My Jeans Hunt Update

I was ranting about denim fabric being too soft, thin and stretchy as I replenish my own denim capsule this year. Unlike ALL my clients, I like classic, hard, thick denim sans stretch with a low front rise (6 to 7 inches), tapered leg, full length with scrunch, and not skin-tight.

Here is the shopping update:

Madewell, Gap, Banana Republic, Club Monaco - all too soft and high rise

Nordstrom - too soft and high rise no matter how premium I go.

Barneys - even tried the mens dept. Found the right fabric - ACNE and A.P.C - but the rises were again too high.

Shopbop - ordered 6 styles. All too soft and the rise too high. Lengths too short.

Levis - fabric was better, but again the rises too high.

J.Crew - fits are a 9 not a 10. A little soft but not too bad.

H&M - perfect fabric and length! NO stretch!!! But rise was too low and slouchy. Not what I am looking for.

Have the True Religion Camerons on order, and 5 Euro styles from yoox.com on order all with very low rises (including Diesel).

Managed to find my replacement white jeans in a nano second from Bloomies. They are AG and the link is below. Tailored skinnies. Not too soft and stretchy. Rise is borderline okay at 7.25 inches.

Am not frustrated at all. Just finding the hunt interesting. I have all the patience in the world to find what I want.

How interesting that all the rises are too high, not that long ago it was the other way around I run into that quite often as well. I've been curious about AG's sizing for a while, they're one of the premium brands I'd be interested in trying. My white Kut's from last season are suuuuper bagged out (Suz had the same issue I think?) even though I know yours didn't.

Mirp, I wear lots of trousers so my denim hunt is not urgent. I swim against the tide with what I want so I have to be extra patient.

That's true, Aida! My white KUTS from last year do not bag out at all. Not AT ALL. Weird. AG's sizing runs TTS. I didn't mind the more conventional denim fit and softer fabric for my white jeans. The fabric is thick, the length ample, and rise okay. I don't know anyone who likes to wear as low a rise at me at this point. Do you?

I'm on Team Low Rise actually! No idea what the actual measurement I like is, though. Rae usually wears a fairly low rise measurement right? I think in addition to the Kuts bagging, I have also lost a size since I bought them early last year. They are TRULY slouchy on me, I can probably pull them right off my hips (which is saying something). So I would like to replace them with something slimmer, and certainly lower rise, and possibly will dye the KUT pair another color that I'd actually enjoy in the slouchy fit.

I am so glad the rises are finally higher. Jeans are fitting me again but I wish there was more of a variety for all of us.

Wow Angie! You are impressively determined. The only jeans I can think of that may fit the bill are Helmut jeans. I have a pair of his skinnies and they are 98% cotton, 2% elastin and they are the stiffest jeans I have, and pretty low rise. I actually kind of hated them at first because they were so stiff, but now they are kind of growing on me.

What about the AT citron jeans that you recommended in another post? I see they are 2% spandex - do you feel they may bag after wearing or will the thickness of the material help with that? Or can you not tell until you wear them for awhile?

and yes, the high rises are so disturbing. That is actually the worst thing that can happen to my love handles

Wow, 6-7 inches is definitely a very low rise! I like 7" as a sweet spot, and I'm also on Team Low Rise.

Ah, Zap! I still have to get to AE after they restocked for Spring a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for reminding me. A few weeks ago - all options were too short, and too distressed. Rises and fabric options on some styles were passable. High fiving you on preferring low rises too. How low do you like your rise?

Raisin, Helmuts jeans now are still too high rise for my needs. Have you seen current styles that are lower rise?

KL, high five on liking low rises. I find them extremely comfortable. Higher rises dig into me when I walk and sit.

Angie, the current pair of Helmut jeans I have seem to be very low rise. I just measured them, they have a 8" rise. That's low to me anyway. Hope that helps!

Angie, is there anywhere that sells Mavi jeans in Seattle? I have a pair of dark denim skinnies that I got last year, that I think fit all your criteria. They don't stretch at all, the denim is heavy (and durable -- it's got quite a lot of poly in it), and the rise is very low. I think I like the rise as low as you do! Also, they are not clingy, because of the heavy, non-stretchy fabric. They are not exactly slouchy, but they skim rather than cling to my legs.

The rises seem to be in the 7" range, depending on your size. I like that the site gives the exact measurements for every size.

You are so patient...thanks for sharing the story.
I'm starting to wonder if I'm Team Low-Rise and didn't realize it. Angie, it was your comment about digging in when you walk and sit that made me wonder. I tend to get a lot of puckering and folding and digging on my jeans and pants. Maybe all this time the rises have been too high?

Ah, Raisin. 8 inches is not low to me :). That's mid rise! I like 6 to 7 inch rises for jeans. Thanks for the link to the CE jeans. They look legging -esque, and will be soft and stretchy, don't you think? I appreciate the effort though. You sweet thing!

Rae, Aha. You like low rises like I do. I did not know that.

Elisabeth, go measure the front rise on those Mavis if you don't mind. I bet they are above 7 inches. They sell Mavi here at Nordies and Macys. Have not liked their rise lengths and fabrics for myself - although some of my clients are very happy with their Mavis.

Atlantia, lots of things about fit could be making those folds and digs. One of them could be the length of the rise.

Angie, have you tried Dsquared2? I tried on a few pairs this fall and they were verging on scandalous on me. Pretty sure they were in the 6-7" rise range. And I believe 100% cotton. Really outside my comfort zone but definitely cool. Though fairly pricey for a pair of jeans.

I'm firmly team mid-rise. I have a super long torso and am so relieved I can find jeans that hit the right spot for me. Though realistically they look more like low rise on me due to my weird proportions. I've barely recovered from the jeans situation circa 5 years ago.
