What couture details or fashion trends do you wish you could wave your magic wand at and be done with?

For me, it's the EXPOSED ZIPPER! Enough already I say! I tried on the most beautiful white lace dress at Nordstrom. Everything abut it sang to me--until I turned to look at the rear view in the three way mirror. YIKES an ugly black exposed zipper with huge scary brass teeth!

I understand a trend like this in context, but seriously, I've seen enough of it on garments that would look so much better with a neat hidden zip or closure. Do they do this just to save costs?

Actually I'm kind of sick of studs and other embellishments. I kind of like the zipper focus, still.

Karymk I totally agree with you on the exposed back zipper. I've seen it once or twice and thought it worked but I really don't like it when it's heavy and just distracting from the dress or top.

Funny! I don't mind exposed zippers if I love the item. I also like studs and hardware in a limited quantity and as long as they don't look cheap or overdone.

But I am totally with Beth Ann on the skirt and dress length. Why, why, why does everything have to be so darn short? And enough with the cropped pants already. Ugh. Full length, please.

I'm over monster platforms on shoes. To me, they're starting to look dated. Bring on the more refined footwear silhouettes.

I'm okay with exposed zippers on some items, such as a top or skirt here or there that's meant to be sporty, but I agree that they are still showing up on items that I think are meant to be more versatile or refined, and as you say, wham, you see the back view and all of a sudden the dress or skirt isn't "neutral" anymore, or lacks longevity. I think it's part of the fashion plot for our clothing to "expire" after a year or so because of having these details that will date it to the time period.

I love zippers always and forever full stop. I wish high waisted shorts, skirts and pants would go away.

PS, couldn't a seamstress or tailor pretty easily tuck away an exposed zipper?

Yes I agree on the skirt length issue! A couple of seasons ago I complained at Ann Taylor, which is supposed to have a more "mature" market of grown women. Even their business attire was too short. I have noticed hems have dropped back down a bit on the shorter dresses.

Do you get how the midi thing is supposed to work? I just feel it's such an odd length to work with that I'm going to skip that one altogether...

The overkill on studs is getting tiring, I agree!

And Laurinda had such a good point about the camo thing! I never thought about camo in that way before. Maybe that's why I've never owned a piece of camouflage in my life?

I am with Janet and Thistle on the length - both for pants and skirts. Bring on the variety!
As for the exposed zippers it can go both ways for me: I like some and hate others. A lot of them executed really badly and crudely so they just break the look instead adding the edge.
karymk, for the midi you have to find your "sweet spot" of the length. They also require careful top and shoe selection so they are definitely more work than knee length skirts but when done right they are so delish!

Why do they have to include everything in a single item.
Like blouses with embellishments and LOTS of ruffles and wild print...
shoes with zippers, and buckles, and studs, and print or bold color.....

I'm with Tracina. Fussy over embellishment, especially on bags. I just want a simple, handsome bag. Whenever I find one, it costs about $2,000. Whereas the ones I can afford are loaded down with gewgaws. Occasionally I find a decent one at Danier, but not always the right size or with the right kinds of compartments.

I am also tired of ankle pants, short skirts, monster platforms, and all seasonally confused looks.

I love exposed zippers. I don't see many puffy sleeves, but those are my absolute nemesis.

I'm with Suz about the seasonally confused looks, which include:

cowboy boots with sundresses (particularly when worn by older women who really should know better)

all covered up on top with sweater, jacket or whatever, long pants, but wearing flip flops

Cheaply made tshirts - especially for children, that turn into a huge square when washed.

Agree on those zippers. have seen some that just ruin an otherwise cute dress. And definitely the sheer tops. Not good for warm weather when one has to wear a cami,and some still show bra straps, and if it is cooler the sheer sleeves don't add warmth.
also I am just tired of seeing the extreme heel heights. Even though I don't wear them, and don't see too many others wearing them, I am tired of seeing them on the models, etc.
Cheap looking too clingy fabrics even on more expensive tops, and too much spandex in jeans. found a pair with 1% instead of the standard 2%, and they are so much softer, but still have a little stretrch for nice fitting. But hard to find 1% spandex in jeans or other pants.

Personal pet peeve -what is it with expensive designer items no longer having lining? (I'm talking to you DVF galaxy blazer, theory dresses and pants)Blazers, wool dress pants, skirts. If anyone sews could you fill me in. I thought linings helped with drape, maintaining shape, longevity and or course slipping on and off with ease. Does anyone else have issues with this?

PS I am only 5'3" I'm good with short dresses and skirts since I am a tights and tunic girl. But I agree there should be diversity.

In agreement with the short dresses, excessive embellishment, ankle pants, and crappy fabric.

Absolutely in disagreement with the dress + cowboy boots but I know many elegant women who share Ruth's horror.

Not sure I understand what seasonally confused amounts to. It's November 1 and I'm sitting on my screen porch drinking ice coffee. What would not be seasonally confused under these circumstances?

Another person here who would like ankle pants to go away. It's not so much that I hate them, it's that they've crowded out everything else. Sometimes a person wants to buy pants that are long enough to touch floor! Also, enough with the "faux tribal" prints.

I think it's funny you started the post with exposed zippers though; I love those! LOL

Straight cut dresses, skirts and coats. I feel I have a very hard time finding something fit and flare or at least cut slightly wider in the hips. And everything's too short! I'm also not a fan of all the polyester everywhere, I can't stand it on my skin.

ETA

I just thought that it's not right to say I want straight cut clothes to go away - I just want more variation so there's something for all body types out there. Sometimes as a pretty pear I feel very much like a mutant in the changing room.

I'm tiring of horizontal stripes. Yay for a classic breton shirt (fresh!), but enough is enough. Not *every* t-shirt must be striped.

I'm with Astrid. Straight-cut pants are nearly impossible to fit correctly on curvy hips, IME.

I'm tired of ankle pants. Cute, but they have such limited use in my climate. Just give me full-length pants in all the pretty colors that ankle pants are offered in!
