Stylish skirt for sewing class? (New option)

I have stashed patterns for so long, I no longer know whether anything is stylish anymore. Adding to that is the fact the Vogue pattern I've linked to below is a "vintage" out of print pattern to begin with. (I think it's 70s or 80s?).

I was thinking about doing version B (knee length with cargo style pockets and military type buttons). The fabric swatch in photo 2 is a lightweight olive sheen woven.

I would be VERY grateful for any thoughts on this, and of course, if you sew and know of a cute but simple pattern, I'm all over it.

PS Do people consider this type of post "off topic" or is it better suited to "dressing"?

I think it would be great, and fit in well with the military trend! I think it could also look good with the other (non-cargo) pockets if you want something less hefty at the hips.

I don't sew anymore so I can't offer any input on newer patterns but I think that Vogue classic skirt is very cute. Love your idea of making it with a military vibe!

I have another option - a tulip skirt with wide waistband done up in a gorgeous soft wool plaid.

Picture #4 is my inspiration photo (skirt done in a plaid) and you can kind of see my fabric underneath. dark gray with camel and wine plaid.

I definitely like the tulip skirt...trickier to sew no doubt. Very chic. I just made a skirt myself this weekend. Just something summery and simple. Also made two fabric flower brooches and finished a quilt. Yeah, love the tulip. Fit will be key. Let us know how complex it is...and do show us the end result!

I like both options; the cargo pocket skirt will be easier both to construct and fit, so I guess it depends on your skill level and the goal of the class. If you're on the beginner end of the spectrum, then the first option might work better, but if you're looking for a challenge and working on fit, the I'd go for #2.

I know this kind of skirts are very in.. but I don't like them much.. I would prefer a tulip skirt like the ones mamapicklejuice suggested!

love the cargo pocket skirt. if you make it to just below the knee, you'll be on trend for longer hemlines AND military. plus you'll have pockets for your lipgloss and keys.

I'm torn - I mean I want to sew all three! I need to make a muslin tomorrow - should be pretty fast. Will get a better sense then.

Oh, sew the tulip skirt in a sturdy black fabric and you will have the most amazing, versatile skirt for years to come. It reminds me of my new black pencil skirt and I love it to death!
