Tell me the story of your profile picture...

I make no apologies for being nosey;-)

How did you decide upon your profile picture? Did you try a few before deciding 'this is the one'? Have you chosen to conceal or reveal your identity through your profile pic?

I am asking this because a) I have a new camera and I'm trying out all of the settings with really dodgy self portrait shots which are hastily deleted and b) I have been trying to find a new profile pic since having my hair cut short.

I picked the picture I did because most of my friends say it is their favourite. It was taken at my boyfriend's place right after my hair was cut short. So, two new short haired chics. He has this gorgeous fountain out back and he snapped the picture of me the afternoon after the second cut. The first cut was a pixie that only lasted a week. I found it so messy looking. He actually took me to his barber for the cut you see in my profile picture.

Anyway, he startled me when he took the picture, and I ended up falling into the fountain. Picture Puss-in-Boots from Shrek after the shipwreck scene.

So, I guess the picture best says, "Julie"

My latest profile pic (yes a dodgy self portrait) was uploaded because I was amused by how stereotypically alien my head looks and the random grey hair which just appeared!

I look far from my best but it's me.

When profile pictures were added to YLF, I just went to my Facebook albums and picked the most recent one of me that showed my face.
It's actually a photo that Bryan and I had taken of us on the ferry on the way over to Seattle when I got to meet Angie!

What a timely post! Until a couple of days ago my profile picture was of my 2 dogs. Then I ran across a very old picture of myself at about age 3. I chose it because it shows that even at an early age I was concerned with fashion and how I dressed.

What a fun post! I use a photo of myself that was taken on a pony back in the 1950's. Back then, photographers would come around the neighborhoods with ponies and take photos for a fee. You can't tell from my profile pic but there are tears in my eyes. I was trying very, very hard to be a brave girl.

I also considered using baby photo #2 for my profile picture, but thought it was too light to show up properly. It was the last in a series of baby pictures taken, and as you can see by my frown, I had had enough of the photo session. My mom hated this photo at the time, but it is my very favorite of all my baby pictures. Photo #3 is a happier shot from a later session. I think my mom had them redo my photos due to the previous shot.

I'm showing my age here. I bet these could be classified as vintage photography!.

Mine is a crop from a photo I took a long time ago of a monarch butterfly in a field of lupines. I've used it as a profile picture in various other online places, and I instinctively recognize it as "mine" when I'm scanning the forum and such. I chose it because (a) I like the colors (and I would totally wear this color combo), and (b) at the time, I was really pleased with myself for managing to take this photo with my little dinky point and shoot camera.

I'm a professor, and I don't want to risk having students finding me on this site. So, I posted a photo I took of heirloom tomatoes that we grew last summer. I love to garden, and gardening and cooking are a huge part of my life, so I thought I'd share something about myself besides my face on my profile pic. Plus, I just liked the pic.

I changed mine once I read the thread about our stuff coming up on google searches. I'm not that big on internet privacy but I do want at least to have someting in common with a group before they 'see' me. So I changed it to a movie poster for Never On Sunday starring the actress I was named after - Melina Mercouri.

My photo is of a cactus that I walk by every day. I love how cacti look when they bloom, and I think this one is my favorite.

Fun thread! I adore Maira Kalman's work as an artist, illustrator, and humorist, so I found a picture she had done with a nice woman's face (and a cute pooch that reminds me of my own pup), and cropped it.

Great question! My profile picture is the view looking down from Castle Schoenburg to the church in Oberwesel, Germany. My husband was playing trombone with the local band when we lived in Heidelberg (1988-2000) so the entire 75-person band AND their families got to stay in this ancient castle-hotel overlooking the Rhine. It was like a fairy tale! Because we had a young child, we had a tower room! It was beyond gorgeous - both the castle and the glorious village below. For a whole week!

I first took the name firefly on another forum; for my profile pic I did a google images search and found a picture that I liked. When I joined YLF I kept the same username and profile pic.

I've never really analysed why I like the picture, but thinking about it the intense colours, clean lines and strong, simple overall look appeal to me. Coincidentally or not, my style tastes seem to run that way too, certainly at the moment. And as someone else has said, it's easy to scroll down and find my threads and postings.

There are formal gardens near us, and the hubs took this picture of me a year or two ago. I like that there's a little anonymity to it. I rarely have the guts to pull it off, but I love classic glamorous looks, and hats are a piece of that for me.

My profile picture was taken in Hawai'i two years ago, and I am happy, tan and relaxed. I do not feel photogenic, but I like this picture and feel it reflects the true me.

I hope to have a replacement photo taken in Hawai'i soon... we leave next week!

Mine was taken on our anniversary a couple of years ago. My husband and I usually aren't happy with posed pictures of ourselves, so we goofed on in the mirror before going out to dinner. I picked it because a)my hair looks good b)I like the dress c)I look happy! I also kind of like the off-kilter angle.

Mine was taken by Elle at the London YLF meet last August. I'm not very photogenic but Elle captured me laughing and relaxed, this has got to be one of my favourite photos of me x

My photo was taken at my son's kindergarten graduation two years ago. I was so proud, even if it was just kindergarten! LOL!

My photo was taken a few months ago when I was visiting puppy girl Regan before she was old enough to come live with us. It's the most flattering, recent photo of my face that I have so I used it. Also, it includes a dog which any photo of me ought to.

Mine was taken last year at my birthday dinner -- just a snapshot my husband took with his iPhone, but I like the memory, I'm wearing one of my favorite dresses, and it's a good pic of me.

I had a picture of my face that I took in the mirror, but I wasn't comfortable with having my face as profile picture so I changed it into a photograph of forget-me-nots that I took in the garden last week.

I try to keep quite private online - as few photos of me as possible floating around the internet! So, as a size 14 redhead, I picked a photo of the TV character Joan Holloway who is curvy and redheaded (not natural, but who cares?!) and FIERCE. : )

My "story" is not very intriguing: I don't show my face in my photos, so I wanted something distinctive that wasn't a picture of me. Also, I wanted something that was still recognizable when shrunken to thumbnail size.

Very interesting answers! When I went to choose a profile pic for YLF, I realized that I rarely had my picture taken alone. I did find this one shot of me from a trip to NYC in 2009. It was during a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. I also wasn't sure how much I was willing to reveal of my identity on this site so this seemed like a good half-hidden face look!
