Met a friend for lunch today that I haven’t seen for 2.5 years. And no, we did not collude on our outfits!
Previously I’ve worn a jean jacket with this dress, but today temps are soaring so I went with an oversized shirt to ensure arm coverage from the sun, and a hat because…why not?

Does the shirt work? And do you think a white band around the hat would be better? Thanks for your thoughts!

Wise of you to cover up today! I think the shirt works, but it’s a shame to cover the dress and loose the ‘column’ IYKWIM. I think the shirt worn open would be okay, or you could try making separate knots on the two front panels to give them some weight so they are less fly away.

The black band on the hat is classic, but you can experiment with ribbons or scarves. The band on my straw hat is navy with red and white polka dots, but I sometimes cover it with a skinny scarf if I want it to coordinate with a specific colour in my outfit. It takes some fiddling and pinning, but can be done!

Building on @runcarla's suggestion, could you perhaps knot the shirt *behind* you instead (to create a sort of 'faux bolero')? Not sure if that would look weird though, since I've never tried it myself...

I couldn’t believe my eyes Nikki when my friend arrived…we burst out laughing! Same but different! I agree that the black band on the hat seems to need some other black in my outfit.

I agree with Angie that the black band matches your hair, but I like Carla's idea about pinning a scarf over top if you want to change up the look. The shirt over the dress looks great. Summery and covered!

Trinny Woodall has a trick where she ties the shirt then kind of buttons the ends together. It ends up looking quite neat. It’s easier to do than to explain! (I’ve done it.) Anyhow, you might want to google it and give it a whirl

How cool to be on the same wavelength with your longtime friend like that! I like both your outfits. I like the way you have your shirt knotted, because it gives you shape/shows your waist. The top & bottom & hat band all pick up on each other nicely.

Who knew matchy matchy applied to friends as well! And it was sooo good to reconnect, lunch lasted 3 hours and we were still yakking up a storm. Bliss.

We did indeed Suz! We were used to each other in work/hospital attire so our outfit matching came as quite a surprise.

I think the shirt would be great open over a slim T shirt dress, and given I live on team matchy matchy, would wear the dress with espadrilles and a straw colored topper.
