(tall) Boots-where to invest?

After Angie's post on Tuesday, I am rethinking a purchase.

I thought I was in need of some tall black boots (not over the knee).
I don't have any. I found a pair of Michael Kors at TJMaxx (not cheap but not department store expensive either). They are a good fit and my feet are hard to fit. They also have silver hardware which I love.

I do not own a pair of dress black booties. (I know, I know) See above. Most of booties for sale have AT LEAST 1.5 inch heels. I try to stay at 1 inch max. ( I do have a pair of casual black short boots)

So would you keep the bird in hand (the tall boots) or return them and continue the search for booties? Only one pair of boots are in the budget this month. I have to return these by Nov 2!

The zippers are stiff so I don't mind returning (maybe that is why they are at TJMaxx?)

I very much like these boots, QG. Stiff zippers may be helped with a little wax, if you decide to keep. My similar tall boots are rarely worn, but I have no plans to get rid of them.

Which style do you see wearing the most? If you can only fit one in the budget, I would put the $ toward the style that will get the most wear time.

I see these as very classic and since they fit well would be tempted to keep. But I agree that it depends on how much use you would get from them.

I like them too. My husband suggested soap on the zips. I don't think WAX would show, however

zoiechic & RobinF You are right about wear time. I dress for casual more than dress and these boots would get more wear than dressy booties.

During my years of largest wardrobe spending, I budgeted for one pair of boots per *year.* So in my view, you don't necessarily need to rush on either tall boots or booties. If you'd like tips on what features contribute to longevity, let me know but that's not what you seem to be asking.

The stiff zippers would give me pause; can you try the wax on them and wear them a while indoors before making your decision?

You can try running a pencil tip along the zipper. The material (graphite) is used to loosen doorknob tumblers, stuck nuts, etc.

Re boots...what function do you want them to perform? What's the weather in your neck of the woods? I have lots of tall boots with heels and tall dressy boots and fashion "winter" boots. What I really need was a dressy pair that I can wear in the snow and slush and will keep me dry and on my feet not in a snowbank turtling to get out.

I have 3 pairs of aquatalia to audition in their way to me.

I like bj1111's point re graphite. Someone else mentioned this to me this week!

I also think you should be entirely sure of the calf fit of the tall boots (in addition to the footbed). If it is too wide (gapes) or they are too tall or short, that would be another reason to let them go and choose booties.

These look like beautiful boots if the fit is correct for you. I wouldn't call them super dressy because they are not heeled and because of the different textures -- more smart casual in my view -- but that might not be an issue for you.
