's not returnable.

ETA: I see that the website says final sale. I would recommend a trip to Neiman Marcus or Saks or somewhere that carries DVF to try on the different sizes, before you order. If you're spending that much you want to make sure it fits right!

i have one dvf dress, a hand me up. though it "fits", it's really cut low in the front and i have to wear a cami with it all the time. if i pull tighter to cover up, it bunches in the tummy and butt. annoying!

Mo, are you wedded to the Julian? I love the idea of Julian/Jeanne but have tried on a bunch and never been all that happy. They feel fussy and make me look blocky. Then I tried this, which is much easier to wear:

It is more the swirly print and orchid color I like. I told myself I am worth a true DVF by now.

I think I sent you a wrap dress too - can't remember what didn't work for you. I think a wrap dress works on people who are 3D proportionate, Like if your waist size is 30 but you are wide across and thin from the side (like Flat Stanley), not ideal - vs. if you are sort of equally distributed all around. I have no idea what the word is for that, or if I'm nuts.

Una, yes, that dress fit but I sent it on to Shauntelle when her condo caught fire and she needed clothes asap for work (and life).

I get you on the 3D idea - I think I will have to try in person somehow, somewhere.

I agree the dresses tend to run small and a 4 would be my guess for you. You will probably need to wear a camisole, as long as that doesn't bother you. I don't have this exact style, but I do have a DVF wrap dress and have tried on several in the past. My guess is they would be a great cut for your body, as long as you don't mind wearing a camisole, because I think they really only work without on a small bust.
