So.... I went shopping on Sunday. I had a tight list of well-defined needs, the support of DD, and the professional assistance of Rae, the most amazing stylist ever. Need I say that I didn't find what I was looking for? But Rae found me this top, which I loved with unreasonable intensity. I tried to talk myself out of it because I thought I was over polka dots, and because I didn't need it. Luckily I didn't succeed. I put it into this outfit, and my happiness factor was sky high all day long. I feared it didn't photograph well so I included a close-up. The last photo is how I adapted the outfit for dog walking!

Wow I really understand. First off you look great. This recently happened to me I feel as if I keep repeating myself but it was a red fringe dress and a silk black and grey skirt. I have not worn either in over a decade. The response was so visceral I was so shocked by my reaction and i had to go home and analyze my reaction and response. I have never felt that way about a garment before. Maybe someone can explain that response.

Well, ladyone, I'm going to try just for fun. I know there were years in my life when I had very little idea what I liked. I actually was interested in style, and I read lots of books, but it was all about systems/rules/analysis. It wasn't about responding to something from inside of me. Now I'm gradually learning to listen to the voice inside me that tells me what I love. For instance, I love all shades of yellow-green, which analysis says I can't wear because I am "cool." I'm finally giving in and as I've said here recently, when I wear my chartreuse or apple green, people stop dead in their tracks and say, "That's a great color on you!"

I think a big reason I loved this top is that it looked brownish gray to me and I LOVED that. The people I was with said it was gray, and I kept seeing brown. Then today when I went to the website it said "shiitake"!!! Nobody else has to think brownish-gray, mushroom, is insanely wonderful! Because I do and it makes me happy to wear it. (Nobody else even has to see the brown!)

So I'm going to guess that you haven't been listening to those gut messages for a while, but now you're open to them. And they are sort of shocking in their intensity!

What a cute dotty top! We are Converse dog walking shoe twins. I wore mine today too...same color from Target a year or so ago. Mine will need replacing soon.

Joy, mine are a couple of years old, too! I was so surprised to see that Target still has them. It took me a while to get used to them and I even gave them to DD. Months later she gave them back and now they are indispensable! I even bought some leather ones for when I visit relatives in cold climates! (below)

Adelfa, you look amazing in that top - and the entire outfit. I'm so glad you got it. Your thoughts about colors are so interesting, and I think spot on, too. I've always been fascinated by the in between colors (yellow/green, brownish grey, sand, taupe, purple/blue etc).

I see brownish grey, too -- sort of taupish, actually -- a mushroom colour for sure -- and it's fabulous on you! I love the playfulness of the dots combined with the restraint and sophistication of the neutral. It's a great blend. This is a fantastic outfit altogether -- in both versions!

I love that outfit, and I love the shitake color of that top! But mostly what I love is the role of LOVE. For me, it's the most important ingredient in a purchase, and the ones I regret are always the ones where it wasn't there. Where there is love, ACT.
PS Rae was your stylist??? I am so envious. Really, SO envious.

Yay for Rae! And you look terrific. I love it. The top, the jacket, the jeans, the shoes... And I love the Cons version of it equally, perhaps even a bit more. I hear you about dots -- I've all but eliminated them from my closet, except for a couple of pieces that I love irrationally. I think for me it's a combination of dot size and placement (big or small, random or spaced), color and contrast (an old favorite tonal grey dot tee is getting pilly but defies the Goodwill bag), and the general style of the garment.

As for what I'm loving right now? I'm loving the Rae-enabled Lulu floral bomber that I wore yesterday. My husband hadn't seen me all day, and I when I came in last night, he immediately exclaimed, "Cool jacket! Cool shoes! You look great!"

Great top --- that colour is one of my favourites too. I like both versions of the outfit a lot.

Lovely outfit! The shiitake is a really nice color and I love anything polka dot.

And interesting analysis. I know I sometimes have a hard time separating the voice inside telling me I really love something from the one telling me that I shouldn't pass it up because it would "work" so well.

Both outfits, and all the elements of each, are great. I've neglected the role of love too often. Grew up poor, became a skilled bargain shopper. Recently had the revelation that many of my happy memories about clothes are of BUYING them, not wearing them! I need to change old thinking so I can break old habits.

Suz, I thought of you.... when I wear taupe it's usually footwear, but this darker version seemed right for me!

JG, I grew up poor too. My favorite story, which sounds made up, is that for a while we were getting our clothes from the missionary barrel at church (having recently returned from the mission field). That can definitely mess with your wardrobe mind--it has for me too!

Peri, it seems like there are still times for me when I'm under pressure to fill a wardrobe hole and have to settle for need. But maybe if I follow the love principle more, those times will become fewer!

You seem to have found your own inner stylist --- developing the ability to go shopping with a plan, even enlisting quality help (shout out to Rae)!. I love that, when you didn't find what you planned on purchasing, your were open to what was available --- a little fashion serendipity, yes?

What a lovely top and you are so excused for buying it Thanks for showing options with two different footwear options - I am always amazed by how changing one thing creates totally different vibe of the outfit. That's what having fun with fashion is all about to me.

In addition to lovely photos, your post has another gem which goes straight to my all time favourite expressions coined on YLF "...which I loved with unreasonable intensity..." Perfect timing - I struggled to describe my emotions about the dress I bought two days ago. The dress had sent me into frenzy the moment I saw it and caused a real agony for those several hours while I was contemplating whether to buy it to not. Loved by unreasonable intensity it was!

April and Crutcher, it really is amazing to get to work with Rae, isn't it?

Rae, you have a knack for showing me tops that I love that I wasn't planning to buy. This is the third one since I moved down here. It's probably a good thing as I hate to buy tops and tend to solve the problem by buying identically cut tees in various colors (such as black and gray....)

Beth Ann, being able to trust your instincts is wonderful in fashion and in life. Maybe trusting them in fashion is paving the way to other things for me!

Rachy, let's talk about the office-to-dog-walking thing! We can post our ideas! I do it every work night, so maybe I'll come up with something! (Of course Baby thinks that WIWs are quite the intrusion on our evening routine, but sometimes I'm trying to use the last of the light!) Also Rachy, do you think there's an LA palette? I know that I'm aiming for more tonal looks. Not all the way tonal, but more blendy than before, and lighter. Browner maybe.

Pil, Baby is doing beautifully! He gets four walks a day:
1. first thing in the morning
2. with his dog walker
3. when I come home
4. bedtime
He loves this regimen! Hooray for apartment living! He also gets to see his sissy and bubba a lot (DD and SIL) and he adores them!

And Pil, so glad to hear you're loving your BF jeans! How great is it to be comfy and fashionable all at once!
