A chance remark by nemosmom on Angie’s eyelet skirt thread got me thinking about pockets. A survey of my closet reveals that all but one pair of pants/shorts has (front) pockets, 3 out of 4 dresses have pockets, and all but one topper has ‘good’ pockets. Good pockets are ones that are sufficiently deep to hold items like keys, tissues, loose change, heart shaped stones, and other random objects - without the contents falling out. They must also be a comfortable height and angle for my hands.

No pockets, shallow pockets, or poorly placed pockets lower my ‘happiness’ with a garment - even though I can use a purse to hold my stuff, or pair toppers or pants that have good pockets with them. I’m even thinking of passing on items with pocket issues when I do the annual closet edit this fall - and adding ‘comfortable pockets’ to my shopping list of ‘do’s’ and ‘don’t s’ as another ‘note to self.’

What about you? How important are pockets to you? Would you buy a garment without functional pockets? Would you sew pockets shut to improve the appearance of a garment? Do you even think about pockets or pocket placement when trying on a garment?
