Styling advice for bright blue boots

Hello, it’s me the forum hog again. My last big 2023 goals post has got me thinking… at the moment I have some BEAUTIFUL blue doc martens, I really love them. But you won’t be surprised to read that they are tricky to style. I have included pics of how I wear them; slim black jeans (slightly looser as I size up, compared to how tight they look in the stock photo), with a chunky sky blue knit jumper (prettier in real life and a bit newer condition than the one pictured). I literally only wear them in this one outfit. Otherwise I don’t wear them.
I wonder if anyone has any clever suggestions on how else to wear them? Thank you for any ideas, it’s always appreciated :). I promise no more posts from me today….. xx

Love your posts! I missed you while you were gone. I love seeing what you come up with. I am on holiday in a resort town and today have had the most relaxed day ever.
I have that matchy- matchy gene that would make me want to wear them with the blue jumper too.
A multi coloured top or jumper that still has some of that blue or a similar blue? Other forum members will say mix other colours but I can’t honestly suggest that since I probably wouldn’t do it…

Love the colour of your boots and your jumper.

For cohesiveness and balance in an outfit with the blue boots, just wear a blue item (or a patterned item containing blue) in your portrait area. For instance, a scarf, necklace, earrings, brooch, shirt, tee, jacket, eyewear, hat or umbrella. The blue doesn't necessarily have to be as bright as your boots.

Would it help to think of them as a “denim” neutral color?

I’ve actually been wanting shoes in this color for a while. Fabulous with any neutrals, honestly. Dark jeans or anything black or navy, of course. But equally good with gray, brown or camel.

Lovely color. How about a white/ cream sweater and light wash jeans to create a sort of ombre effect.

UmmLila: excellent suggestion. I do have some cream jackets/cardis. I could just wear one of those with blue jeans and the boots? Keep it simple.

Like Jenni NZ, I have a hardwired matchy matchy gene, so my go to would also be to wear these boots with that sweater. But, my other go to would be a column of color outfit with the boots as the statement piece. So navy sweater and a dark wash jean and these boots as a pop. Or black top with the jeans above etc…my other “trick” is to find a belt in the same color as my shoes, that also makes me feel like I’m tying my outfit together (but I know that not everyone likes to wear a belt).

And please share what you come up with.

I have mules in a similar colour and struggled as well. I do have a white bag which a similar blue in it and when I wear them together the shoes suddenly work with almost any outfit. Repeating the colour some where else is definitely the way to go, even with just one item. A bag, a scarf, a chunky bangle, earrings, etc. Yes to with dresses and skirts too. Maybe even easier with a solid colour dress and the boot will be an unexpected contrast. Your blue lippie matches them too

I like Umm Lila's suggestion- and yay to duplicating the color with a bag or accessory. Even a print with the same color would work.
Do you have a denim jacket or coat in that color?
It would also go well with grey pants if you have.

I like Lisa's ombre-effect suggestion. And for an opposite approach, I might try a TIBI inspired look of slouchy joggers or wide leg pants with a side stripe (Saint & Sofia has a cool pair ) and a bright purple, green or red sweater.

White or cream bottoms with whatever topper you want. I can see them with dresses/ skirts too.

Love your blue sweater combo, also like the idea suggested already of white denim bottoms , or maybe a denim shirt instead of your sweater. Perhaps a denim skirt with black tights or boyfriend jeans cuffed and coordinating striped socks showing. I think those boots are a lot of fun.

I can see these with a black and white outfit, whether simple (white blouse/black pants) or something with graphic patterns (stripes? gingham?). Agreed with The Cat that you can then optionally pull in the blue with the smallest touch, and it doesn't have to be an exact match - if you don't have anything, perhaps see if you can find some chunky resin earrings locally or on etsy? I personally often prefer a tonal complement to perfectly matching.

I adore that color! It’s not always easy to find. I’d basically pair them with any mostly-neutrals outfit. Then add maybe a scarf or piece of jewelry that includes some blue just to tie the color in visually.

I particularly like that shade of blue with burgundy. I can’t recall seeing you wear burgundy but just thought I’d mention it in case it gets the creative juices flowing. It would also look really good with shades of rust, cinnamon, toffee, etc.

Those boots are tremendous! Myself, I would bring out camel or cinnamon or other shades of brown to wear with them. I love blue and brown together, especially a bright blue like turquoise or aqua.

I would treat those boots as a stand-alone, interesting item and wear them with black jeans and a grey shirt or grey jeans and a black shirt. Grey or black bag. However, I am not fashion forward or an expert and my clothes are pretty boring.
Interested to see what the stylish ones say, though.

I’d probably wear them with a printed maxi dress or skirt that had the blue as one of its colors. Or you could wear them with a shorter skirt and some textured tights that had that shade of blue in them. You could even change up the color of the laces if you wanted to tie that color into the outfit.

I love them! And love the sweater, too. I was nodding along with all these suggestions and wanted to add: Red! I'd definitely wear them with reds, either burgundy, as Janet suggests, or really any red. Plus white and/or navy/ black.

I'd also mix them with patterned items including bright blue up top, as others have said -- a top, a scarf, earrings, a bag, a belt -- you name it.

Gorgeous boots! I usually do earrings in some blue color - doesn't matter which blue - pale blue, mid blue, mix of shades. The other option - scarfs with some print and some blue/navy/white in it. I'll probably try bright blue eye shadow and wear pretty much anything with those boots ( flow-y skirts, straight jeans, knit dresses and graphic tees as my fav..).

Everyone else has offered great suggestions, so I don't have much to add. I would wear them with all sorts of blue denim and I think they would work great with neutrals (grays, navy, browns and camels and beiges, cream/ivory) and with other, similar bright colors like yellow, red, pink, peach, greens. In short, I would wear them with lots of stuff!

You have gotten great suggestions here! To those I would add (sort of -- I think this has been hinted at above but more implicitly than explicitly) try them with jeans and a solid, bright colored top or sweater to create a color block effect

I would wear them with everything! I resist the idea of having to match, or even having another bit of blue on you somewhere to go with them. Just wear them like you'd wear a black or brown shoe...?

Sooo many creative ideas jessikams, Janet, Suz, Jenni, violetmyra, Judy, SarahD8, jonesy, slim cat, xtabay, Catherine, Roberta, Jules, Dee, indigoprint, LJP, Star, Suntiger: thank you all. I see SO many possibilities now, whereas before I was completely stuck in a rut. Like… completely. So I threw together some finds from my
wardrobe, these are not super adventurous, some of your suggestions are way more exciting and I will hopefully test run some of them soon. For now, here’s the finds,
using the shoe colour as a sort of stand in for light denim blue as a few people suggested, and mixing it with some
different neutrals.

What a lovely color! I think they’d also look fantastic with light grey plaid trousers or dark indigo jeans. And a top in other colors could go well - green, pink, many options as long as there’s some harmony.
