Rute -- What a great hat; looks amazing on you!
Morethanbeige --
You lucky woman! [And congrats on the milestone.]
Unlike Rute I have more than one hat. In fact I have a loose 1 in/1 out policy these days....
I absolutely think one can have stylish "city" hats that give sun protection. I wear mine (almost) daily in the summer, and definitely when out and about for hours at a time.
In fact I just got back from a trip where my packing list looked like yours: hats and comfortable shoes (heels for me) + SPF 70 + BIG sunglasses -- and had no issues despite gorgeous blue skies and 6+ hours of walking/hiking most days.
A few quick things:
* I like to add a scarf around hats to add a bit of fun/color. Plus it's a 2-for-1 travel accessory.
* When packing, I generally take them in my carryon -- I just put one inside the other, turn the lot upside down, fill the hollow and pack softer stuff around them.
* I've had colored straw hats before and think they are awesome and "statements" -- so don't rule those out if you find ones that work with your travel wardrobe.
Now should be a great time of year to snap up hat bargains -- would love to know what you find. For moral support only, of course.

Photo 2: Black Betmar cotton/linen bucket hat -- this fabrication is great for travel (Betmar hats can be spendier, but this one has some awesome detailing you can't see in the photos)
Photo 3: Black San Diego Hat Company broad-brim polyester -- I use and abuse this for beach/exercise and it's totally crushable
Photos 4-5: White hats (broad-brimmed and smaller) on a beach vacation -- can't remember brands and gave smaller hat away
