Thistle's poncho/blanket thread got me thinking (and laughing) about how we all generally dress for our own pleasure - and how although there is a tendency to dress in conventionally flattering items and silhouettes, we also experiment (or even embrace!) less conventionally flattering, but perhaps more fashion forward items. And yet.....if a significant person in our lives articulates an adverse opinion about a garment or look, it can be the kiss of death for said garment!
For example a co-worker once showed up with a new vest that she really liked. Another co-worker volunteered that it made her look like a Walmart greeter. I think she wore the vest 1 or 2 times after, and then it just disappeared.
My DH took a strong dislike to a top with zipper detail at the back. Although it was a cool style detail, and he could never articulate why he had a poison eye for the look, I couldn't shake his opinion of the garment. I wore it on days when he was away on business, and donated it when it showed early signs of wear. Some of the enjoyment was lost, however, since I remembered his original response at each wearing.
Have you ever thought something was so fab, only to have a strongly voiced opinion (or thoughtless comment) sour your opinion?
