My DDs (aged 17, 22 and 24) mostly wear skinny jeans and tops, but my youngest DD doesn't think jeans are comfortable, and during the summer months she likes the jogging pants that are popular,

DDs are 14 and 17 and they wear Hollister skinny jeans almost exclusively. Light wash, dark wash, distressed. My older daughter wears baby boot cuts on occasion--also Hollister. The only other thing they wear are Nike Capri tights but mostly only when at home.

11 year old daughter wears skinny jeans quite a bit. But this year she is also really liking athletic leggings with long pullover athletic top (must have thumb-holes!). Skirts and dresses once in a while. I'm enjoying seeing her experiment a bit with clothes. She's been doing some creative layering and wearing scarves a lot (which I just can't do!).

Our son used to wear jeans to school because everyone did. He still has one pair of extremely worn-in jeans and I have no idea whether he'll want to wear them this winter, for social activities. They're a lot softer than the one pair of khakis he has, so maybe. If we can find him some much softer khaki - type pants, then maybe not.

My DD is almost 16. She has always had a "tomboy" style. I sometimes hope that one day, forum member Elly will be her style mentor!

She wears jeans almost every day -- mostly Gap or Old Navy BF jeans, but she tends to wear them more like slouchy skinnies. Not super baggy. At home she wears sweat pants in winter, but she rarely if ever would wear those out of the house. In summer, she wears BF shorts. She doesn't care for leggings.

For tops, she wears plaid button front shirts, graphic tees with feminine drape, or loose cut boys' tees with fun patterns (from places like Out of Print). She also owns a few "dressy" blouses, which she wears with black trousers and a black jacket for a "le smoking" effect. In winter, she has some fun pullovers, some with graphic designs and some plain. She also wears a Roots hoodie and a vegan leather jacket. And of course a parka in winter!

Her footwear? Blundstone chisel toes which bookend her black hair. In summer she likes a pair of red Ecco sandals.

I wouldn't call her fashionable by any means. But I do think she dresses for herself and doesn't slavishly do what the other girls are doing.

Perfect example . Taken on the weekend .

My DS is ten. He wears school uniform five days a week. On the weekend in winter, he wears jeans more than track pants, mainly because I tell him track pants are for camping and home, and if he goes out he should wear jeans (like Dad!). He has one or two pairs of cargo pants he likes too.
In summer, or indeed most of the year here in Brisbane, it is shorts all the way. Denim shorts, cotton shorts and some surf shorts.

He wears t shirts almost all of the time, cotton shirts are really only for going out!

My guys are young, 4 and 6, but they have very strong preferences in clothing. They wear athletic shorts with science graphic tees most of the year, but have some thermal weave shirts, fleece pants and a few pairs of soft khakis for winter. And they love their hoodies with the fuzzy lining. They complain that jeans hurt. They are active all day, so these clothes suit their lifestyle, but I keep a few polo shirts and woven shirts to pair with the khakis for nicer occasions.

My boys are total normcore with jeans and black/grey/navy tees and shoes the same :-S Mardi used to have gorgeous colours, cute dresses and sandals; mega killer heels etc... One of her signature sayings was "I know I just went to buy some milk but I couldn't resist...." (fill in another cute dress; sometimes something with fur in winter!!!)

Older DS is 15. He wears jeans, plain or minimal graphics tees and plaid shirts or hoodies. He bought his first pair of Clarks Desert Boots this fall is enjoying alternating wears with his black trainers. He doesn't care for tees with logos or advertising of any kind unless he has a personal connection to it like a tournament tee from a hockey tournament he played in.

Younger DS is 13. He would wear silky track pants and dry fit tees all day every day if I let him. Because I have a rule that sweat pants are for exercise only he begrudgingly wears jeans, dry fit tees and hoodies to school and changes as soon as he gets home.

My 3.5 yr-old daughter wears cotton tees and leggings and has just begun choosing her own outfits from about 10 tops/bottoms. She tends to prefer a lot of navy blue and often pairs a navy blue top and leggings. The sleeves always need to be long because she sniffs her sleeve on one side and sucks her thumb on the other. She's been showing more interest in dresses with tights lately (she has a few cotton jersey stripey dresses from Old Navy) but generally wears pants for action and adventure, playground structure climbing, etc.

My daughters wear school uniform. DD12 and DD7 are quite appearance conscious; DD9 rather the reverse.
They love track pants and hoodies for home wear/ camping etc.

For going out of the house it is mostly jeans - strictly skinnies for DD12. She likes to wear them with flowy tops and ballet flats

They also like leggings and DD7 particularly likes the shorts over leggings combo (partly probably because I don't let her out without decent coverage)

It is a struggle to get them to wear dresses or skirts (and they have many gorgeous dresses, because people love to give girls pretty things!) though when it is hot sundresses will come out.

Sons in early 20's. Eldest likes a light weight chino, but also has a pair of raw denim jeans, and a pair of older black waxed jeans that used to be in heavy rotation and are now showing wear. Anything with a long enough inseam (38 inches) wins the day. T shirts under suit jacket, and in colder weather sweaters. Likes a euro look and refined shoes.

Youngest wears more jeans (AE) but also lightweight flannels. Likes plaid button downs and vests. Is more likely to wear Asian influenced bottoms (tai fisherman pants, etc.) and a t-shirt as lounge wear. Likes flip flops or stompy shoes and boots. His style is hipster/preppy cross.

Both do sports and have extensive collections of workout wear - but the gear doesn't cross over.

My son nearly 12, wears jeans or cargos and a tee with a hoodie over.

DD is an old lady now, hehe, but the kids around me... The kindergarten set is all leggings with dresses. The boys... Och, it's horrible... Their parents dress them like turn of the century paper boys (Hipsterville remember). Older set is all skinnies, tanks, shorts... A lot of the guys wear woven work pants baggy but with the waist where it should be. Not too many pants on the floor types these days. More fashionable types are still doing New Drab (skater stuff).

Oh and hoodies galore...

My kids have been wearing jeans everyday on our trip. I have thrift end them quite a few pairs and dd1 chose straight legs quite fitted, and dd2 went for baggy flares. With her ski cap. At home they wear skirts with leggings to school but I discourage leggings as pants and encourage jeans other times. They still listen to me - somewhat. DS is wearing gap jeans, he only cares about comfort.

DD is 12 and a super sporty tomboy. She wears Roots sweatpants most days, athletic leggings are "dressing up" and skinny jeans are for super fancy. Hates skirts and dresses, wears skirts only to synagogue (non negotiable) but she'll pair it with a plaid flannel shirt. She will not wear anything with sparkle, or embellishment of any type.

She is not typical though at all! She does not care at all about labels or name brands or what everyone else is wearing.

I struggle to get my Master 12 into jeans. So I buy him joggers / track pants that look like jeans but are soft and comfy. He also likes ones with a subtle drop crotch. For summer he likes white tshirts and a black vest (waistcoat) and drop crotch shorts similar to the photo below.

He is very particular:)

7 year old like skinny jeans, skinny cords, leggings, and sparkly shirts and horses. She likes scarves and accessories. My 9 year old like regular pants, not leggings or jeans).

There are four girls at our house: 20, 18, 17, 16. Two are in university, two are in high school.

This time of year they wear skinny denim and lululemon leggings almost exclusively, paired with boots and booties of all kinds, with the occasional pair of Docs or Cons or moto boots to mix things up. They favour oversized cardigans, vests and moto jackets with the requisite infinity scarf. When they're with their friends, they all look like this!

My most fashion-forward daughter has also been experimenting with athleisure, wearing sporty soft pants, sneakers, etc. a couple of times a week.

Grandson school uniform us a school shirt and dark jeans. On the weekend it's shorts or jeans.

My 16 yr old DD wears as follows:

Bottoms:

  • skinny jeans in various washes from a variety of stores
  • lululemon tights and flares
  • Roots sweatpants
  • Adidas athletic wear jogger pants
Shoes:
  • keds
  • ugg boots in cognac
  • nike runners
  • birkenstock sandals
Tops:
  • oversize sweaters and hoodies. Especially university and college hoodies
  • tshirts and tops from a variety of stores like F21, HM etc
My 14 year old DD wears only roots bottoms and solid colored tshirts.

Daughter (9yrs old) has a school uniform, but on weekends prefers dresses and skirts, sometimes leggings with a top. She does wear jeans fairly often, and likes both skinny and bootcut styles. In the summer she wears skirts or shorts a lot. She thinks of herself as a fashionista and comes up with pretty cute and creative outfits.

Son (8yrs old) does not have a uniform, usually wears jeans or track pants, the latter being his favorite, with a tshirt. He's pretty basic.

DS (15) Jeans & graphic Ts (mostly with Darth Vader on them), Nike/Adidas shoes.

DD (13) Jeans & graphic Ts (TV/movie/anime fandoms), those crappy, polyester dresses and leggings from Hot Topic (again, favorite fandoms), Converse (low and hi tops) or boots/booties. She's a fangirl and totally dresses like it. It's both cute and horrifying to me.

My son's 19 and 15 like Old Navy Slim Chino style pants in colors from basic blacks and Navy to Burgundy. They have a few button ups and jackets in everything from Hoodies to baseball jackets. They were a lot of surf brand t-shirts, but also like pullover sweaters made by surf brands in striped versions as well as solids. Slim fits seem to be key. Old Navy is there go to other than surf brands.

My son is 13 and dresses as if a basketball game may break out at any time. School, home, whatever - basketball shorts, a tee shirt, and sneakers. It's a struggle to get him to dress properly for cold weather, then he wears sweatpants or track pants with his t shirts. He doesn't own jeans, khakis, cargo pants, or dress pants; no collared shirts or sweaters either. That's fine, though - our lifestyle does not require him to be dressed up ever so there's no point in having something "just in case" as he'd grow out of it before it got any use.

Ben (17) has been rocking joggers from Target since summer - he has 3 pairs. Old Navy/Gap slim jeans. Lots of hoodies, and tshirts from colleges (got into his first school today!) currently. Several pairs of shoes including 3 or 4 different athletic shoes (including the New Balance retros), hiking boots. And lots of workout gear. Likes fashionable jackets - bomber from Zara, etc.

Danny -20 - not as particular or fashion-conscious, but likes button down soft wash Gap shirts with sleeves rolled up (don't bother ironing), Gap / ON jeans. likes Clark chukka style boots. Trends toward grey t-shirts, which wash him out, I encourage all shades of blue with mixed results.

"Dressed up" for them both means khakis and a blue/white pinstriped shirt. personally I am tired of this "uniform". They don't like to wear the many V or crew neck lightweight cotton sweaters I've bought them.

Ben decided that black pants and a black shirt and a bow tie were appropriate for Homecoming - I thought he looked like a waiter! He slightly regretted his choice (at least!).

It's a process. Suggestions welcomed!

This was an interesting read! My daughters are no longer kids; they are 25 and 27.

The older one is a SAHM who dresses. Her style is rocker with a bit of boho. She likes skinny jeans and leggings with long tops/tunics, boots, motos, and huge bags.

The younger one is a program director at a camp so her work dress is very casual- shorts, tees and Chacos in the summer when camp is in session and jeans and knit tops or sweaters during the rest of the year. She also wears leggings as pants, for which her sister and I tease her! While she was in grad school, she had to wear more business attire and she looks great in pencil skirts as she is a curvy hourglass.

Ethan (almost 13) loves both skinny jeans/tee and basketball shorts/tech shirts. I can never figure out a pattern to when or why... He beats to his own drum. He will wear either combo to school on any given day. In his world, shoes are the all important style item. Vans, Converse, DC's. He treasures his shoes and lines them up neatly on shelves with charcoal bean bags inside to keep away the stink!

Today I picked out my clothes, put them on (including shoes), finished fixing my hair and got my coffee ready in a to go cup in the time it took him to pick out his clothes (not even put them on his body!) and he eventually emerged in a pair of jeans and tee shirt. I'm pretty sure the socks and underwear were what he was already wearing. How in the world could it have taken that long to put on TWO items?! It took another five minutes to put on the shoes. By the time he got in the car, I was exhuasted...

This is a fun post to read! I have a 6 year old son who likes to be comfortable, so track pants are preferred to jeans, which stupidly I insist on buying him. In winter he wears a long sleeve T-shirt and track pants and trainers (with a hoodie or puffer jacket) and in summer shorts and short sleeve T-shirt with sandals. He likes to look good, and will pick out his favourite clothes to wear, which often come from Zara who do great styling. At school, he wears a uniform, so that makes it easier for me.
