(I'm being tongue in cheek here, btw. But really, it was stupid.)

Inspired by Laurinda, I'm offering up my most stupid and idiotic purchase for 2012, and welcome hearing about yours. You can probably already guess. The fake Roger Vivier leopard booties.

I won't even go back and recap the story on this stupid purchase. I also have no updates at all, because I got one email from cc company that they're investigating but it was just a form email and I am not bothered to be calling them back till after the holidays.

I'm bored with the whole thing at this point. My outrage has burnt out!

Even if I hadn't been ripped off by sleazy counterfeiters in Beijing, I would still consider this a worthy candidate for Stupid Purchase. Why am I buying a shoe in a busy busy mentally insane leopard pattern? And the shoe's proportions are off; they just look too large (and busy) for my feet.

They look like kiddie bedtime slippers.

So let's hear it if you also bought something stupid.

Probably the clutch I bought last week. I would link to a picture but I'm posting from my phone. Don't get me wrong, I love the bag! It's quite large as far as clutches go and the giant bow on the front is so ME. The red will be a useful pop of color in many otherwise drab outfits. It takes home the award because it's impractical. I am a MOTG with a two month old infant- that means the need to carry bottles and diapers. What on earth am I going to do with a clutch?!

Great thread! These sneakers! They are so embellished, so young, just silly. I bought them because I didn't want to wear bulky runners on a trip to Disney, and I did wear them there but I felt a bit weird (although the fashion standards at Disney are crazily low). I think I really fell in love with the colour. If my daughter's feet keep growingm she can inherit them.

I don't know about stupid. But my craziest or wildest or most improbable purchase was my fuchsia silk suit. Technically it wasn't much of a purchase; I think all three pieces together cost me $20. So it's not like I wasted a lot of money. But it didn't prove very wearable. The pants, not at all. The jacket, a couple of times. The top I did wear a lot in the spring so I got my CPW out of it on its own.

To celebrate this wild purchase I plan to wear at least part of this baby on New Year's Eve. Why not?

I'm not totally ashamed of it anyway. It brought me to my cropped fuchsia jacket (I realized how much I enjoy the colour). It reminded me how much I like silk. And it launched me on a deeper exploration of proportion. Pocket money well spent.

At the moment I am tempted to say my STUPIDEST purchase is the dress and jeans I ordered from Nordstrom's for my holiday wear....that STILL haven't arrived. They are lost in limbo. I will probably never get them. I hope at least I will get my money back. Online ordering from the US is truly a risky deal for a Canadian, apart from certain merchants. And as Gaylene has said, Fifty-One is awful.

oh boy, there are a few nominations here. You are not alone Mochi! Can I have more than one since I have been very foolhardy. 3 dresses the same in different fabrics that I never wore, and the attempt to add brown to my wardrobe resulted in adding a red/brown purse that I have never used! Also bought brown Frye combat boots in brown (see above attempt), but I think I can still return those as they are unworn. Here's to no regret shopping in 2013!!!

I bought this top online in the end of summer sales, because I have hardly any woven summer tops for really hot weather. I have only worn it once so far in this Australian summer and thought it looked so frumpy!!
I shall keep it however, because when the hot weather hits staying cool trumps looking good. I can wear it around the house at least.

A skinny pair of cropped pants (well, actually two pairs--one black and one navy) that I thought I'd be able to wear... And that was the problem--because the answer was NEVER!

Horribly unflattering, uncomfortable, and TWO pairs! And, I can't even say they were inexpensive. I'm blaming that picture of Ines de la Fressange walking down the street with her trench coat swinging behind her.

A blue poppy print dress from h&m that looked so pretty on the rack but is just too girly and just plain not that great on. I talked myself into it anyway but why? No idea.
Blue cords from Joe that are baggy on top but cropped with a zipper. I don't have booties. Cords make no sense with sandals/summer wedges. They're just dumb and I don't know what I was thinking. This is one reason I shop cheap, I don't trust my judgment!

Mine were just a collection of cheap eBay purchases that were not quite right and not returnable.
An orchid ruffle tank that I loved the color of, but the fit was terrible and boxy and totally unflattering. Didn't even make the cut as loungewear! $11.
Also, the AA striped 'pillowcase dress' because the quality was so poor it shrank and twisted after the first wash. Lasted as lounge/sleepwear for the summer. $12
A Theory 'cream' belt that actually ended up to be a yellowy tan IRL. Never worn. Off to consignment. $10.
I'm sure there are several more that, added up, could have afforded me one nice, well fitting item. It's a calculated risk I have taken with eBaying, but am deciding on doing it a LOT less this year, if at all.

A Marni dress! The print is gorgeous but the top is all asymmetrical with these ties and ruching and I have no idea if I have it on right - I barely know for sure if I have my arms in the right holes!

Hmm, it's probably a good sign that nothing is springing immediately to mind -- I think I was pretty smart about returning most of my mistakes quickly. Oh! No, wait, I did think of one. A cute pinstripe spring blazer that ended up being not quite boyfriendy enough and not quite fitted enough. I dont know what i was thinking -- must have had the sale goggles on. I bought it at a boutique with a tight return policy and forgot to return within their window of time, so the jacket is hiding in a bag for consignment.

I hate hate hate hate hate ebay when it comes to disputes--this was a few years ago so don't know if it's changed, but they told me that as long as the seller had a working telephone number or email then ebay wasn't going to get involved because technically I had direct access to the seller to "work things out"....I stopped ebay purchases from that time on.

At least I got my fake shoes. I'm really sorry.

A blue beaded peasant skirt with an elastic waist. Ick! Even the description sounds awful. Originally it appealed to my boho side, but the elastic waist with all those gathers makes me look like I've gained about 50 lbs. It's by a designer that I don't really even care for, so I don't know why I was looking at that clothing rack in the first place.

I've been wanting a colorful pencil skirt from J.Crew for years, and I finally bought a purple double-serge no. 2 this spring. It fits exactly, but it's not comfortable at all once I sit down and the cotton wrinkles a lot. My lifestyle is too casual in the first place for pencil skirts, and a non-stretch cotton pencil skirt that only looks good standing up is a closet orphan that I can't quite give up.

Gah, NOW it comes back to me. My stupidest purchases were a black dress and a teal tunic/dress. The black one just looked DUMB on me; I don't know what I was thinking. Actually, I DO know what I was thinking. It looked fantastic on another woman who was trying it on at the time. I wanted to look good in it, so I persuaded myself that I did. It was costly, too, even on sale. I wore it twice, hated myself in it, and promptly sent it off to Mo. I'm so relieved it looks good on her. She got a Killer rating in it, in fact.

And the tunic? Well, I have managed to wear it once so far.

Note: I bought BOTH these items on the same day. What did my horoscope say?

I'll add that I was wearing sale goggles.

Also, I had just come to some sort of so-called epiphany about my new style direction and I think I wanted to go out and fill my closet with clothes that matched my aspirational style. Not that these garments DO, exactly. Which makes it all even weirder. The sale prices convinced me that they were great items for me.

I think I learned my lesson. It wasn't ebay. It was that stupid Etsy seller. Also same thing happened with eShakti. The things that did arrive were terrible quality, stained my washing machine, and I got dinged on customs from India. Never again.

A really beautiful pair of low-heeled dress pumps. They are gorgeous but I have exactly zero need for them.

I can think of two: a pair of Tom's aztec print cross strap wedges that are just too narrow for my feet. I convinced myself that the fabric would stretch, and then it was too late to return them. And a horse print skater dress from ASOS that is adorable, but it's really too young for me. Also waited too long to return that. I think the two items total $100. Could be worse, I guess.

Oh boy, luckily I can't remember all the stupid things I dragged home from the thrift store, although much less than in the past, still too much. But most of that is long gone and I conveniently forget it as soon as it leaves the house.
