In honour of Mainlady's fabulous new happiness factor, her stunning Burberry trench I thought I would post a dressing challenge for those of us who have a trench to wear the trench this week.

I copied Mainlady's style, wearing my trench buttoned back and with a striped t-shirt.

Some fun adventures I have had with my trench, which has been a great travel companion, we have had 13 years together and it is still in great condition - a testament to the quality of Burberry.

Great pictures from international travelling. Good quality trench. It's wonderful when favourite items last long and can be styled in different ways up through the years.

I would have liked to join this challenge if I owned a trenchcoat. But unfortunately, I do not. Well, I have one in silver grey, but in my opinion it's too short to actually be called a coat, I call it a jacket. What I want and am looking for, is a midi trenchcoat that isn't tan or black.

I have had a few midi trenchcoats in my life and still miss them, especially the icy white one I had in the late '80s and early '90s. It was easy to laundry, looked casually glamorous with anything else and was much admired on my travels in Scandinavia, Finland, Poland and Russia. I often wore it with black/white pants or skirts and my big black dangling earrings in Finnish design (wood and steel).

Sure! It's supposed to be colder and rainy for a few days next week. Boo, but perfect trench weather. We only have mild rainy weather so mine is this little copper hooded one.

And not carrying off your happy pink fur, the color is better on you!

But my wine purple coat is looking at it with interest and thinks they could live harmoniously

Well I cannot! I have never ever owned a trench. I have one gearish raincoat which is more like a parka, and 2 really old thin raincoats that were possibly Mum’s ( so over 20 years old) which I keep in the boot ( aka trunk) of my car just in case. Don’t think I would get the use?

I've been dreaming of a trench for a while--can't quite join as I haven't found one that fits my goals. One of my questions is how to style the trench for Spring and Fall weather (as I don't want a winter-weight one), and the other is whether I want it to be just a trench or also a raincoat (which means the fabric needs to be water-resistant or waterproof). So, as I debate these, I'll follow here for inspiration!

Jenni, I can understand that trenches are not for everyone. Maybe one along the lines of Suntiger’s coat would be better for you.

Brooklyn, well you do have your beautiful teal trench.

KM my trench is quite light weight but wind proof. I find that I can wear it on warmer days open and with a t-shirt and not overheat and layer it with knits and a scarf and stay warm in cooler weather.

I’m in! We’ve actually had a longer period of trench weather here in the mid-Atlantic US, and I’m heading to Seattle next week for work, where it will be in the 60s (high teens, C) while I’m there. So, perfect trench weather!

Love your trench coat, great pictures. Hope to get Burberry one day too. For me it will be challenge not to wear trench coat because that is all I wear in our colder than usual spring weather. I just got a new one recently, so now have two Hobbs Saskia.

I'm in! I bought my Burberry Trench as a birthday present to myself when I turned 50. It had been a very difficult year and I needed something to boost myself. That was 14 years ago. My trench still looks like new. I feel like I am on Mission Impossible when I wear it. And at the time I bought it I was!

I love your pics. But can I confess I don't own a trench? Somehow its just not my style. I always love them on others though so maybe it's time..?

Oh I do love a trench! I have... four! Not burberries but 2 class ic dbl breasted to just below knee, a black and a cream plus a black not trench but very modern A line just above knee. That is the one I reach for the most. I lost a navy trench, brushed fleece inside and water repellent. Where oh where did I leave it? I loved that one. Plus a tan single breast that I saw on a blogger and had to have a similar. All in basement save for the favorite modern cut. Must bring up promptly since window for wearing is short in Michigan

And StyleFan, I am totally jealous of your light-toned trench. It looks stunning on you. Best self-gift ever. Is it called stone or khaki, or what? It is fabulous with your hair.

It has been downright hot here the past few days but next week we are supposed to get some rain. I don't own a Burberry but I do own two trenches and will do my best to join in then!

I don’t have a traditional trench but I have a single breasted shorter style. I purchased it on sale for $20 in a consignment store last year. I will share a pic next week!

Hi Bijou I must say Suntiger’s raincoat does really appeal to me ( colour!). I clicked on it but it was sold out. I did see something similar in Karen Walker, but as usual for her very expensive. I will muse on the idea a little

I will try. I bought a BR one late last summer and I’ve never worn it. It’s supposed to be in the 60s and stormy, so could be a good opportunity to bust it out.

Jenni- I don’t think trenches are such a thing here - do you? I think they suit someone who walks to work or public transport commutes with an umbrella. And our rain is too torrential when it comes? I think they might suit Wellington climate in spring and autumn well.

I could see you in a coat like Suntigers too.

I'm with Anchie, this time of year my trench is daily wear unless I make a strong effort to choose something different. I've been wearing it since April, for the last month without the warm lining, and if this weather ever warms up I'll be taking it off sometime in June.

Mine is a classic Colombo style trench coat in taupe, long midi in length. I love that it covers all my skirts and dresses and keeps the rain off my legs. Lately it has felt a bit weird wearing it with cropped pants where the pants hem is below the coat but above the ankle. But not weird enough to opt for a less warm, shorter topper.

I am fascinated by this method of wearing it with the front panels buttoned back. How does it work? Does it have to be a Burberry? (Mine is Sears house brand, stalked for a couple of years.)

I car commute, and walk moderate distances with an umbrella in light rain and wind, so this works well for me. But I had a similar water resistant "all weather coat" in Cape Town, and I would be drenched through all the layers within minutes during the winter rains.

Love this! We have a week of sunshine and temps in the high 70s/low 80s, though, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to wear mine. I’ll try to throw it on if we have a chilly morning.

That is one well traveled trench! And deservedly so. You look fab every time. I have never found a belted trench that works on me and am not sure I live in the right weather zone - when it rains it is cold.

Sal, you may be right. We drive so much in this country! Our public transport is relatively rubbish. Those parts of Auckland that have trains get more commuters not in their cars. My part only has a busway, my son uses that for uni.

Taylor - I just saw your post and you are stunning in your Burberry trenches, no wonder they wanted you to work in store too - you are the perfect advertisement for being casually glamorous in a trench.

Fifthandfinest - my trench is a rather classic style, but the great thing is that trenches come in all shapes, colours and styles. Of course there is no point in buying one if it is not required for your lifestyle.

AndiB - with 4 trenches, you are spoilt for choice in this challenge!

Sal - a trench is a great piece to pick up in a consignment store.

Nemosmum - it will be fun to see you bust out your new BR trench.

L'Aibelle - it will be good to see your trench and how you style it in different ways. The key to the fold back of a Burberry is the fact that they are double breasted and have buttons on both sides of the coat. It may be fun for you to play around with yours to see if you can get the same look.

Jenn - I can see you really rocking a trench. I am looking forward to seeing what colour yours is.

Shevia - a classic trench is one of those things that either works or does not - good on you for recognising that the style is just not for you.

Unfortunately I don’t own a trench coat. When I’m looking for a raincoat I prefer a hood so I don’t have to mess with an umbrella and the belt always feels too bulky for me. These look so great though that I might change my mind!
