Do you have a favourite brand? Signiture coulour? Bonus points for application tips, ideas for thin lips, and 'me but better' colour recommendations.

The first thing that comes to mind is my drawer full of wrong colors. Or should I say: almost right. I am pale but the color of my lips is very colored. That makes buying very difficult. If I swipe across my pale hand it looks very different. I don't want to put lipstick on in stores, if you try one you never get it of really good. I have lipstick across all brands. My favorit color is brown red, or light red or taupish. Or Orange red.
Will follow this closely, I am not make up savvy.
Favorit brand Clinique.
For thin lips a pencil in your lipcolor I think.

I have signature requirements. Deep blue red color. Highly moisturizing. Stays put for a long time. I find this across multiple brands, including Clinque, Revlon, and Fresh.

My lips have a lot of pigment, so whatever I try ends up turning much darker when I wear it. Picking lip colors gets very tricky. I typically need to wait 10-15 minutes for a color to turn, so just trying it on my hand is not good enough. I also have thin lips. I hate using lip liner though. I tend to use colorful eyeliner, and sometimes shadow, so I don’t use a colorful lip, I try to find as natural a color as possible and for that I like gloss much better, although I have found a few colors I like. It’s interesting that the most sheer and light colors seem to look the best to my eye. I have found my color stays on best when I coat my lips with my foundation first, and then put the color over that. I have to make sure I reapply when needed though or my lips will look funny because the foundation I use has good staying power! My favorite sheer colors are very light sheer pinks, some look as light as bubble gum, some have more blue in them, but the key is they are sheer.

I love lipstick and often wear them bright, but I do wear lighter more natural colours from time to time. The most amazing formulation I have found is from Tom Ford - alas, these are also expensive a lovely everyday colour is 'Indian Rose'.

My favourite mid priced, my lips but better lipstick is by L'Oreal in colour 640 Erotique, in finds below.

I hope StyleFan responds to you because she wears great natural coloured lipsticks. The perfect shade can be hard to find.

If I want my lips to look fuller, I wear lipgloss. Another trick is to put a little gold eyeshadow over the top of your lipstick on the bottom lip to create the look of a fuller lip. Christian Dior do a gloss that is supposed to plump up your lips. It stings slightly when you first apply it, so I am not a fan.

I love Chantecaille because of its longevity and company ethics. They exclude several problematic ingredients from their products. I have one that offers a bit of a tint, and another in a cool red, and am pleased with both. I used to be a Bite Beauty fan for similar reasons, but their lip products seem to have an extremely short shelf life.

I adore Matte lipsticks. Nothing shiny or sticky. Lip gloss makes me shudder. I typically shop for makeup with my daughter--she is very very good at color--so I wear the colors she chooses for me.
Tarte Envy and Charlotte Tilbury Walk of Shame are current favorites. If my lips are dry I use a tinted Burts Bees lip balm.

Runcarla, I love lipstick! But had a tendency to have 26 tubes of basically the same color If natural is what you're after, I'd recommend Bobbi Brown - they are expensive but virtually no-fail if neutral is what you're after. My current favorites are pink-mauve, which is virtually my lip color but adds definition, Brownie Pink (a little warmer) and Rose Blossom (my version of a red lip - still natural but brighter).

Another purse staple for me is Revlon Honey, which is a lip crayon/balm, great for moisturizing and very natural. I'll slap this on even with no other makeup, just for a touch of moisture and definition.

My lips are thin too; I think just use a color that's not too dark and not too matte - a wee dab of gloss is nice too.

I used "me but better" colors for more than 10 years now (before it was rose pink in my youth and brownish reds in my 30's) and all worked well after findig the right shade. My current specs are 1.dark tortoise and 2.plain burgundy (with coral insides) and the well known "me but better" colors didn't suit me as well as before when wearing my Coco Song frames. These italian frames were black with some turquoise details on the front sides (which were real little blue flowers handcrafted in the plastic) and could not bare wearing them with stronger lips.

But wow, to my curent 2 pair of specs a strong red lippie is best! Such a strong dark red I never ever thought it will go good on my also thin lips...
So, I say...you will have to try them all- before settling...:-((.

I wear lipstick everyday, all day , and after what seems like a million years of trying every brand out there, I have 5 go-to brands and have stopped experimenting (it gets expensive!) I'm not sure my colouring is the same as yours , so colour choices probably aren't relevant but...

Bobbi Brown - Pale Pink
Bare Minerals - Tutu - ( a creamy pink )
MAC - there are 2-3 colours I wear regularly in their creamy formula
Urban Decay - not near me and can't remember colour name - slightly drier formula in pale pink
Chanel- Romance - a brighter pink , glossy formula

Bobbi Brown lip pencil in Bobbi (Style fan uses this too)

I use the lip pencil just on the cupid's bow and centre of my bottom lip to create a bit of definition and then lipstick right over it. Gloss is added sometimes, but not always. My lips are just ordinary - not thin, but not full either.

I really love Bare Minerals Gen Nudes. They come in a wide range of colors, there is no smell/taste, they are creamy and You get a generous sized tube for 20$ IMO.

I was gifted a Chanel lipstick and while the color is just a sheer pink, the packaging is so pretty and it just makes me happy!

If you a experimenting with colors, glosses, mattes, etc. NYX makes pretty good lip products in 5/6$ price range.

Fun to read what works for others. I love makeup!

I like lipcolor that is safe enough to eat (okay, well almost at least) so I typically stick with Aveda, Burt's Bees or similar products. I always go for a sheer color that lets my darkish lips show through. I don't like a "made up" look on my lips and I esp. don't like leaving lipstick marks on glasses and such (can't stand seeing women with lipstick on their teeth, UGH!) I don't typically wear it all day, more of a moisturizer type thing.

I wear a couple of MLBB lipsticks. I sometimes wear a lip pencil first. I have an average lower lip and a thin upper lip. I don't try to change the size of my lips. My experience has been disastrous when doing this.

I have eczema which flares up around my mouth. I have been trying to eliminate the nasty culprits (citrus fruits, tomatoes, bee products, etc.). I use CerVa Night Time Lotion to soothe my lips instead of lip balm. I find that is a nice base for lipstick. I also drink lots of water. Seems to help plump my lips.

I feather the lip pencil around my lips (not outside, just on the lip line). Then I put the lip pencil on my lips. After that, I put the lipstick on my lips. A tiny bit of gloss (MAC) in the center is nice but never lasts.

YSL (the one Angie recommended) has several neutral-mauve shades shades. Bite Beauty is nice but does not last. The ones with sunscreen (Sugar?) tastes bitter. My favorites are the YSL and some other shades from Bobbi Brown (pink rose, desert plum).

Whoa this post struck a cord,I ve spent my entire life looking for a lipstick like that.It s fascinating to read everyone’s replies but as colouring differs so much maybe it would be a good idea to pick someone who has the same colouring as you and ask them?I ve not been above asking people in the street what they are wearing if I see someone with my colouring wearing something I like.As for thin lips I think no matte lipsticks and err towards paler colours and more reflective formulations is the general advice,hope you find something!

It stays on for most of the day, but it doesn't dry out my lips. I can wear lipgloss on top of it, if necessary. It's a darker shade than my natural lip color. My lips are pale normally and I look dead without lipstick so I pretty much always wear something on them.

I loved Revlon Coloburst Lip Butter in Pink Truffle and was sad when the line was discontinued. But I did stumble upon Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Pink Truffle. It is sheerer than the lip butter, but still somewhat dewy and my lips stay moist. This is my daytime go to lipstick. For evening and dressier events I love my Clinique Butter Shine Lipstick in Apple Brandy - I can sheer this down or apply more for fuller coverage.

These lip colors definitely complement my face no matter what I am wearing.

Sometime last year, I decided I wanted a brown lipstick. I got a Bobbi Brown brown one which I really like.

My neutral/sheer is Jane Iredale 3-in-1 stick.

I want to try Boomstick.

I find colours I like and then want to replicate them when the tube is finished, and by then the colour is generally no longer made! This has been happening since I was 30 when my favourite cousin gave me a lovely sort of brick red for my birthday. I can't remember the brand but it might have been Maybelline, and since then their lippies have worked well, or good old Revlon. I always want a slightly more brick or orange red not blue red. Somehow they look more red on me. I guess because of my warmer tending skin?
Lately I've been taking the dregs of the very old tube and a lip brush with me shopping and then the new shade on my hand must look the same. This has worked, I found 2 new colours recently like this and yay could throw out 3 old tubes, 2 very similar oranges and one red.

I am a devotee of Nars. My shade is Gypsy, but then I am darker skinned. Their lipsticks and their lip crayons both have amazing texture and they last.

I stick to one lip colour at a time, and I’m currently on a Lancôme lip gloss which I like a lot. The applicator is great too.

If I have more than one lipstick ‘on the go’ I find it quite confusing!

I love the stuff. But I only use the 24 hour super longwear stuff, the one by revlon at the moment. It’s about $24-26aud. If I’m going to wear it I want it to be heavy and dramatic. Almost any colour can work if it goes with the outfit I think.

Oh I wish I could pop out to a Sephora after reading this thread. Bobbi Brown was my first makeup memory and after all these years I find that I still go back to her for well formulated colors.

Like BrieN, I like a matte lipstick, no gloss. I also like saturated color in a warm shade and find it very difficult to find warm colors. A coral or orange is a good bet. Most all lip products make the skin on my lips slough off, so I always use a layer of no-color Burts Bees or Aquaphor under the lipstick. My favorite brand right now is Revlon Creme ( deeply pigmented matte) in color 750, a bright coral, or color 525, a deep brownish red called Wine With Everything. For summer I would like to find a highly pigmented matte peach.

Ha Joy! I bought that Wine with Everything for my best friend for Christmas. She is a major wine drinker and literally does have wine with everything ( I have to watch myself when we go out!) and she also looks really good in red lipsticks. I liked the colour too and she was amused and happy with the gift

I wear lipstick almost always and I always have several in rotation. I usually use either a light kind of nude or red.

To me, the best lipstick when it comes to quality, texture and comfort is Sensai The Lipstick. They have very elegant, polished, classic colours. The texture is rich and creamy and lasts very long without drying out lips like many long lasting lipsticks might do. I have tried several colours in Sensai The Lipstick and my favourite is 05 Benikinu - a soft rosy colour (the picture shows another colour). However, there is no red in this collection which would work on me.

I have a couple of red lipsticks. One of my reds is Dior's Diorific in shade 013 Ange Bleu. Also very rich, soft velvety texture that lasts very long and does not dry out lips.

My newest is Chanel Rouge Allure Ink Matt - matte liquid lip colour no 152 CHOQUANT. Lovely, cold dark red. A statement colour on me.

I wear tinted lipbalm every day (Burt's Bees is my fav) but when I wear lipstick I really want a good pop of color. I always have a retro orangish red, a more blue-red, and a fuchsia in my makeup bag. I have been wanting to duplicate Rainbow from Blackish's purplish fuchsia but I am finding that it's a hard shade to find, or perhaps just hard to translate for a pale olive skinned gal. In any case, I have loved Sephora's shades for years and love how easy and fun it is to shop for lipstick there, but now that, ahem, I have some fine lines around my mouth that lipstick can feather into, I am thinking that maybe it's worth it to shell out for MAC, my favorite brand.

This is so interesting. I'm enjoying reading and checking out everyone's favorites. Runcarla - thank you for starting it. I'm actually not a fan of artifice. I love doing subtle "nude" make up on my face (I take it as a compliment when people think I don't wear make up!") I like the definition and polish but I don't like things to be noticed, esp lips. I'm usually just a Burt's Bees original peppermint. Also Smith's Rosebud salve. But sometimes you want a little something or for evening you need it. Needless to say, I'm in the MLBB category. I am a fan of Fresh Sugar Rose, Clinique Chubby sticks in strawberry with their raspberry gloss. I do like the Dior Addict Lip glow in the oringial barely there pink. I also like the Lilac since my lips have a blue undertone and is probably closest to my lip color and the berry for evening. If I'm pulling out all the stops for evening it's Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet La Caline 036 with their Levres Scintillantes Glossimer in 03 glaze again a very stuble pink/lilac hue. But it's always how subtle can I get and making sure I've matched into my cool undertones.

ETA: I love the Bobbi Brown aesthetic - but her line is the only one that breaks me out horrible. I treated myself to a little palate and 3 days later I have very painful pimples around my lips and facial breakouts. That makes me really sad because otherwise I would have dropped so much cash at that counter.
