Then and now- my versions- edit - and one more at end.

Carla posted some older and newer versions of blazers and jeans here - 2015 and 2025 versions.

I thought I would have a play. I have a new long blazer and an older more fitted blazer.

In the first session I paired the blazer with slim jeans and ballet flats. I tried two bags and two different tops. In one I wore a belt.

In the second session I tried both straight jeans and wide leg jeans and two different basic tops. I also tried two bags.

I don’t have loafers so these were the closest I could do although black boots or white sneakers could have both been classic choices.

What do you think? Which outfit would you choose or would you mix and match in a different way? I don’t like the cream jeans outfit - yet I like all the pieces individually. Maybe the denim shirt here would make it more interesting? Or maybe a different bag?

I have lots of other tops I could add in, and silk scarves as well but kept this simple for the sake of the exercise.

They all good actually but my personal preference is 2 & 3. I like a collarless shirt under a blazer. 3 is my best, love it, love the contrast and looks modern. I love the blazer shape, longer but not too volumous. Still has the sleek vibe that I go for mostly.

I like the cream jeans outfit the best. Looks very current. I love the length of the black jacket.

Really different length of blazer aren’t they! The longer one is your new blazer just bought for the event I think.
I personally prefer the shorter blazer, but that is very personal not related to trends. I think maybe with the cream pants it feels like too much “oversized” going on?
I like outfit 2 the best.

I would remix the outfits and wear #1 & 2 blazer with wider bottoms from #3 &4. Longer, relaxed blazer and wider jeans are trendy but to me, they can be worn with more classic items and still look current.

Thanks. I would remix them too - I was trying to recreate the images - fitted blazer and slim jeans, long blazer and wider jeans. And I agree the oversized blazer would be good with the slim jeans.

Lise- I liked three the best. I wore this to a party with a black top instead of stripes and layered necklaces.

Pirouette - I feel this one is almost there but needs a tweak for me to feel happy in it. Maybe a heel, maybe a different top? I will experiment a bit more.

Thanks Jenni - I like 2 as well but I prefer 3. The new blazer is almost a coat. I like having both as I think they are both great toppers for evening events.

Irina - i can see that working. I am gong to try a couple more versions with the cream jeans.

Thanks Angie - maybe a black belt or even the cream belt might help me feel better in the cream jeans one? My hair is a bit darker now - I switch it up a bit. I can’t quite decide how blonde to be!!

Sal, with the cream outfit, by all means try a tan, cream, brown or black belt. Try the striped tee in #3 with the outfit in #4 too. So swap out the solid white for the striped white. You might prefer the boxy cut.

Call me crazy but I like the first outfit! The lower rise slim jeans and belt look fashion forward to me! (I may have overindulged in fashion month.) But I also like the third and fourth outfit. With the third I would try a tuck.

I will experiment a bit with a couple of these. I think they all "work" but I prefer some to others.

Angie - I will try the striped tee or potentially a black top with the cream jeans.

Sharan - 3 is my favourite too. This felt very easy and natural for me.

Jaime - I rarely wear a shirt with a collar under a blazer. I liked this too. My black belt has a silver buckle and felt a bit off with the gold necklace and hardware on the shoes and bag. I could change the shoes and belt and bag - maybe the black belt, with my rust bag, take off the gold necklace and not worry about the gold buckles.

In 2015 I would have worn my silver slip on loafers/sneakers. Or maybe black ankle boots - I no longer own black boots but I do think that would be a good option.

Thanks Sisi. I would not have tried this without the challenge but I liked it too. Quite a timeless look I think. I don't wear collared shirts under blazers so I was surprised that I liked it - I think because the jeans and shirt matched it felt quite simple which was nice.

I have decided I am not trendy with jeans - I am consistent in liking slim leg, wide leg, straight leg and some flares and boyfriends. I am consistent in not choosing skinny, cuffed denim, decorative and embroidered denim and distressed denim. I haven't tried barrel legs but am not tempted as yet although I do like them on others. I like to have three ish pairs in different silhouettes and colours and just wear them. I currently have four pairs which feels perfect. The cream and the light wash get the most wear, but the slim leg and cropped levis still get a few wears a year.

I feel like this experiment shows the difference between an editorial photo and reality....

I went to a party on Saturday night and wore the below along with two bolder gold necklaces. We were both inside and outside so the blazer felt right temperature wise.

I think the cream jeans would work with the more classic blazer and I will try this outfit on tomorrow. I will swap out the white ribbed tank for a different top though - maybe this more silky one.

I like outfit #3 and #4 the most and see a lot of possibilities with remixing jackets/jeans and different tops - all fab options! Great exercise and really nice individual pieces!
Straight jeans are classics that have staying power and wide leg jeans are popular with their easy-comfortable shape ( both are my current favorite ).

All of these combinations are stellar. The first two seem more classic to my eye while the second two outfits seem more fashion forward. Outfit 3 is my favorite, the proportions of the longer jacket with the straight bottoms is really lovely on you. I echo the suggestion of others to try the shorter jacket with the wider leg pants. I've found this combination of short with wide is nice when paired together.

I attended an after hours briefing by the Chief Economist for our bank held after work. I decided this was a chance to try the slim jeans with the long blazer. This time I wore sneakers and a black belt.

I felt very much appropriate for the occasion - there were some stylish dresses worn as well as men in suits- but also branded polos and jeans. That’s kind of how it goes in our city.

Thanks for posting this Carla originally. I am much better at gauging colours and patterns than I am proportions so it has been interesting to take the basic components (Blazer and jeans) and see how tweaking it works or does not work.

The slim jeans, long blazer, sneakers and belt are a perfect outfit for an after hours work setting. I'd wear this combination myself for work settings too. It's casual and chic all in one outfit. You look lovely in this!

I would change the blazers within the picties: Why not try the shorter slimmer blazer with the straight & wide legs, and the Newer longer blazer to the slimmer jeans? Off to read others! (And I find the use of mary janes great here-no need for loafers if you don't have/like them!)

ETA:Ahh, I say the last outfit in the comments is the best of both worlds to me, new longer blazer with the older slimmer jeans a win-win for me! and the flatform sneakers look great here, too!

Ah, Sal! I got it now! Sorry for missunderstanding your post! She (Carla) asked if we can redo those inspiration outfits using our own wardrobe items.... So, you did a great job and after reading the comments it turns out many of us like better the balanced proportions of the newest trends or is it only that our eyes are now trained rather to the current fashion aesthetics(?).

I just saw this but I have to say I love #3 in the original and I really like your last look. Have you tried the light jeans with a lighter shoe? I think that would look good too.

Funny how our view changes with time and getting used to a look.
