The Perfect Striped Tee

I have been through so many striped shirts over the past year, I can't even. And I still haven't found "the one" for me.

I want something that...
- is made of high quality cotton or linen
- has 3/4 or long sleeves
- comes in tall sizes or will fit a long torso
- has black, charcoal, or dark navy stripes with a non-optic white or ivory
- has a scoop or v-neck, NOT a boatneck or high crew

Any suggestions?

You mean a t-shirt, right, a tee, not a woven shirt?

In my head there's a Venn diagram of brands that do tall sizes in tops and brands that have consistently high quality tees, and there isn't a ton of overlap between the circles. Sometimes you have to keep an eye out and get lucky, especially with prints and stripes that aren't always as often kept in stock as solids.

Boden has recently started offering a long length in some of their top styles. Have you tried their long length Breton?

Yup, Laura, a tee. I edited the title for clarity.

For some reason, I had it in my head that all of Boden's Breton tees were boat- or crewneck, but I see one that looks like more of a scoop. That might be worth a shot.

Splendid? I don't have one in mind but I think their tees are high quality cotton and long in the torso.

Jenn, I have the Boden one you linked to, from last year. I am a person who generally looks better in a slight scoop or v neck, but this top works for me. It's not a heavy Breton knit so it does not always lie perfectly flat across the front.

I think this is where my pickiness comes in.

Garnet Hill's available colors don't work for me.
Petit Bateau only goes up to L and tends to run small.
EF colors don't work for me.
LL Bean colors don't work for me, and I suspect it would be too short.
Splendid might be worth a shot, but the white might be too white.

The Boden one is definitely on my to-try list! Thank you for the photo, UmmLila! Does that gapping under a topper bother you?

I like the shirt and wear it often, but do find myself adjusting it. If that would bug you, then I might not recommend the shirt. However if you, ahem, fill it out more in the front than I do, you might not have that issue at all.

Consider sizing up in the Boden breton--I'm a small-busted 0/2 on top and their size 2 tee was a bit snug all around on me.

The Everlane ones are cute, but their size L is an 8-10. That's not going to work for me. I did just pick up a (possibly) temporary solution at Target. I can't get Finds to work on their site anymore, but it's a V-neck in ivory and black.

Yeah, Everlane lies, IME. Their L is way bigger than they say. Some of my stuff from them is a L and some is an XL and it all fits me, and I'm a 14/16.

Although they continue to tick me off with having less and less XLs available, so I totally understand if you want to avoid them.

I have a Boden Breton in navy with a scoop neck. I have a size six and fits TTS I think. It has long sleeves.

I have been searching for the same type of top, but don't need the length. The Boden long-sleeved Breton top (regular size; I didn't try the long version) had more of a boatneck and does NOT lay flat on me, which drives me crazy so I never wear it. I recently tried the J Crew striped boatneck tee shirt. That one did lay flat in the front, but it's boxy and on the short side.

I have a Boden Hamptons tee that I absolutely love that seems to fit your description - scoop neck and long, but I'm not sure if they make this style anymore. I just looked up my email receipt and I bought it in 2012.

That's interesting about the Everlane sizes, Laura! I'm usually a 14/16 on top and 16/18 on bottom, and I never even thought to try them, given their size charts.

RoseandJoan, I will investigate the Baukjen. I've never heard of them before, but (aside from the colored collar) that first one looks about perfect.

Banoffi - "Vanilla" and navy with a scoop neck sounds just like what I'm looking for. I don't see it on the Boden site right now, but I'll keep watching.

There is a Land's End rash guard that is very popular with customers. MsMary has one and wears it like a regular T. I want to get it (being a huge mariner T fan - 5 is not enough) but the US to Canada exchange is awful. Not cotton, maybe too optic white? Comes in tall, etc.

Uniqlo is worth checking out too, as they usually have nice quality tees. I currently only see this striped boat neck tee on the website (and I know you don't want a boat neck), but new stock comes in regularly, so it's worth keeping an eye on them.

Runcarla - The rashguard would be a rash-maker on me if I tried to layer it, but I see LE also has a very similar cotton version. It's still crewneck, but might be worth a shot if I'm ordering something else from them. Thanks.

Inge - I'm fascinated by Uniqlo. I have this suspicion that their sizing might be all wrong for my body, but we're getting a store in Denver soon, so I will keep a hopeful eye out.

There are a million and a half Breton tees out there. You'd think it wouldn't be so hard to find the one that's just right. And yet.

uniqlo and everlane both provide garment measurements on their websites. if you have a shirt whose fit you really like, take the measurements and compare to the chart.

Gudrun Sjoden makes a great striped shirt, though the colors change from season to season and I'm not sure they have a navy or black option right now.

I have several Boden Bretons and find them a little too lightweight for my taste. Best as a layer, not a standalone. I think they do make a heavier weight one too but I haven't tried it.

I have the LE rash guard. I bought it for our trip to Hawaii. It was nice for snorkeling, but I wouldn't want to wear it away from the beach, because it's all nylon. I also have several LE striped cotton tops. I think they have boatnecks, though. I bought one, liked it, and then they went on sale for $10 so I bought three more, in both off white and navy. They have a nice substantial fabric. I also have an Armorlux top that I bought at the thrift store. I think someone was confused by their sizing and donated it without ever wearing it. The size three was perfect for me! Anyway, it is substantial and very soft.

I also wanted to suggest Armor-Lux. I love mine! Together with Saint James probably the best bet if you want a classic Breton shirt. And bonus points for them being truly made in Brittany! They don't have as many colours available right now, but that might change. I know there were tons of colour combinations available on the website in the summer sale last year. Although the classic cut has a fairly high neckline.

Jenn, I have two of that LE tee; I really wish I had sized down, maybe to a M from the XLs I have. In contrast, that rashguard in a L is a second skin, like a rashguard shud be.
